Top Corner:
With the commencement of the works in the Abbey Park people are asked to take care and try and cooperate in terms of parking. It was disappointing that on last Sunday some people were not so cooperative with the Boyle Band stewards. There is also the issue and how it impinges on Boyle Abbey. If visitors cannot park then they can hardly be expected to stop. They might have travelled to see the Abbey. Visitors always say that the one great asset in an Irish holiday is the people so let us in Boyle reinforce that positive.

The co-operation of all will be appreciated and we look forward to its completion by March of next year.

Intermediate’s Disappointing Defeat:
The McGovern Directional Drilling team made a very disappointing start to their championship campaign with a one goal loss to St Barry's in Tarmonbarry on Sunday. This makes their next outing against Fuerty in Boyle on 8th/9th August a must-win encounter if they are to progress in the championship.(I really expected Boyle to win this game and when I got notice, a few times during the progress of the game, of the score positions I was really disappointed. By all accounts the team, with a few honourable exceptions, played poorly but since I was not there I cannot comment. If I was there I would be a sad man so perhaps it was just as well especially adding this to the Castlebar debacle T.C.).

Who’s for the last of the Choc Ices?
The last few tickets for the Roscommon County Board Draw can be obtained from any of the Club officers. The Draw takes place next week.

Important Club Meeting:
An important open meeting for club members will be held in the Royal Hotel on Wednesday 8th July.

Congratulations and Celebrations:
Congratulations are extended to Stephen and Veronica Tonra on the birth of their daughter.

Congrats to County Minors:
Congrats to the County Minors and their management team including Gary Wynne, Joe Sweeney and company on reaching Connacht Final. However my Leitrim friends tell me that GAA football is at low ebb in Leitrim at the present time.

Sympathy:
The sympathy of the entire Boyle Club and especially those members who know the family is extended to the Kelly Family, Ballyleague on the tragic death of Michael on Monday/Tuesday June 22/23rd. Michael was a great St. Faile’s stalwart and Roscommon supporter and his will be a great loss to his family, club, friends and acquaintances.

Monday Evening, June 15th:
Girls with Roscommon U 14 Victory:
Congratulations to the Girls U14 County Roscommon team and in particular
Boyle girls Nicole Kerins and Natasha Regan on reaching the U14 All-Ireland
'B' Final with a great win over Antrim in Monaghan yesterday. Natasha is out

and a scored a great goal. Good luck to this team who meet Clare in the
All Ireland U14 'B' final on Sunday June 28th, venue to be decided.
T.C. Scroll down to pic. and see if you know who the person second from right front is.

Juniors Good Win:
The Feelystone Junior team had a good win over a strong Kilmore outfit in the Division 4 League in Kilmore on Friday evening last. Conditions were pretty bad but the Boyle side were industrious and committed and worthy winners. Donal Kelly gave Boyle an early advantage with three good points. David Callaghan eventually finished the ball to the net in spite of the efforts of Kilmore’s unorthodox goalie. Callaghan though he missed a couple added a couple of pointed frees to leave the half-time score; Boyle 1.7 Kilmore 0.3. Kilmore were a changed side in the second half and goals in the second and twelfth minutes had Boyle in trouble. however Boyle introduced a Kyle McLoughlin and Cian Smith and this steadied the ship. A highlight of the game was the fine goal from the industrious Peter Lavin, from an acute angle which Peter was pleased with as were we all. The final score was: Boyle 2.10 Kilmore 2.6. The Boyle team was: C. Beirne, C. Horan, M. McGovern, M. O’Donnell, A. Finn, J. Lyons, Ml. P. Gilmartin, N. McKenna, P. Lavin, C. Brennan, D. O’Connor, S. Spellman, B. McQuaid, D. Callaghan, D. Kelly with K. McLoughlin and Cian Smith. Best for Boyle were McGovern, Finn (despite a few wayward line kicks), Mckenna in the first half, O’Connor and Kelly. It is a pretty good side and obviously the wealth of experience and commitment in the management team of David O’Connor, Dessie, Bernard Shannon and Paul Beirne will get the best out of them.

Roscommon v Mayo Tickets:
Tickets for the Roscommon versus May Connacht Championship semi-final will be sold in the Abbey Park on this Tuesday evening, the 16th, from 8pm to 9pm. They will be sold on a first come first served basis.

U 12 Div. 4:
On the playing fields, the Under 12 Division 4 team had a good league win over Padraig Pearses. Their next outing is a trip to Ballinameen to play the home side on Monday June 15th next.

U 12 Div. 1:
The U12 Division 1 team lost by one point to Clann na Gael on Sunday last. They will entertain Padraig Pearses in the Abbey Park on Sunday next in their last league outing of the season.

U 14s’:
The U14s suffered defeat to Strokestown in Strokestown on Thursday evening last. Despite this defeat, this team is through to the semi- finals. Thanks are extended to the Strokestown physio for her assistance with a Boyle injury during the game.

Lotto:
There was no jackpot winner at the most recent Boyle GAA Club Lotto draw which was held in An Crannóg. The €20 winners were Shane Caslin, Vincent McDonagh, John Joe Nerney, Tommy and Monica King, Rory Nevin, John Carty, Aisling Goldrick, Jordan Maye, Gary Healy and Seamus Cooke. Best Wishes:
Best wishes are extended to the Roscommon panel and management and especially all the Boyle connections for Saturday evening in Castebar.

Sunday, June 14, 2009

The above is a poor pic. of a Boyle Minor team from circa. 1963. We know all but one of the people in the pic. so I am asking if anyone can look carefully at the pic. (you may need a magnifying glass!) and see if they can name the person second from the right front. The rest is as follows: Back: John Morris, Leo King, Paddy McKeon, Pat Clarke, John Cryan, John Nicholson, Frank Tuite (thanks for spelling correction) and in clothes John MacPearson.
Front: Micheal Toolan, Vincent Regan, Gerry McGlynn, Sean Kenny, Pat Nicholson, Danny Boy Regan, ????????, Seamus Downes. So Paddy & Austin and Co. over to you!
Top Corner;
Two Non GAAh Requests:
1. I had a C.D. which I was fond of and it has disappeared. Maybe it is just submerged but it hasn't surfaced for a quite a while. It was called 'Anthems of the World Vol. 1' (not 2). It may have come with the Indo. once. It includes rugby anthems plus. If anyone has a copy I'd appreciate same.

2. Does anyone have any guidance on the capacity of transferring audio tapes to C.D.s' ?

Now back on line;

Ladies;
Boyle Junior Ladies played Shannon Gaels on Friday evening last in monsoon-
like conditions. This was an excellent, highly competitive, keenly contested
game which Boyle Ladies won by 3 points. This team next meet Ballinameen in
a few weeks time.

U 12 'Lions':
The U12 Girls "Lions" team travelled to Ballyleague on Saturday last for their
Division 1A final against Clann na Gael. They were not successful. Congratulation to Clann na Gael who won this final. There is no training for this team this week and
training resumes on Monday 22 June 6-7pm.

'Cub's:
The U12 Girls "Cubs" have resumed training this week and continue training on
Mondays only from 6-7pm.

U 14s':

commencing in early August. Full attendance is expected at training by all
panel members.

Wed. June 10th. 9.00 a.m.
Team Photographs:
People over teams shlould try and get one team picture, especially if that team is in a final, each year. The picture should be printed as a hard copy. The present reality with the great digetal camera is that there are plenty of pics. being taken but they are not being printed, are possibly on disc collections, but their traceability into the future will be much more difficult than with the hard copies.
Indeed I would suggest to the Ladies Club that they get someone who is interested as a 'recorder' (not Secretary) for their Club in terms of pics./match results/ games played/and scrapbook accounts of games, socials etc. It would be nice to have all these together when they write a booklet in at some future time etc.

La na gClub pics....where are you?

Top Corner:
Convent N.S. in GAA Final:
Breaking News (Tues. 6.30) Scoil na nAingel Naofa, Boyle versus Cornafulla N.S. at Kilbride on tomorrow, Wednesday the 10th at 7 p.m. This is a real first for the school so hopefully there will be plenty of support for coach Seamus Gallagher and his side. I believe that General Dermot Earley will be presenting the medals afterwards.
Junior Fixture:
The Division 4 North league game, between Boyle and Kilmore, has been re-fixed for Kilmore on this Friday evening June 12th at 8pm (not Sat.).

Top Corner;

Quiz;
Though not a GAAh thing there is a Quiz in The Moving Stairs on Thursday night next the 11th in aid of the Show revival and a bit of fun. So maybe there will be some readers here who would be interested in participating. If you haven’t got a team come in anyway and we’ll line you up with a team etcetera. That last word is the basis of a question etc.!

County Board Draw Tickets:
The Club is still a few tickets short of their quota so if anyone is interested they can contact me on 086 816 33 99 and I’ll do the necessary. Booking fees waived.

Super Sunday at the Abbey Park:
The Abbey Park, as a facility, was certainly in demand on Sunday with U 12 boys, Intermediates and U 12 girls i.e. three games and the Convent N.S. on Monday morning.

Lotto Winners:
The following were the €20 winners of the Boyle GAA Club Lotto draw which was held in An Craoibhín on 23rd May John and Olivia Kelly,John Higgins, Joe O'Donnell, Tom and Kathleen Kiernan, Sean Purcell, Martina McQuaid, Fintan and Declan McGovern, Logan Prior, Lucia Cretaro and Olive Roe. There was no jackpot winner.

U 12s’:
The U12 Division 1 team had a convincing win over St Bridget’s in Boyle on Sunday last. The score ended on Boyle 0.17 points St. Bridget’s 0. 12. The U12 Division 4 team also had a good win over St Barrys in Tarmonbarry on Wednesday last. It is really great to see a second team full stop but even more so when that side can be competitive in their grade.

U 14s:
The U14s’ also had a convincing win over St Bridget’s in Kiltoom. Apparently there was a blitz of Boyle goals in this game and in a most unusual but generous twist the Boyle team were applauded off the field by the St. Bridget’s supporters in attendance in recognition of the quality of their play. However their next outing will be a real litmus test when they meet ongoing rivals Strokestown, in Boyle, at 7pm on Thursday evening.

Intermediate Team Two Good Wins:
The McGovern Directional Drilling team copperfastened their qualification for the O'Gara Cup play-offs following two fine wins during the week. They defeated Ballinameen in Ballinameen on Wednesday evening last and they overcame St Michael’s in the Abbey Park on Sunday. Against St. Michael’s the team gave another good performance and again the only flaw was that they should have scored a considerable amount more. The defence was again impressive with Ml. Paul coming in to effect at wing back. Kyle did pretty well at midfield while the forwards with a bit more sharpness and killer instinct can provide more scores. At half-time the score was: Boyle 2.6 St. Michael’s 0.3 the goals coming from Rory O’Donohoe, one a penalty. Though well on top in the second half Boyle only added 1 goal and four points. There was a fifteen minute period from the 8th to the 22nd minute of the half without a Boyle score though there were chances. Darren O’Connor scored a cracking goal towards the end but was it disallowed? The final score was: Boyle 3.10 St. Michael’s 0.8. When are the O’Gara Cup play-offs? The next game is in the Championship versus St. Barry’s on the week-end of the 27/28th.
The team was: T. McGarty, B. Supple, K. Supple, C. Beirne, Ml.P. Gilmartin, D.Casey, S. Purcell, S. Tonra, K. McLoughlin, M.O’Connor, D. Keenehan, A. O’Connor, C. Smith, R.O’Donohoe, L.Conboy with J. Lyons, D.O’Connor, D. Callaghan, P.Simon, M.McGovern also J. Conroy, C. Boylan, L.Conroy injured.

Ticket Arrangements for Roscommon v Mayo:
The same format will be used for supply of tickets for the forthcoming Roscommon versus Mayo Connacht Senior Football Championship Semi-Final as was used for the recent Leitrim game.Tickets will be sold on a first come first served basis in the Abbey Park on Tuesday June 16th between 8pm and 9pm.Those from the Boyle Club area who wish to reserve tickets in advance may do so by contacting Club Secretary, Kathleen Hanmore.

Ladies Notes:
Juniors:
Boyle Junior Ladies took part in the Dermot McDermott and Joe Ward Memorial
Tournament in Carrick last weekend, a good weekend was had by all the participants.

U 12 ‘Lions’:
Boyle U12 "Lions" played St Ciaran's, from the Fuerty/Creggs area, in Boyle last Sunday in an exciting,
Division 1A, Semi-Final. Boyle were somewhat lucky to win by a single point with a well taken goal in the dying seconds of the game. The score was Boyle 2.6 St. Ciaran’s 3.1. They now meet Clann na Gael in the Division 1A Final in a venue yet to be decided. Please come and
support this team in the final.

U 12 ‘Cubs’:
Boyle U12 "Cubs" played Padraig Pearses ‘Cubs’ in Oran last Sunday in the
Division 4B Final. Congratulations to Padraig Pearses who won this game.
This team have a break from training this week, and will resume training on
Monday June 15th and on Mondays only until the end of the summer.

Convent National School;
The convent National School had a good win over The Convent of Mercy N.S. Roscommon at the Abbey Park on Monday in the County Semi-Final of the girls’ county national schools competition. They now await their final opponents. This would be a very good series for the school to win so we look forward to the final.

Thanks:
The Club thanks Sean Purcell who presented medals to the girls last Sunday evening
after their end of Championship get together.
That's it.
Fiona

Roscommon versus Mayo;
The above game will take place in Castlebar on Saturday the 20th at 5 p.m.

Boyle 0.14 Balinameen 1.5
Boyle had a good win over Ballinameen on Wednesday at Ballinameen. While it was a convincing win it could have been even more comfortable with a couple of goal chances just missed, in the first half particularly. Again the ball forward was slow with over-elaboration in the passing department. It is difficult for forwards, who make their runs and the ball is still not let in. Then when the forward makes that run early, by the end of it he is too close to the player in possesion and is redundant. In that first half also there were big unattended areas in the final fifth of the field. Too many voices cause cofusion also. That said 9and I always hope that it does not offend people) there were some good scores and displays. I wonder would it be considered for Damien Keenehan to go to midfield with Stephen and withAaron, who can get some very good scores, going to wing-forward and Mark to centre. The reality is that it is not going to be easy to pick the championship team and keep everybody happy!

The play:
Cian Smith got Boyle off to a good start with a point in the opening minute. Indeed Cian is a very effective scorer but needs the ball put close to him from outside. Mark O'Connor added another on 4 minutes and there then was a gap until the third score a Cian free on fifteen minutes. Boyle had conceeded two points from frees to Gary Hanly. There were a number of pretty wild shots for points at this stage and as I used to advise years ago 'give it to the shooters'. Cian had a goal chance on 22 minutes as Boyle finished strong with good points by Lochlainn and a good improvisation by Stephen Tonra. The half time score; Boyle 0.7 Ballinameen 0.3.
Boyle's scoring was more even in the second half the points coming in 1, 6, 10, 12, 14, 21 and 24 minutes from five different players. Indeed Mark o'Connor was through for a sure goal but was fouled in the first minute of the half.
Oddly Boyle took the foot off the pedal in the last five/six minutes and Ballinameen forced a goal which gave the scoreboard a more reasonable look from their perspective. The reality seems to be, in viewing clubs around that demography (population trends) seems to be biting into rural clubs, or perhaps the great under-age work of Boyle Club is moving them forward. Whether the current climate will bite Boyle as well in that respect but it is a while since there was this gap between Boyle and Ballinameen.
Next Sunday's game, at 2.30 in Boyle, against St. Michael's, who seem better equiped in numbers terms, will tell us more.
Boyle are now through to the play-offs of the O'Gara Cup with Roscommon Gaels, St. Dominick's and X.
Boyle: T.McGarty, B. Supple. K. Supple (who had a fine game), C. Beirne, T. Egan, S. Purcell, c. Boylan, S.Tonra (0.1), A. O'Connor, M.O'Connor (0.2), D. Keenehan (0. 2), D. Casey, C. Smith (0. 5; 3 frees), L. Conroy, D. O'Connor with L. Conboy (0.2), K. McLoughlin (0.1), A. Finn. I may have missed another substitution. Overall, while there were ups and downs, it has been a pretty good O'Gara Cup campaign to date with a side which seems to have pretty good resources. So well done to all involved!

Thursday, June 4, 2009

Top Corner:
Boyle play their last game in the O'Gara Cup versus St. Michael's at Boyle at 2.3o p.m.
The U 12 'Lions' girls' team play St. Ciaran's in the Div. 1. Semi-Final in Boyle at 6.30 on Sunday.
Also, regretably a clash, the U 12 'Cubs' play Pearses in the Div. 4B Final at Oran at 5p.m the same evening. Please suport above games.

Intermediates;
The men's Intermediate team had a good win over Ballinameen last evening (Wednesday), at Ballinameen, on the score of: Boyle 0.14 Ballinameen 1.5 with their goal coming in the final minutes. I'll have a few notes on the game posted later.
This should almost certainly put them in the O'Gara Cup play-offs. The first game in the Championship takes place versus St. Barry's, away, on Saturday/Sunday 27th/28th.

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

Top Corner:
Boyle Intermediate team play Ballinameen on this Wednesday June 3rd in Ballinameen at 8.15. Please support.

Monday, June 1, 2009

Top Corner:
Roscommon had a good win over what I felt was a very limited Leitrim side in the sunshine of Carrick on Shannon on Sunday last. It was a game we had to win and we now meet Mayo on Saturday June 20th at 7pm I think.
While not germane to here there is a quiz in The Moving Stairs on Thursday June 11th (not June 4th as may be advertised in some places) at 9.34. It is in aid of the summer show revival. So I expect the GAA brains thrust to be out in force!
The account of the La na gClub match has been mentioned to me a few times recently, a couple of times on the basis that it could not be seen on this blog (the scroll down option is trying on the wrists!) so I’ve brought it forward for the benefit of x and y just below.

Successful Week:
It has been a very successful week on the playing fields for Boyle Club with winning performances in all games played in the various competitions.

U 14s’:
The U 14s’ had a well merited win over St Dominick’s in Knockcroghery on Thursday evening. They will travel south again, on this Thursday, to take on St Brigid’s in Kiltoom at 7pm.

Juniors Win:
The Feelystone junior team had a good win over Kilglass Gaels in Kilglass on Saturday evening last.

Intermediates:
The McGovern Directional Drilling team is scheduled to play a crucial O'Gara Cup game against St Michael’s on Saturday next at 8pm-see fixtures for confirmation.

Roscommon Win:
Well done to the Roscommon teams and their managements on their victories in Carrick-on-Shannon on Sunday last. Our U 12 and U14 panels enjoyed the occasion in Carrick on Shannon and both panels are to be complimented on their exemplary behaviour.

Flags Still Missing:
The missing flags have not been returned to the Abbey Park… yet. It is hard to imagine that someone does not know where these minor items are. This is a kind of test in looking out for our stock so the wanted posters are still up!

Dermot McDermott Memorial Cup, which they won last year, next weekend of June 6th. The weekend is
