Mon. 12.40 am
Quiz:
The Club' social event of the Christmas will take place on Wednesday 29th, in the Moving Stairs at 9.16. Quizmaster is T. C. If anyone has some clip boards they could bring them as they might be needed. If anyone has a C.D. of Christmas classics early Wed. am I could use it also for background and perhaps for questions. T.C.
The Club Lotto draw was deferred from last week until Monday night as a mark of respect to Mary Kate Hanmore, Knockavroe and Mrs Eileen Goldrick Ross, Lisserlough, both of whom passed away last week. Both ladies had strong family connections with the Club.
The Club's AGM will be held on Sunday 16th January. The Minor Club presentation night will be held on Friday 7th January in St Joseph's Hall. .
Go raibh maith agaibh,
If we are not back posting before the week end we wish all readers a Happy New Year (and prosperous!) 2011 especially those in Oz and other distant places.

Mon. 3pm.
As a result of something I said the following arrived in today's post re. Street Leagues. I only know some of those listed! I think there are a lot of aspirational names down. Never mind the quality feel the width. There are a couple of harmless rules such as: ball can be picked directly from ground as in girls football/ mark from kick out/Unltd. subs (!)/ Min. 13 in a team max = 15! / 25 mins a half. The only thing I advise, having been through a few old Street Leagues in the last century, is try and afford a 'trip to Sligo' or causing same! T.C.
It is great to see Seamie Gallagher touching down, got the last plane from London and had the last bus going west waiting for him at Dublin airport. Who says we don't provide?

Tony,
My apologies. I should have sent this to you sooner. Just saw your post on real boyle.
These are the teams and fixtures for the street league. I have also attached a spreadsheet (Beyond me converting to here, sorry!).
We are hoping to appoint “celebrity” managers for each team – would yourself (sorry, retired T.C.) and Kit be interested in this prestigious role for the “Forest View” team?

Sun. 12 midnight:
The Club Lotto draw which was scheduled for Saturday night fell victim to the inclement weather. It has been rescheduled for this Thursday night in An Craoibhin. So if you are on a premises when the sellers come in, help them out by making a fuss and asking for an envelope in a way that you could be heard!! Priming it's called!
Plans are being finalised for the Club's Christmas function -the annual quiz in the Moving Stairs on Wednesday night 29th December starting at 9.16 pm. This will be a great opportunity to get together for what will hopefully be a fun night. There will be a Club meeting on Tuesday night at 8.30 in Wynne’s Bar to make arrangements for the Quiz night where we could (hopefully) need 4 correctors, 2 scoreboard personnel, 4 distributing sheets etc, 1 floor manager plus A.N.Other. That =?
A quiz question = ‘Who played the lead in the film Lassie?
The Club AGM will be held in the Clubroom on Sunday the 16th of January. Nomination and motion forms have been circulated.
We are delighted to announce that our new clubrooms have been shortlisted for the Local Authority Members' Association (LAMA!) annual awards. The gala ceremony will take place in Dublin on the 22nd January with Miriam O’Callaghan as M.C. when the final results will be announced. Anyone who is interested in attending should contact the Secretary.
The annual St Stephen's Day Street League games are scheduled for the Abbey Park on Sunday next with games at 11.30am and 12.30pm. This is for adult players-U21s, juniors and seniors. The event is subject to a 7am pitch inspection by our pitch co-ordinators! I got very little on this in terms of team lists, captains strategy and that bumph! Ciest la vie.
The Club extends Season’s Greetings to our many players, mentors, supporters, our loyal sponsors, Club Lotto ticket purchasers and direct debit holders, lotto sellers and the publicans who host our fortnightly draw- which is the lifeblood of the club- and the local media (Ros Herald and People and the Ros. Champion and Realboyle) for their excellent coverage. Good wishes are also extended to our Club players who unfortunately (is that valid?) are abroad at present, many of whom have achieved football success this year, such as Damien Keenehan and Seamus Gallagher who won titles in Australia with Wolfe Tones in Melbourne and Roch Hanmore who is starring in both Aussie Rules and Gaelic football and Killian (with a K) Egan who is playing in Perth! (I didn’t know that). These stars will be supplemented by another X Factor star now that Karl Keenan has arrived. Success was also achieved by former Boyle Ladies football player, Aisling Dolan who won an All-Britain Championship medal with Oisin’s Club of Manchester. If I was in Melbourne I’d be in the ‘G’ on St. Stephen’s Day for the fourth test.
Regards to Paddy Conlon in Wolkingham, Austin Beisty in New York, Damien Dooley wherever, Kieran Keenehan in W.A. Tony Garvin, Ciaran Conlon, Timmy O'Dowd, Rory and Sinead on tour and that veteran of GAA teams A.N.Other. The Wiliam Hill Sport’s Book of the Year is; ‘The Club’ (Pub. By Penguin Ireland) by Christy O’Connor (not the golfer now). It is about a year in the life of St. Joseph’s Doora-Barefield club in Ennis with a resonance for all clubs. It is getting top reviews.
R.T.E. Sports Awards of 2010 is on Wednesday night at 9.35.
Since this is most likely to be the last post before Christmas, on behalf of the P.R. Dept. Martin and I extend Seasons’ Greetings to all who tune in here. We hope you all have a good, happy and safe (especially in Bondi Junction and on Bondi Beach) Christmas and that 2011 will be a bit less traumatic than the past year.

G.A.A.Data Base Unauthorised Access:
Apparently the data base of GAA membership at national level has been compromised to some degree having been accessed in an unauthorised way. The GAA has set up a dedicated information line at 1890 987 807 for any members concerned by the data breach. So if there are unsolicited calls beware. Of course this follows in every situation. There have been assurances that there is no evidence of misuse of the information and an individual has been brought in for questioning on the matter. However it is certainly not what the GAA wants to hear within such a short time of the launch of the national registration scheme.
Lotto: The following were the €20 euro winners at the most recent Club Lotto draw
which was held in the Moving Stairs on Saturday night last; Gerry
Enright, Seamus Cooney, Brid and Conor McGowan, Vincent Flanagan,
Perpetua McGee, John Finn, Michael O'Dowd, Gerry Mattimoe, Darragh
Loftus and Francis King. The house prize was won by Sean Hogan. This
Week's draw will be held in An Craoibhin on Saturday night next with Mary
Clifford's team in charge. The jackpot will be €2,300 euro.

Our instrumental music troupe of ConorTivnan and Caoimhe and Jack Morris
performed admirably in the Scor na nOg County Finals in Athlone on
Sunday but lost out to an excellent Castlerea group. All three will gain
from the experience and hopefully they will be back again next year.

The County Board AGM will be held on Saturday next and our Club Presdent
John Joe Nerney will step down as County Board President, having served
the stipulated two year term with dignity and destinction. John Joe has
served the GAA as All-Ireland winning player, trainer, adviser and
administrator since the nineteen thirties and long may he continue.
The club's annual quiz on the 29th Dec. looks like it will be a significant club social night of the Christmas season.
Congrats to our Club members who proved that their
fancy footwork on theplaying fields converts to the stage as shown in
the Celebrity Jigs and Reels last weekend. Aaron O'Connor, with Cait
Skeffington took the title while Martin Purcell and Gerry Cregg were
among the dancers while Junior Smith was equally adept as MC for the
night.
I hope the eagle (Karl Keenan) has landed and when you get settled Karl give us the lowdown on down under. T.

Tues.1am ntdwgaa: I'd just like to alert people to a T.V. programme on R.T.E. 1 at 10.40pm Tues. The title of the prog. is 'Every Heart Beats True:The Jim Stynes Story'. It is about the life and challenges of an A.F.L. hero Jim Stynes from Dublin who is fighting the big C. Everyone in Oz is aware of this Irish man and he is our greatest ambassador there.
Another ambassador of the moment is a distant cousin of Benny Morgan, Eoin Morgan from Clara, who is a member of the English Ashes team. They look like they are on their way- as I write- to a first win in the series in Adelaide. The first match at the Ashes series at the GABBA was drawn. That is the reason I'm updating this blog or whatever at this late hour. I hope Eoin gets into the starting line-up for one of the crucial later tests. The loss of Stuart Broad is a big blow to England as most of you will of course know.
Good luck to Boyle GAA stalwarts Martin Purcell, Kevin Tiernan, Lorcan Egan, Aaron O'Connor, Frankie Feighan and Gerry Cregg with the Celebrity Jigs & Reels on Friday night though I hear, in these recessionary times, the I.R.F.U. adm.resistance syndrome is kicking in!
How do F.F. get so many tickets for R.T.E.'s Frontline programme if they are down at 13% of the popular vote? (Most of the oddball comments here are T.C. originated in case people accuse Martin D. of same).
Tomorrow is Budget Day (I'd usually say D. Day but in some quarters this is interpreted as Deliverance and tomorrow certainly is not that...Doomsday perhaps...the Doomsday Book/Disc). It will probably be one of the few times, during a weekday, that I’ll be watching afternoon television.
The Club Lotto, which was due to have been held on Saturday night, last, was a victim of the weather. It has been refixed for this Saturday night in the Moving Stairs with Kathleen Hanmore's team in charge. The jackpot will be €2,200.
Best wishes to our instrumental music group of Conor Tivnan, Caoimhe Morris and Jack Morris who will represent the Club in the Scór na nOg County Finals in Dean Crowe Theatre, Athlone on Sunday next.
The Club extends its sympathy to the Toman, and Tiernan families, Boyle; the Carney family, Boheroe, Elphin and the Carney family Kilbeacanty, Gort; on their recent bereavements.(Pat Carney of Gort was an active member of the Boyle GAA Club in the 70s’ and is a regular visitor to Boyle where he has long friendships). Cecil Tiernan features in an interesting photograph of a Boyle team from the late forties.
We wish bon voyage to Karl Keenan who is emigrating to Australia for a time. Karl will be missed for his involvement as a player and his excellent work on the Minor Board and his general presence and effervescence in all activities. So Cillian Egan if you read this have things sorted when Karl arrives! We hope that he will be back among us before too long.
There was a large attendance at the Minor Board AGM which was held on Thursday night last. A very successful and eventful year was reviewed and thanks was/were (?) extended to everyone involved. The following officers were elected;- Chairperson-Gerry Cregg, Secretary-Charlie Candon, Assistant Secretary-Paul Beirne, Treasurer-Mary Halligan, Asst Treasurer-Olive Filan. The Vice Chairperson's post, which was vacated by Karl Keenan, remains to be filled. Canvassing will not disqualify. The following team managers were appointed;-U8-Ciaran O'Connor, U10-Odran Feely, U12-Gerry Cregg, U14-Kieran McKeon, U16-Jonathan Conroy and U18-Vincent Flanagan. Anyone wishing to help out the Minor Board in any way during the coming year should contact Gerry Cregg. The Senior AGM is scheduled for Sunday 16th January. The Club's Christmas Quiz get-together will be held in the Moving Stairs on Wednesday the 29th of December.
The County Board Convention takes place on Sat. Dec. 18th in Cl. Na Gael. I see that the extensive Co. Board Centre of Excellence at Oran has been passed by An Bord Pleanala. I know nil of the plans to finance the purchase and initial development of this o.t.t. development but I hope it isn’t going to become a ‘big issue’/millstone etc.

The Minor Board AGM will be held in the Clubroom on this Thursday night, Dec. 2nd at 8pm. Parents of the underage players are asked to go along and see what happens behind the scenes in the running of the Club. There should be no fear of being allocated duties to those attending for the first time.

Congratulations to Pat Goldrick on being elected County Minor Board Vice-Chairperson. An understrength U16 panel participated in a very enjoyable 9-a-side blitz in Kilbride on Saturday last and won a number of games to reach the final in which they lost to Oran.
Clifford Haulage and Calor Gas presented a fine set of kit bags to the U16 panel on Tuesday night in the Clubrooms. Hopefully I'll have a pic. here when my Secretary and technical support has time.
Congratulations to my friend Seamus Nugent of Kilglass Gaels on his election as Chairperson of the North Western Board. Seamus's campaign song was;'These shoes are made for...."
Thanks to former Chairperson, Seamus Regan, for his outstanding efforts during his term in office. The following were €20 winners at the most recent Club Lotto draw which was held in the Moylurg Inn recently;- Olive and John Filan, Anne Conboy, Kevin and Maria Lavin, David O'Connor, John and Olivia Kelly, Cian Beirne, Michael and Marie Candon, Mairead Mc Keon, Patricia Langan and the Tighe, Langan, Muller and McKeon Syndicate. The house prize was won by Paddy McCrann. The jackpot wasn't won and it will stand at €2,100 for the next draw which will be held in Daly's on Saturday night next.
The U16s’ finished the 2010 competitive season on a high with a 1.14 to 1.6 victory over Tulsk in the Ahern Cup Final in Abbey Park on Sunday. Boyle dominated the first half and led on the score of Boyle 1.9 Tulsk 0.2. Tulsk made a much better fight in the second half but Boyle were never really in any great danger. The Boyle team was; J.McDermott, L.Brennan, B. Furey, P.Nally, j. Sweeney, T. Mckenna (Capt.), D. Mattimoe, J. Nally, E, Smith, Ml. Lavin, E. McGrath, C.Goldrick, C. Tivnan, E. Lavin, D. East with J.Regan, D. Boylan, J. Morris, S. Filan, P. Godrick. The Club made it three wins on a row in this competition which is played by teams in the North Western Board area for a trophy in memory of former Boyle player, the late Rory Ahern. The cup was donated by the Ahern family. It was presented to the Boyle captain, Tadhg McKenna, by Fr. Niall Ahern, brother of Rory, in the presence of Rory's neices Aisling and Grainne. One remembers also Fergus ahern who presented the cup on Boyle’s first win. Thanks to the U16 panel which had a very successful year, giving many memorable displays of fine football, having already won the County Division 1 League, and to their management of Jonathan Conroy, Gary Goldrick and Gareth Doyle. The Club's Minor Board will hold its AGM on 2nd December in the Clubroom. It will hold its presentation night for underage players on 7th January in St Joseph's Hall.
The Club extends its sympathy to the Devaney family, Faus, Croghan.

Sat. 4.30 pm.
Tomorrow sees the last of game of the season with the U 16s’ taking on Tulsk in the Ahern Cup final at 1 in the A.P. So try and get there with your support.
Scor…we have two entries going forward Karen Carty as Solo Singer and Conor Tivnan, Jack Morris and Caoimhe Morris in instrumental group music.
The Minor Board AGM takes place on Thursday December the 2nd, so if have a contribution or a say take that on board.
The County Board AGM is on Sat. Dec. 18th. One of the items I feel that really needs a study here are the finances and the proposed development in Oran. It seems to me that he County is struggling to clear debts at this time and it doesn’t seem logical to me to initiate a major new development at this time. Indeed if any remedial work was to be done Hyde Park in terms of toilets and general upkeep is in a sorry enough state. This year Roscommon Co. board sees the end of Ml. McGuire’s five year term as Chairman. I believe that, despite some inevitable perhaps petty niggles, that he will be considered among the finest Chairmen that we are lucky to have had. One has to bear in mind the position that existed when he took office and the various issues particularly of his earlier years.
The Minor Presentation Night is on Friday Jan. 7th.
Christmas Quiz Wed. Dec. 29th.
The Senior AGM is in January, provisionally Monday Jan17th. (Ladies AGM dates to come).
One of the major issues we have ourselves is that we need to tackle our own debt in 2011 and to do that we need innovative ideas. If anyone has such an idea (preferably outside the box idea) let the exec. hear it. One idea that has been discussed is a fund-raising walk to Croke Park ending up there on All-Ireland football day. Kilglass did this very successfully spearheaded by my friend Seamus Nugent. I include a missive from the Club Treasurer on the idea:
Tony,
The road to Croker idea came to my mind as an effort to lower the Club's indebtedness on the new club rooms. Having been involved in the project at all stages, I am conscious that before I leave office, that repayment of the loan wouldn't be a huge millstone around the neck of new officers. I would see the 'Road' to Croker’ being divided into different stages with different members walking the various stages. Contact would be made with all the GAA clubs en route to elicit their support. I believe this project could have both a fun and team building dimension for the club and of course net funds (Think Kingless). Most importantly, all Club members have to take ownership of the concept if it is to be a success.
Regards
Kathleen
T.C. The important thing there is that if taken up that ALL members take it up and not the few reliables who have been outstanding over recent years and have developed a grounds and facility which other clubs constantly praise.
Att. Club coaching officer from Willie Hegarty.
On behalf of Roscommon coaching and games development and over the next few weeks your club will be having your annual minor, senior AGM and club meetings. We would like your club to ensure that for 2011 that all your underage coaches and everyone involved with your teams in any capacity in both football and hurling need to have the foundation course done and we would like at least one person from your club or more to undertake the Award 1 youth, Adult and child courses as well. We have our programme of courses ready for 2011 and looking forward to working with your coaches. It is very important for your club that all coaches have a foundation qualification.
Yours in sport
Willie Hegarty

P.S./T.C. if you (readers) have got down to here, I have been watching some of the Ireland v Samoa rugby match (over my shoulder as I write this) and the crowd or lack of it shows that in these times people will react if you try to be too smart in terms of charges etc. Also there is the prominence of the Guinness advertising. Last week v South Africa the ball even was emblazoned with the name of Guinness which I thought was o.t.t. The whole idea of things like Arthur’s Day etc. is a pure con.

12noon (High N..)
Boyle's U16s’ received a walkover in the Ahern Cup semi-final on Sunday. They will meet Tulsk in the final of this competition on Sunday next at 1pm in Abbey Park. Supporters are asked to come to cheer the boys along in what is likely to be the last match of the year for the Club. The U16s’ had a very enjoyable outing to Bundoran Adventure World recently. Thanks to Jonathan Conroy for arranging the outing and to Garreth Doyle, Colette Collins, Majella Hynes and Keith Condron for their generous support of the outing. It is deeply appreciated.
The Club participated in three events in Scór na nOg in Elphin on Friday night last. Karen Carty in solo singing, Conor Tivnan, Jack and Caoimhe Morris in instrumental music qualified for the county semi finals which will be held in two weeks time. The quiz team of Eoin Lavin, Enda Smith and Conor Tivnan missed out on qualification.
Congratulations to our Club and County President John Joe Nerney on being inducted into the County GAA Hall of Fame on Friday night last at the Awards night in the Abbey Hotel. John Joe was also feted at the launch of the St. Dominick’s GAA History in Lecarrow on Saturday night by Liam Gilmartin and Gerry O’Malley.
Dates for your diary; - The minor board AGM will be held in the Clubhouse on 2nd December at 8pm. All parents in particular are asked to come along and see for themselves the work that is being done for the many underage teams which represent the Club. The minor board presentation night will be held in St Joseph's Hall on 7th January. The Club Christmas table quiz will be held on Wednesday the 29th December in the Moving Stairs. The senior club AGM will be held on 17th January. Good luck to Boyle Musical Society on their production of "Sweet Charity" which commences this week. The AGM of the County Board takes place in Clann na Gael’s clubhouse at Johnstown in mid December.
Good luck to all involved in the Musical from Wednesday Nov.10th.
I attended Barry Feely’s Book launch on Friday night and there was a very nice introduction by Brian Leyden a writer from Arigna now living in Leitrim. I have always enjoyed Brian’s talks which as here was introducing a book or paying the funeral tribute to Willie Conlon. Brian has a number of publication including The Home Place and Departures. So do look up Brian’s work on Google and you will not be disappointed. Barry himself was in great form at the launch and a large crowd was present. The book and CD are in a very attractive format with some lovely photographs of Canon Dodd, Johnny Keaveney and Noel Derby a painting reproduction of Sonny Regan. Also there are extensive drawings by Paul Young of ‘Secret of Kells’ fame. So along with the stories there is a mix of other artistic features also on show.
Barry is a lifelong activist and supporter and currently Vice-President of Boyle GAA Club.
Another book launch I attended recently was that produced by a family friend Conor McMorrow who is a political correspondent with the Sunday Tribune. The title of the book is ‘Dail Stars’ which tells the story of former GAA footballers who got to the Dail with the help of their GAA reputations. Currently there are John O’Mahoney, Jimmy Deenihan and Sean Kelly M.E.P. The Roscommon man chosen was Jack McQuillan, who was one of three, the others being Dr. Hugh Gibbons and Dan O’Rourke. So if you want a mix of politics and GAA you should find it here.

St. Dominick’s will launch their Club History on Saturday night in the Lecarrow Community Centre. With the material the have it should be an interesting and valuable resource.

I see there is a growing mood for retaining summer time i.e. not switching the clocks back at the end of October and I would be a supporter of that. I was told that an M.P. in England is pushing a ’Private Member’s Bill’ to that end. I hope it makes progress.
A friend told me of seeing some odd activity and wondering if he would report it to the Gardai. He eventually did whether it was of any help or if his interpretation was right or not he doesn’t know. He felt that if he had the Garda station number in his phone he would be able to report it as he was witnessing it. In these times might it be an idea to have the local Garda station number in ones phone?
I attended the Compromise Rules game on Sat. evening in Croke Park. While the game itself was harmless enough the production, atmosphere and location were great and I was glad I went. It is a great place on a good evening under lights and I hope there is an extension of its ‘under lights’ GAA events.

Friday 10.40pm. It was great to see that Kilglass won their prize in the Kellogs promotion. Thanks to anyone who voted for them on my request. That is the second winner after John Hume.
Minor meeting on Tuesday night the 2nd at 9pm in the club rooms.
The U 16s' feature in the Ahern Cup in Boyle on Sunday at 12.30am v western Gaels.
Wed. 11pm.
The quarter final of the Ahern Cup takes place on Sunday next at 12.30 in Boyle; Boyle v Western Gaels. Strokestown v
The County Minor Board Convention takes place on Monday the 15th of November.
I have just received an email from the Club Sec. saying that he has circulated a form re. nominations and motions for above with a possible meeting on Monday the 1st as details are to be with the County Board by Wed. the 3rd.
Mon. It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for two Boyle teams who were in action against Elphin. The U16s' had a hard earned one point victory-scoreline Boyle 1.12, Elphin 2. 8, in the first round of the Ahern Cup, in the Orchard Park on Saturday last. They will entertain Western Gaels in the quarter final of this competition on Sunday next at 12.30pm in the Abbey Park. While I am a great admirer of the team I feel that they will have to up their game v Western Gaels who I’m told are a pretty good side. This I think is the last on-field action of the season.

The U21s' bowed out of this year’s championship with a defeat to Elphin in an excellent game of football in Croghan on Saturday evening. The half-time score was Elphin 3.1 Boyle 1.5. The final score was Elphin 4.9 Boyle 2.9. I was really impressed by the commitment and football of the side against what I expect is a good Elphin side. While there were good performances from the usual suspects the people who really impressed me were a group who haven’t played much Gaelic football in recent years i.e. Tomas Conroy, Shane Battles, Colin Brennan and Jim Suffin. As the Gospel says- approximately- ‘There is more joy in heaven (should that be a capital H?) for the lost person who returns’. Thanks to the management of Gary, David and Bernie and the entire panel for their committment throughout the season. The Club wishes Elphin –a club I have good time for- the best of luck in the remaining stages of the championship.
The Boyle starting team was as Follows: C. Beirne, Ml.P. Gilmartin, C. Boylan, T. Lowe, M. Goldrick, C. Brennan, Ml. O’Donnell. C. Cox, D. Callaghan, C. Cox, D. O’Connor (Capt.), S. Battles, D. Smith, T. Conroy, J. Suffin with P.Lavin and M.O’Connor.
Entries are being finalised for the Scór na nOg competitions which will be held in Elphin on Friday November the 5th and Saturday November the 6th. Those who have not done so are asked to contact Martin Dolan at 086 2413529 immediately.
There will be a meeting of the Club in the Clubroom (?) on this Tuesday night at 9pm.
This is a final reminder to support Kilglass Gaels in the Kelloggs Field of Dreams by text or by email as this Thursday 28th is the final date for voting. The result will become known generally during the first ad. break of the Late Late Show on Friday night.
It is great to see the development of the pitch at St. Joseph’s Boys School. The school will have a range of facilities second to none when this development matures. I don’t know the management committee but they are certainly doing a great at getting the funding for all the developments at the school.
Ntdwgaa
1. Why all the hoopla about Wayne Rooney in this country? Why does the national television station see fit to lead their sports news with such an innocuous item for Irish viewership?
2. I was really annoyed and embarrassed with the wallaby incident last week.
3. Did anyone see the Lynch lady on the Late Late Show, on October the 15th I think. It was just awful……….by me!
4. Reading a poem by Seamus Heaney from his collection Human Chain called ‘The Conway Stewart’ (pen) has prompted me to bring an old fountain pen I had out of retirement but I need ink. If anyone knows where I might source a bottle of ink (conveniently enough!) I would be thankful.

Thurs. 9.30. This is like CNN's rolling news....The U 16 Ahern Cup game takes place in Elphin on Sat. at 2.30 so it is a looped journey for the addicts.
Thurs. 8.30pm. I am informed that the U 21 game V Elphin is now in Croghan on Sat. at 4.30. I haven't heard if this has implications for the U 16 Ahern Cup game, also v Elphin, but I imagine it should logically as Dr. Spock might say.
The Late Late on Friday night is the final say for Ireland's Greatest and I am recommending votes for John Hume by texting Great -4 to 53125.
Also the Kellogs Field of Dreams for Kilglass has just 8 days to go so Seamus Nugent and Co. will be putting on ths final big push as they are leading. To vote for free online open Kellogs Field of Dreams/click on Kilglass/click on voting box and then enter your email address to register (I presume that is ok!) and you'll get instructions from there. Or vote by text to Kellogs Connacht to 52799. That is my last call on all that. Thank you in anticipation! T.
P.S. A friend of mine when asked why he wasn't on the Legend's Calendar replied: 'I didn't make the weight!'
11pm.
Lotto: The following were €20 winners at the most recent Club Lotto draw which was held in Creightons;- Joe Sweeney, Eileen and Gerry Callaghan, Nora Pat Stewart, Finola Doherty, Marie Lavin, Paul Condon, C. Wynne, J.P. Molloy, Fiona O'Grady and Ronald Moffatt. The house prize was won by Ashton Coles. The next draw will be held on Saturday night next with Team E (Pat Goldrick's) in charge. The jackpot will be €1,900.
The Feelystone junior team fell at the final hurdle on Sunday in Castlerea when they went down to a four point defeat to St Faithleach’s in the County Junior ‘B’ Final. While this team has had a number of very good performances this season this wasn’t one of them. Though Boyle started well and went into a four point to nil lead they lost their way subsequently with a good goal chance going a begging and at half time the scores were level at 4 points each. Things started evenly enough in the second half were another missed goal chance led to a leak of confidence. and St. Faithleach’s gradually took control taking the last five points to win by 10 points to 6. Well done to the management of David O'Connor, Bernie Shannon and Paul Beirne and the entire panel for their committment throughout the year. Thanks also to Feelystone for their continued sponsorship.
The U 21s’ secured a hard earned draw with Castlerea in the Division 1 Championship in Abbey Park on Saturday evening last. This means that their final group game against Elphin on Saturday next at Frenchpark at 5pm is a "must-win" match and scoring differences may become a factor.
The U16s’ will play their Ahern Cup game against Elphin as a curtain-raiser to the U 21 game-see fixtures for starting time.
Well done to all three Roscommon teams on their successes in the Connacht Club Championships on Sunday.
Congratulations to Boyle matriarch Mary Kate Hanmore who celebrated her 101st birthday at the weekend.
Entries for the upcoming Scór na nOg competitions are to be in by the 27th October. The Club is anxious to have participation in all or most of the following events;-set dancing, figure dancing, solo singing, instrumental music, quiz, novelty act and recitation. Competitors must be under 17 as at 1st January 2011. Those interested should contact Martin Dolan at 086 2413529.

10.45
The minors brought down the curtain on their 2010 season with a loss to Roscommon Gaels in the Division 1 League semi-final in Abbey Park on Sunday. While no trophies have been won, the lads reached the championship final and the league semi-final with a team that contains many who are eligible again next year. They are a fine side with many fine players who we hope will form a big part of Boyle teams in the coming years. They were unlucky to have come up against what looks like an exceptional Roscommon Gaels side who have no obvious weak links and are a well oiled machine with a lot of skill and confidence. Well done to Vincent and his management team and the entire panel for their efforts throughout the year. Thanks also to the parents and loyal supporters.
The U21s lost by four points to another good side, Padraig Pearses in a windswept Pairc an Piarsaigh on Saturday evening. Pearses led by 7 points to 1 at half time playing with a strong wind. Hard as Boyle tried they failed to make serious inroads in the second half really needing a goal and the final score ended at Pearses 10 Boyle 6.They will entertain Castlerea on Saturday evening next at 5pm in a must-win encounter. The Club wishes Conor Boylan and Jim Suffin a speedy recovery from injuries sustained in Saturday's game. It is of course regrettable that the side are scarce in numbers a dilemma faced by many clubs with Failes having to pull out of the competition and other clubs struggling seriously. There must be a need for reduced number teams being allowed at this level as it is down the line or maybe it is time for clubs to face the reality of amalgamations.
The U16s’ are still awaiting the winners of St. Barry’s V Elphin this coming week end in the Ahern Cup. It looks as if this will be the end of the under-age season.
The Feelystone Junior team will play St Faithleach’s in the County Junior ‘B’ Final on Sunday next at 2pm. Training continues on Wednesday evening at 7.30.
All team managers are asked to ensure that the last person out of the Abbey Park following training secures the main gate.
There will be a Primary Schools football blitz in the Abbey Park on Wednesday morning next.
The Club extends its sympathy to the Beirne family Tarmon and to the Carney and Gunn families, Elphin on recent bereavements.
Boyle was well represented at the memorial mass for Dermot Earley in Micheal Glavey’s complex on Sunday last.
Ladies Club:
Commiserations to the U14 girls who lost out to a stronger St Brigid’s team in the county championship semi final. Thanks to the panel and the management for their dedication throughout the season and to the parents and supporters.

Wed. 4pm. 'Twenty Years a Growing' anyone?
The minor game is at 12 on Sunday not 2 as posted below!!
Boyle U14 girls,
Division 1A semi-final game, has been rescheduled for Saturday 9th October in the Abbey Park at 5pm, versus St Brigids. Good luck to this team who have given huge commitment since training commenced in March. The Ladies Club wish to thank the following sponsors of the new kit bags for the U14 team; John Moran (Fruit & Veg), Michael Hunt (Veterinary Practice), Joan McLoughlin (Scissors Palace) and Matt Burke (Green Street Jeans). The girls on this U14 team must be commended for securing these sponsors, nothing like player pressure!
Mon. 4th 11.30pm.
PLEASE: I have asked before that people put CLEAN recyclables in the blue recycling bins and rubbish in the black bins only. I cannot try and fob off dirty rubbish as recyclable material. If the rubbish bins are full don’t then just use the blue bins for rubbish. Put it in a bag and leave in the building for disposal. I actually thought things had improved but this week showed a downturn. Also maybe people could empty the bottles. I pulled a bin out today and it felt as if there were blocks in it!
At a meeting last week the club’s difficult financial position was outlined. If anyone has new/reasonable/ imaginative/practical ideas to enable us raise funds short term or as a big project next year please let us know.
Lotto: The following were €20 winners in the most recent Club Lotto draw which was held in the Royal Hotel;- Michael O'Dowd, Pat Carty, Finbar Feeley, Monica O'Connor, Marie Lavin, Stephen Hamill, Declan Sheerin, John Dennedy, Noreen Hurley and Paul Brehony. The house prize was won by Jim Clarke. There was no jackpot winner. This week's draw will be held in Creighton's on Saturday night next with Mary Clifford's team in charge. The jackpot will be €1,800.
The U12s lost their championship play-off game to Eire Og. This ends their playing season, but we look forward to seeing them back next year. Thanks to the entire panel and to Gerry Cregg and his management team and also to the parents for their co-operation throughout the year.
Pride of place this week goes to our U16 footballers who won the County Division 1 League with a very impressive win over a gallant Strokestown team in Elphin on Saturday. Well done to the panel and the management team of Jonathan Conroy, Garreth Doyle and Gary Goldrick for their hard work and committment throughout the season and especially in raising the team to the pitch of last Sat’s. gritty performance. Thanks also to Aidan and Aaron for their help in the final. The following is the title winning panel;-Jason McDermott, Jack Morris, Brian Furey, Paddy Nally, Luke Brennan, Tadhg McKenna, Dylan Mattimoe, Jordan Nally, Enda Smith (Capt), Micheal Lavin, Evan McGrath, Joe Sweeney, Dylan East, Eoin Lavin, Colin Goldrick, Shane Filan, Jonathan Regan, Conor Tivnan, Diarmuid Boylan, Brian McQuaid, Niall Brennan, Patrick Goldrick. Elphin was also the venue for the Feelystone Junior team's comprehensive victory over Kilmore in the North West Junior ‘B’ Final replay on Saturday. Record books are being checked to see if the club ever before won two trophies on the same day! They now look forward to a county final date with St Failes in a few weeks time. The two wins are a great morale booster for the club after a couple of disappointing results. The U 16 result shows that teams can have an off day and as the saying goes get right back on the horse successfully. Congrats especially to father and son Noel and Tadgh who were both central to the wins on Sat. It was great to see Dunsey (Mark O’Donohoe) back to his best and I think a 3.3 fest.
The Minors play their League Semi-Final on Sunday the 10/10/’10 at 2pm not at 12 as advertised in places.
The U21s will commence their Division 1 championship on Saturday next when they take on Padraig Pearses in Pairc an Piarsaigh at 5pm. They have a series of games in the coming weeks as they are in a four team group so they will have at least three games with I think two teams to qualify for the semi-finals. They had a worthwhile challenge with Western Gaels on Sunday last when a few old timers returned to the fold.
Congratulations are extended to Donal and Aideen Kelly on the birth of a baby son and to Stephen and Veronica Tonra on the birth of a baby daughter.
Well done to our neighbours Ballinameen on winning the county junior title on Sunday.
Boyle Club is delighted to welcome home former Ballinameen footballer Kevin McGarry who has returned from New Zealand, last week, following his unfortunate accident. We wish him well. Ladies Club;
The U14 semi final versus St Brigid's which was due to have been played on Sunday will be played in the Abbey Park on Saturday next.

See the times for two fixtures today Sat, at 3 and 4.30 U 16 and Junior. Does anyone have the loan of a copy of the Irish classic book 'Twenty Years A'Growing' (Fice Blian ag Fas)? If you do give me a call.
Week of Monday Sept. 27th 2010@5.30.
There will be a Club meeting on this Tuesday at 8.30pm in the Clubroom.
U 10 Blitz: The Club hosted a very successful Roscommon Herald U10 football blitz in the Abbey Park on Saturday. Thanks to all who helped to stage the event and to all who participated. Congratulations to the cup winners. Strokestown and to our own U10s’ who won the shield. Once again it was one of ‘the’ spectacles in the Abbey Park this summer.
The U12s’ defeated Padraig Pearses in the Division 1 Championship on Sunday. They have now finished their programme of games and they await the results of other outstanding games to determine whether they have qualified for the knock-out stage. (My information is that they have qualified).
Important week end fixtures: Every week-end seems to throw up important fixtures and next week end is no different. The U16s’ will play their league final in Elphin on Saturday next at 3pm. This will be part of a double header in which the Feelystone team will replay the North Junior B Championship final versus Kilmore at 4.30pm. Those teams played a draw, in a rugged encounter, in Kilbride on Friday night last.
The minors had a disappointing result and performance against Roscommon Gaels in the Division 1 County Final in Hyde Park on Sunday. The Gaels looked a very strong and well oiled machine and won comfortably. However, all is not lost for the season as they have a league final to look forward to. Also it is an achievement to get to a county ‘A’ final and if you’re not there you certainly have no chance at all. This is a young panel with most of them are eligible for minor again next year and indeed many players are still under 16. Thanks to the large Boyle support in the Hyde. Thanks also to Tom Kearney of Quality Meats, Sligo for his sponsorship of tops for the minor panel in which they looked resplendent on Sunday. So thanks to the team and their selectors Vinnie Flanagan, Jnr. Smith and Tom Kearney and those who assisted.
Well done to Michael Brennan and his team who officiated in the Senior Final in which St. Brigid’s showed their experience, strength and ability to pull away in the final quarter as they ran out convincing winners. However this is a young Elphin team and a lot has been achieved this year and hopefully they can build on same. There are plenty of Boyle connections with the team in terms of the Goldricks/Creggs/McCranns; the Collins family and the Kennedys and Paul Beirne’s nephews (Martin’s boys) also.
The U21s’ are in preparation for their championship opener away to Padraig Pearses on the weekend of 9th/10th October.
Congratulations to our neighbours, Eastern Harps on winning the Sligo senior title. I suppose there is no chance that the Connacht Club Championship fixture which I believe pits Eastern Harps against St. Brigid’s could be played in Boyle.
The Club expresses its deepest sympathy with Marian Aherne and family on the sad passing of Fergus.

Ladies Club
The U14 girls lost to St Ciarans in the U14 Division 1 championship, thus making qualification for the quarterfinals more difficult. They are depending on results elsewhere for qualification.
Boyle U14 girls are through to Division 1A semi finals and will play St Brigid's at 1pm in Boyle, on Sunday 3rd October. Support will be appreciated!
The Ladies Club would like to thank King & Moffatt and King Kebabish (Carrick on Shannon) for sponsorship of the new U14 tops.

Week 37 Sept. 23rd:
Lotto:The following were the €20 winners at the last Club Lotto draw which was held in An Craoibhin;-Ciaran and Mairead McKeon, Donal Kelly, Michael and Michelle McGrath, Mary Keenan, David O'Connor, Kathleen O'Mahoney, John McPherson, Brian Moran, Tom Connolly, and Christian Richardson. The house prize was won by Mattie Lyons. There was no jackpot winner and there will be a jackpot of €1,700 for this weeks draw which will be held in the Royal Hotel on Saturday night. Team C will be in charge.
Pride of place this week goes to our minor footballers who had an excellent win over a gallant St Brigids in the Division 1 County Semi Final on Saturday last. They will play Roscommon Gaels on Sunday next in Hyde Park at 2.30pm in the County Final. This will be a major occasion for the panel and their management and the Club in general. Supporters are asked to travel in numbers to the Hyde and to perhaps congregate together in the ground with flags and banners to show support. The erection of flags and bunting in the town would also be appreciated.
Previous Boyle minor teams to win a county 'A' title equivalent as follows;
1931 included Mickie Morris, Paddy Maughan, M. Leonard, Tommy Gaughran, B. Beirne, Reddie Cryan, Dick Cryan, J. Sheerin?, Mattie MGill, J. Kilfeather, J.M. Earley??
1938: D. Kearns?, J. McCarthy, J.J.Nerney, T. Moran, N. Mullaney?, J. Casey?, Eddie McDermott, Tom Carroll, J. McCreevy. Tom Cox, D. Boyd, P. Dowd, Roger O'Hara, -Frizzel??, J. McDermott, P. Leonard, W. Burns, H. Daly, S. Gaughran, M.Ryan.
1939: P. Leonard (Capt.), S. Gaughran (Vice-Capt.), M. Ryan, T. Cox, N. Flaherty?, E. McDermott?, J.J.Nerney, H. Daly, R. O'Hara, P. McLoughlin?, D.Kearns, D. Boyd, S. Lavin, P.McDermott, J. Bambrick, P. Dowd, V. Beirne?,T. Moran. I have a question mark after a good few names and if anyone has any biographical info. on those I'd be glad to have it. (Note I've had a preliminary chat with John Joe on this so ....). John Joe reckons the main organiser of thsi team was Martin Regan who purchased the Abbey park at one stage.
The 1996 'B' winning panel who defeated Ml. Glavey's was as follows:
C. Nangle, S. Corrigan, C. Garvin, S. Cooke, D. Suffin, C. Shanley, S. Supple, M.O' Boyle, C. O'Dowd, K. McKeon, A. O'Connor, T. Garvin, S. Tonra, L. Conroy, A. Tiernan, L. Conboy, J. Healy, D. Woods, R. O'Donohoe, D. Kelly, P. Flaherty (Capt.), D. Conroy, D. Tiernan, J. Siggins, N. McCrann, E. Commins, and A. Cooke. this team had a wealth of experience in the management such as; T. McGovern, J. Keenehan, T. Kelly, T. Commins and J. Healy.

The minor final will be the curtain raiser to the County Senior Final between Elphin and St Brigids and the Club is honoured that our popular referee, Michael Brennan, has deservedly been appointed as referee for the game. We wish Michael and his team of officials-Billy Hanmore, John Brennan, Bernie Shannon and David O'Connor the best of luck on the occasion and we also wish Elphin every success in the final.
The U12s are due to host Padraig Pearses in the Division 1 Championship at the weekend-see fixtures .
The U10s participated in a blitz in Hyde Park on Saturday last. The U10 Roscommon Herald Blitz for teams from the north of the County will be held in the Abbey park on Saturday.
The Feelystone junior team will play the North Junior B Final versus Kilmore under lights in Kilbride on Friday night at 9pm. The Club wishes to thank Boyle Credit Union for its generous sponsorship of a set of kit bags for the McGovern Directional Drilling senior team. Congratulations are extended to all Club members who received their Junior Cert results last week.
Sympathy is extended to Pauline Carty, Knockarush on the death of her mother.

I attended a County Board meeting on Tuesday the 21st with a number of interesting items from that. I'll post here- as I seem to say a lot now- anon.
Ladies Club
Abbey Park hosted two County Finals on Saturday-the replayed Junior A Final and the Intermediate Final. Thanks is extended to the Park Committee for having the grounds and facilities in excellent shape and to the Boyle Ladies Club members who assisted on the day. The U14s had a good win over Strokestown during the week and they are on course for a semi final place.

Fergus Ahern R.I.P.
First of all I must express my and the club's deepest sympathies with the family of Fergus Ahern who died suddenly on Sunday night. The contribution of Fergus to Boyle town, especially in the area of the arts, has been immense. Fergus liked the good things and things of quality in life from art and artistic endevour, wine, music and rugby with hs passion for Munster. I remember following his blog, on realboyle, when Ireland did poorly in the Rugby World Cup in France and his texted blog became more a food lovers trail of Paris than much ado about rugby.
The death of Fergus follows a few short years after the death of his brother Rory who was prominently involved in Boyle GAA in the late sixties and early seventies. Shortly after Rory's sudden death the Ahern family generously donated a cup, to the GAA, in his memory. This is played for at U 16 level and Boyle have been most successful there. Fergus was present at the inaugeral final and was proud to present the cup to the winning Boyle team. It is difficult to imagine that we will not now encounter Fergus at various venues and events throughout the town but he will not be far from our mind's eye in those scenarios. May he rest in peace
Minors in County 'A' Final on Sunday:
I've had trouble with my email for a day or so hence the delay in updating the blog which will be done later tonight hopefully. Anyways just a couplr of preliminary notices. This is another big week end for teh club with the minors taking on Roscommon Gaels in the Hyde on Sunday at 2.30, before the senior Final of St. Brigid's v Elphin.
This is a great achievement for this talented team as they defeated St. Brigid's in the semi-final convincingly last Saturday in the replay. It is hard to credit but Boylw have not won a minor 'A' title (they won a 'B' title, with Paul Flaherty as captain, in '96 defeating Ml. glavey's) since the days of John Joe Nerney in '38 and '39. They had also won in '31. So it would be a great success if they were to win on Sunday. Hopefully the town will get behind the team as they alwys do for finals and that the flags will fly and the support get to the Hyde on Sunday.
I'll post the teams anon.

Wed. 9.30am Update. The U 8s' time for Sat. has been changed to 12 to 2pm leaving the Abbey Park at 10.30. Fixtures and times a moveable feast.
Tues. 3.30:We wish to congratulate Ml. Brennan who, I'm told, has been nominated to referee the County Senior final between Elphin and St. Brigid's on the 26th. Ml. I'm reliably informed, and it doesn't come as any surprise to me, has had a great year as referee. I think this is Michael's first senior final. It is a due accolade for one of Boyle's most loyal and longest serving officials and workers.
Minor Semi-Final at 12 on Sat. in Kilbride.

We would like to thank Boyle Credit Union for the sponsorship of a fine set of bags, to the senior team, which were presented at a photo op last Thursday evening. With the way the economy is now they they could could be used in a route we would not wish. Indeed the Credit Union is an organisation which people generally, and young people especially, should keep in mind when saving sorta (!) or borrrowing now that it is so difficult to get loans from the banking sector. As the logo on the bags says: 'Run by the People of Boyle for the People of Boyle'. Once again thanks to the people of the Credit Union in Boyle and best wishes with your fine and so important oganisation.
Congratulations to Elphin who have qualified for the County Senior Final for the first time in yonks. Elphin, in the fifities were the dominant force in senior club football and contested 11 of 13 finals from 1948 to 61 or so. I think theymay have only contested one final or best two since then. Anyways we always got on well with Elphin and it would be great if they took the senior cup north on a rare sojourn, the last time I think was Kilmore in '83, They will have a tough opposition in St. Brigid's of course but if you're not there you have no chance. Elphin's progress endorses an opinion I gathered on seeing them playing very well in the Abbey Park in the O'Rourke Cup earlier this summer.

The U12s had a mixed week in their Division 1 Championship. They had a hard earned win over Eire Og in difficult weather conditions in Loughglynn on Monday of last week while they had a one point loss to Clan na Gael in the Abbey Parkon Sunday evening. They will travel to Kiltoom to play St. Brigids at 6.30pm on Monday next 19th in their next outing. They are currently within the top four and victories in the remaining games are necessary to ensure qualification for play offs. The U12 B team is due to play St Barrys on Saturday evening next at 6.15pm in Tarmonbarry. T
The U16s are in preparation for their next outing.
The Minors drew with St Brigids in Ballyleague on Sunday in the Division 1 Minor Championship semi final. Both side had chances of victory, so a second chace should please all. The replay will be on Saturday at 12 pm in Kilbride.
The Feelystone junior team will meet Kilmore in the North Junior B Final on Sat.
The McGovern Directional Drilling senior panel and mamagement had a very enjoyable end of season dinner in the Moving Stairs on Friday night last. A feature of the night was the eagerly awaited announcement and presentation of awards to panel members who distinguished themselves in various categories during the year. It is felt that this will become an annual event that will become a Golden Oscar/Rasberry like event for the team.
All team managers are reminded that as the weather conditions are deteriorating the Abbey Park playing pitch cannot be used for training. All training MUST take place in either of the Park training pitches and the direction of the pitch co-ordinator must be followed in such matters.

Ladies Club
The U14 girls had a very creditable draw with Padraig Pearses in Pairc an Phiarsigh on Sunday. They will play Strokestown on Wednesday evening at 6.30 instead of previously nominated 7pm in the Abbey Park and they will meet St Ciarans in the same venue on Sunday next at 7pm.

Monday, September 6, 2010

Thurs. 8.30pm: There is a further change to the minor fixture. It is now on Sunday in Ballyleague at 12 due to a bereavement in St. Brigid's club area.
Item 2: Though he will hardly see this I send my heartiest congratulations to Eoin Kennedy. He secured his seventh consecutive All-Ireland 60x30 Senior Singles title at Abbeylara, Co. Longford on Sat. the 4th when he defeated Westmeath's Robbie McCarthy in a thrilling final 21 to 20 and 21 to 15. Eoin is the son of Eugene and the grandson of a former champion Paddy and the nephew of Pat and Joe. While Boyle was once the heartbeat of the great and noble game of handball producing such champions as Paddy Perry, the Clarkes, Gaughrans and Paddy Reid among others, Eoin has long since joined the pantheon of great handballers from or linked to Boyle. It is such a pity that the game has declined to such a degree now and it would be a real optimist that would envisage its revival to old glories of its golden age. Se mo thuarim nach bfeicmid sin go deo. I dteanga do sean-athair comhghairdeas a Eoin. (Forgive my gaeilge...I must do better!)

2. I was glad though I may be in the minority-not for the first time-that Croke Park succeeded in keeping the crowd off the pitch on Sunday after the game. It really gives the winning team a time to celebrate with their playing colleagues, manager, trainers and those central and closest to the effort, in a civilised way. This was only mentioned to me lately but it also prevents the losing side from getting abuse from disappoined supporters. It's hard to imagine that but apparently it happens. The Kilkenny dynasty has taken a hit. I'm a great believer in history and am aware that all dynasties tumble. Remember the poem 'Ozymandias'? Will Tipp. be able to establish one? Will the cats come back next year? Isn't it something to be wondering what might happen next year already?
3. There is a get-together for the Boyle senior players in the Moving Stairs tomorrow Friday night at 8.....though I just got a text for training at 7.30 so I might be a bit late!
4. For the funniest piece ever, bar none, you could try and locate Effin Eddie on U tube or the Aherlow GAA web site or get a D.V.D copy from the one and only Eddie Moroney, Ballycrehane, Aherlow, Tipperary for €25.

Thurs: 1.30. There is a change of venue and time for the minor game on Sat. the 11th. It is now in Ballyleague at 4.15.
Wed. 6.30pm. The week-end fixtures are as follows: Sat. at Tulsk the Minors play St, Brigid's in the county semi-final at 4.45 (pm in case someone calls me!). All support appreciated as always. This is a very good side who play top class football so be advised. Are Brigids going for a serious number of titles in a row?
(On Sat. evening in Boyle, Sh. Gaels v Eire Og at 6pm. Intermediate relegation play-off).
Sun Div. 1 U 12 s' play Cl. na Gael at Boyle at 12.
Mon. evening at 6.30 Div. 4 U 12s' v St. Ronan's.

*******Please support Kilglass in their quest to win €100, 000 pitch makeover in the Kelloggs promotion by texting: Kelloggs Connacht to 53799. You should get a response, apparently giving you a pin. from whoever. You are only allowed one vote per day. If you don't get a response check spelling etc.
You could forward this to Theresa Kenoy at 087 9877814 and I presume they might be able to use that pin to vote for you.*****

Mon. 12.50: I've had an almost immediate response to my cowboy note borrowed from the golf club notes. My contact suggested that the cast from Bonanza as appropriate. I am not casting it though!
Mon. 12 noon.
The Club requests all members and supporters to assist in the efforts of Kilglass Gaels in winning the top prize of €100,000 in the Kelloggs Field of Dream promotion. They have qualified to represent Connacht as one of the four provincial representatives. They need all our votes to come out on top. To vote for Kilglass, just text Kelloggs Connacht to 53799-you can do this once per day- or log on to the Kelloggs Field of Dreams website. It would be a fine achievement for Kilglass with a fine reward so do what you can for Seamie and co.

Borrowed from Ml's golf notes: "An finally…….one of the highlights of the weekend was standing on the first tee watching the fiveball of John Keenehan, Tom Commons, Denis Dodd, Michael & Brian Furey gracefully appearing over the horizon in a scene reminiscent of an old cowboy western". ('The Return of the Magnificent Five')
Did anyone get the picture or maybe like the raising of the U.S. flag on Iowa Jima during W.W.11 we might have to renact it?

I see an interesting concept coming to Boyle in early October that of an 'Open Day' to highlight what the town and area has to offer.
Lotto:The following were the €20 winners at the most recent Boyle Club Lotto draw which was held in Mattimoes; Martin Henry, Jonathon Lyons, Tommy Vesey, Joe Simon, Seamus Cooney, Oisin O'Dowd, Joe Ryan (taxi), Oriel Regan, Gregory Cunningham AND J. P. Molloy. The house prize was won by Alice Mattimoe. The jackpot was not won and it will stand at €1,600 for this week's draw which will be held on Saturday night next with Team B in charge.

The U 12s will entertain Clan na Gael in the Division 1 Championship on Sunday next in the Abbey Park at 12 noon.
The U16s are continuing their preparations for their upcoming Division 1 County Final and for the forthcoming Ahern Cup competition.
The minors who had a very goo win over Cl. na Gael last week, will play St Brigids in the Division 1 County Semi-Final on this Friday evening-see fixtures for details.
The McGovern Directional Drilling team finished their O'Rourke Cup campaign with a narrow loss to Western Gaels on Saturday evening last. This defeat means that they have missed qualification for the semi finals on scoring difference. They have had a very promising campaign in this competition against the top senior clubs in the county and we remember fine performances especially against St. Aidan's in Ballyforan. This ends their competitive season. Thanks is extended to Gary and his management team of David, Bernie and co. and the entire panel of players for their dedication and committment throughout the season.
the Feelystone Junior team had comprehensive win over Kilglass Gaels in the North Junior 'B' Championship in Croghan on Sunday. They will meet the winners of Michael Glavey's and Kilmore in the Northern Final.(Well done to Finbarr and company on the Triathlon event).
The U21 Division I Championship is due to commence in early October with an away game versus Padraig Pearses followed by a home game with Castlerea and a trip to Frenchpark to play Elphin.
The Abbey Park is scheduled to host an Intermediate Championship relegation game between Eire Og and Shannon Gaels on Saturday evening at 6pm. All Club officials are asked to be present circa 5pm to act as stewards.
Congratulations are extended to Shane Feely and Sharon McCormack who were married recently.
Best wishes to Tadgh and Tomas who are recovering from surjery to injuries incurred in action.
Best wishes also to our diaspora constituency in far flung places. X number of days to Christmas!
Ladies Club;
Boyle U14 Girls are scheduled to play Padraig Pearses in Pairc an Phiarsaigh on Sunday evening next at 7pm.

Sat 1 am. Don't forget Boyle v Western Gaels in the O'Rourke Cup this Sat. evening in Boyle at 5. If Boyle win they can qualify for the div. 1 semi-finals. If they lose it is the end of the season.
Wed. 10.30 pm.
The following are two very good pics. by Gerry Morris from the 12s' game v Strokestown which they won by a point at Stroketown. The first pic. shows the pivotal/central role of the coach. The second shows a kind of distracted happiness. Was it after the match? If anyone has any captions I'd be pleased to hear them at 0868163399.

Now boys this is the way I see it......I've a feeling I'm being watched

Which camera please?
While the weekend was disappointing with the Intermediate and U 16 losses and shook my faith in the strenth of the position of the club, Tuesday evening was a differnet story and a kind of rehabilitation. The minors had a very good win, in a very competitive game, over Clann na Gael Boyle 0.14 Cl. na Gael 1. 7 in the minor c'ship quarter final. There were many fine spirited performances here, against tenacious dogged opposition, which one expects from Cl. na Gael and when Boyle play in the semi-final I hope they get the support they deserve. I will not mention best for at this stage. There are clues below for the forward half of the side but there were fine defensive elements to the side also agains a livley pacey side. The team was: J. McDermott, L. Harrington, T. Lowe, P. Sweeney, Ml. Hanmore, M. Goldrick, C. Lavin, C. Cox (0.1), D. Smith (0.6, 2 frees), N. Keville, C. O'Neill (0.2 frees), E. Smith (0.3) C. Griffin, C. McLoughlin, M.O'Connor with C. Goldrick (0.2). The managers are Vinnie Flanagan/Jnr. Smith/Bernie Shannon.
The half time score was Boyle 0.7 Cl. na Gael 1.3.

Mon. 9.30 pm:

Sun. 11.50pm. Boyle GAA Notes:
It was a disappointing week-end for Boyle with two defeats in important games. The U 16 team, playing way below their best, went down to a very good Strokestown team in the U 16 ‘A’ Final at Hyde Park on Sunday evening. Goals for Strokestown either side of half time defined the result. They led by 1.8 to 1 point at half time playing with the wind. Another goal immediately after half time basically ended the game as a contest. All the contenders for ‘man of the match’ came from Strokestown despite the best efforts of the Boyle players McDermott in goals, Luke Brennan, Brian Furey and Joe Sweney in backs and Colin Goldrick up front. However well done to the team and their management and I’m sure they realise they were beaten by a fine Strokestown side with a number of fine players.
The McGovern Directional Drilling Intermediate side went down to St. Dominick’s in the quarter final at Tulsk on Saturday evening. Boyle had a very poor first half when St. Dominick’s dominated and led on the score of St. Dominick’s 1.6 Boyle 0.3 at half time. Boyle did better in the second half and might have drawn the game as they had their chances towards the end. The final score was St. Dominick's 1.7 Boyle 1.6. They now return to the O’Rourke Cup league where they meet Western Gaels on Saturday evening next the 4th with a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals if they win.
The U 12s’ had a one point win over Strokestown on Sunday last. The minors play Clann na Gael in the championship in Boyle on Tuesday evening the 30th.
The Feeelystone Junior side play Kilglass in the Northern semi-final on Sunday next –see fixtures for details.
The minor club officials deserve special thanks for their efficient running of the Garda Cup Final won convincingly by Western Gaels over Strokestown and also their hosting of the U-8 Blitz on a wet Saturday morning last.
The Ladies Snrs. Lost to Strokestown in Boyle on Sunday thus ending their Championship challenge. The U 14 girls had a win over Western Gaels last week.
The club expresses its sympathy to Frank Dwyer on the recent death of his brother Benny.

Fri. 1.30 pm: Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Tadgh Egan after his surgery. I could write a thesis on the infamous cruciate.
Fri. 9.30am. The Intermediate game v Dominick's on Sat. is at 6 in Tulsk not 5 as I've posted earlier below. T.
Tues. 8.30pm: Boyle Minors play Clann na Gael in the first round of the championship in the Abbey Park on Tuesday next August the 31st at 7 sorta.
I've had a text from Theresa Kenoy asking me to support the Kilglass effort to win a €100,000 pitch makeover from Kellogs. You can support it if you log onto www.kellogs.ie/field of dreams and register your vote or text Kellogs to connacht to 53799 (Also asked by my pal Seamus Nugent). For the details look at page 2 Sport the Roscommon Herald. So spread the word there. It would be good to give Seamus and co a lift.
Tues. 9.30am: Two big games this week-end. The Intermediates play St. Dominick's on Sat. in Tulsk at 5 and the U 16s' contest the County 'A' final on Sunday evening in Hyde Park at 6.45. If Boyle could win this final it would be the first time since the team of James Dodd, Sean Daly, Jnr. Dooley, Freddie Daly, Gerry Carty -1970 or so- and co to win an U 16 'A' final. We did an 'A' under 12 in 1996 with Roch, and Killian with a K Egan, Ml. O'Dowd, Lee McKilleen and co. Hopefully there will be great support for the teams this week end.
Mon. 8pm.The Under 14 girls will play Western Gaels on this Wednesday in Frenchpark at 7pm and Clann na Gael next Sunday at 7pm in Boyle

Mon. 9.30am.
The following were €20 winners at the most recent Club Lotto draw which was held recently in Wynnes; Roy Shannon, Owen Garvin, Chris Callan, Noel McKenna, Mary and Liam Coyle, Kathleen Furey, Keith Healy, A. Wheeler, Michelle Simon and "THe Winner". The house prize was won by Breege Simon. The next draw will be held on Saturday night next in Mattimoe’s and the jackpot will be €1,500.

The U14s finished their season with a one goal loss to Western Gaels on Thursday evening last. Thanks to the panel of players and to Bernard Shannon and his management team for the efort put in by all throughout the season.
The U16s’ will play Strokestown in the Division 1 Championship Final on Sunday next-see fixtures for venue and time. This fine team merits the full support of the Club and all football supporters on this important occasion. It would be particularly appropriate if the senior club players supported this and other under-age sides.
The minors will commence their Division 1 Championship campaign with a home fixture against Clan na Gael on Tuesday 31st August.
The Feelystone junior team had a good win over St Michael’s in the North Junior B Championship on Sunday last in the Abbey Park. They have now qualified for the semi- final in which they will meet Kilglass.
The McGovern Directional Drilling Intermediate team will play the quarter-final of the George Bannon Sport Intermediate Championship against St Dominics on Saturday next in Tulsk at 6pm. Again, all supporters are urged to attend.
The Club will host the Garda Cup Final in the Abbey Park on Thursday at 6.30pm between Western Gaels and the winners of Elphin or Strokestown.
Club members who are interested in purchasing 2 tickets each for the All Ireland Hurling and Football Finals are asked to inform Club Secretary, Kathleen Hanmore in writing not later than 7pm on Friday evening next at 7pm. The draw will be held later that evening.
Congratulations are extended to Club player Alan Tiernan and his Bride Jenny Hanley who were married on Saturday last. The Club also extends its congratulations to Ruth Cox (daughter of Tom and Pat) on her marvellous victory in the Community Games U10 200metres National Final in Athlone on Sunday and also to Saoirse Wynne (daughter of Gary and Ann) on her 5th place finish in the U8 80metres Final.
The Club extends wishes for a speedy recovery to Tadhg Egan who has undergone surgery for a recent injury.
Sympathy is extended to the extended Hayden family on the passing of Mrs Winifred Hayden, Deerpark.

Monday 9.30pm:
The U 16 Semi-Final between Boyle and Oran will take place in Tulsk on Tuesday the 17th at 7. Whatever support could manage to go would be greatly appreciated. This is a very good side but they will have their hands full with Oran who they have met a number of times before at various times.
The Northern Junior Quarter Final v St. Michael’s takes place on Sunday the 22nd at 1 in Croghan.

County GAA Plans for Oran site:
I tried to source the following reference on the Roscommon Herald web site so that you could look it up but I wasn’t successful. Anyway the piece was; ‘Green light for ambitious GAA centre plans in Oran’. It was on page 3 of the edition of August 1oth last. It concerns the Ros. GAA plans for the development in Oran. A lot of the objections seemed to have a good deal of merit. I am pretty conservative when it comes to the financial risks of ambitious projects. Since Ros. GAA still have large debts and repayment issues I don’t see if they are in any position to take on an expensive project. The County Board got themselves into a financial mess a few years ago perhaps because GAA people were not vigilant enough. We have been paying for it through the County Board draw of the past few years. It is a great pity that the Kilbride location and possibilities for the County usage ended up wherever it did and for whatever the reasons were. Anyway I’m trying to alert those who might take an interest that the implications of this project need to be monitored closely and that people should not be reluctant to query its rationale.

Our U12s went down to a stronger Roscommon Gaels outfit in the Division 1 Championship in Hyde Park on Saturday evening last. Their next outing will be at home to St Dominic’s in the Abbey park on Sunday next at 12 noon. This will be an opportunity for this promising group of players to get back on winning ways.
The Garda Cup U 14 team had a good win over Tulsk in Tulsk on Thursday evening last. They will play Western Gaels in the semi final of this competition on this Thursday-see fixtures for details of time and venue. The U16s had a good win over Castlerea on Sunday evening. They will play Oran in the County Semi Final on this Tuesday evening-see fixtures for details.
The minors are still awaiting confirmation of their league semi final. The Feelystone Junior team had a comprehensive win over an understrength Shannon Gael team on Sunday in the Junior B North Championship. It was good to see former players like David Kelly and Karl Feighan back in the Boyle colours and doing so well. They will play St Michael’s in the quarter final in Croghan on Sunday next at 1pm.
The McGovern Directional Drilling Intermediate team lost by a one goal margin to St Brigid’s in the George Bannon Sports Intermediate Championship in Kiltoom on Saturday evening last. This was a very disappointing result and throws Boyle in with the sharks in terms of future opposition. They had already qualified for the knock-out stages of the championship, but they will need to show considerable improvement if they are to overcome St Dominic’s in the forthcoming quarterfinal which is scheduled to be played on the weekend of 28th/29th August. Abbey Park will host an Intermediate Championship Quarter Final on Saturday evening next when neighbours St Michael’s and St Ronan’s do battle at 6.45pm. All Boyle Club Members are asked to assemble at 5.30pm to take up their positions as stewards.
An open monthly Club meeting will be held in the Clubroom on this Thursday at 9pm.
Heartiest congratulations are extended to Gerard and Sandra Sheerin on the birth of a baby boy. Gerard has been a quiet and popular contributor to the club in a variety of roles over the years.
We wish Seamie Gallagher Snr, a speedy recovery after recent hip surgery.
Sympathy is extended to Pat Cox, Mockmoyne on the recent death of her father Alphonsus Murray, Killina.
Greetings to Oz, England and New York.

Ladies Club
The Sean Daly Memorial Perpetual Cup blitz was help in the Abbey park on Saturday last. Under 14 girls from Boyle, Kilmore, Western Gaels, St Ronans and Eire Og participated. Western Gaels narrowly defeated Boyle in the Final in what was a great display of football, to bring the cup back to Frenchpark/Ballinagare for a second year. Thanks is extended to all clubs, the referees and officials and the Daly family and all the U14 girls who participated and who made the day such a success. The new clubhouse proved to be an excellent facility, with culinary delights prepared and served by parents of the Boyle U14girls, whose help is greatly appreciated. The U14 Championship Division 1 will commence for the Boyle girls on Sunday next when they will host Roscommon Gaels in the Abbey park at 7pm. Full support will be appreciated. The ladies team will play Western Gaels in the County Junior A Championship on this Tuesday evening at 7pm. Again, all support will be greatly appreciated.
