Former award winners might look at the cups in their cupboards because we are missing the Henry Feely Cup which was originally donated for the Senior Player of the Year but morphed into the Clubman of the Year subsequently. It was around until very recently so I imagine it should not be too difficult to find.
The charge to get into the U 21 match on Saturday was €15. This was €5 too dear in my view. League games are just €10 which is good. I knew or was on nodding terms with about 70% of the Roscommon supporters in Carrick so really it is the hard core of activists and supporters who are being hit at these kind of matches especially. There is a resistance emerging to o.t.t. pricing now so the Connacht Council would want to take heed.
Michael Gilmartin was the lucky winner of the much coveted first prize in our Club fundraising draw, of a weekend for two in New York for the Roscommon versus New York, Connacht Senior Championship game at the May weekend. It is indeed fitting that Michael should be the winner as he has made a huge contribution in his role as Club Treasurer and subsequently to the efficient managing of the Club finances during its development projects in recent years and we wish Michael and Monica and Gareth a very enjoyable trip.
Second prize of a weekend in Kilronan Castle was won by Caroline Simon of Corrigeenroe, while the third prize of a mid-week break in the Shannon Oaks Hotel, Portumna was won by Pat Conroy, Forest View. We hope that they will also enjoy their prizes. Thanks to all ticket sellers who made the draw such a success by their trojan efforts, and thanks especially to all purchasers and to Londis and Supervalu for their help which was a great boost to sales. Also thanks to the clubs who supported us. The prizes were drawn at a very enjoyable and well attended function in our new Clubhouse and the tickets were drawn by County Board Vice Chairperson, Seamus Sweeney, a former Boyle player. Seamus also presented medals to the successful Division 4 Feelystone team of 2010. The following Player of the Year awards were also presented;-U21-Michael O'Donnell. Junior Footballer -John Healy, Senior Footballer-Aaron O'Connor. The Club Person of the Year was awarded to Bernard Shannon and the Hall of Fame went to long time Club stalwart Pat Clarke who holds All Ireland medals in U21 football (1966) and in handball, as well as having held various officer positions in the Club and with the County Handball Board down the years. The recipients responded with applomb on receiving their awards. The M.C. was Tony Conboy and to the officers and those involved in organising the event.
The following were €20 winners at the most recent Club Lotto draw which was held in Mattimoes;-Gerry Carty, Olive and John Filan, Vincent McDonagh, John and Angela Gannon, Marian McGovern, Pat Nicholson, Vincent Brady, Emer and Ruth Kelly, Joe Rooney and Karl Cuffe. The house prize was won by James Sharkey. There was no jackpot winner and a jackpot of €3,000 will be on offer for this week's draw which will be held on Saturday night next in the Patrick's Well. Aidan Lavin's team will be in charge.
It was a successful weekend on the playing fields. The minors had a good win over St Brigid’s in the Division 1 League in Kiltoom on Friday night. They will entertain Padraig Pearses in the Abbey Park on Sunday next. The U16s’ defeated Padraig Pearses in the Abbey Park on Sunday in the Division 1A League by the score of 2.10 to 1.7. This is a good side. Hopefully goalkeeper Kuba will recover from a foot injury.
The Cooney Motors/ Cooney’s Centra team had a hard earned win over Western Gaels in an entertaining game which produced a good deal of good football. This was in the Tansey Cup at home on Sunday. The score was Boyle 8 to 6 at half time and Boyle stayed in the lead ending 14 to 11 victors. Good wishes for a speedy recovery is extended to Jonathan McDermott who suffered an injury on Sunday. The McGovern Directional Drilling senior team will travel to Frenchpark next weekend to take on Western Gaels in their second O'Rourke Cup game of the season.
The Club congratulates Paddy Mulvey of Shannon Gaels on being honoured with his Gradaim an Uachtarain Award in Dublin last week. Well done to St Brigid's who, although not winning, did us proud in Croke Park on St Patrick's Day. The Club extends its sympathy to the Brogan family, Boyle, on the passing of Mrs Mary Brogan.
Well done to Roscommon teams over the week-end. I think the minors drew with Mayo (?); the U 21s’ pulled away from Leitrim in the second half and now meet Galway in the Connacht Final in this Cadbury sponsored tournament. The seniors dug out a good win against Clare in Ennis. They have a big game again next Sunday in Aughrim, Wicklow. A win there would almost certainly mean promotion thought there are two games to come against Kilkenny and Leitrim. Then it is off to New York!

Wed. 2.32. I’ve been away a couple of days, hence the delay. There is an amount of material to deal with so ‘put the kettle on’. A happy St. Patrick’s Day to all in England/the U.S./Canada/ and Oz and abroad generally. Hillary Beirne of Kilbryan (well signed, out the Carrick Road) is one of the prime movers in the New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
1. Re. the St. Patrick’s Day parade; if anyone reading this has a float please let me know in five lines or so, by email or on a card tomorrow, the thrust of the float as I need the info. as M.C. Has the GAA club an entry? There are good prizes and so on. There is plenty of topical material this year. I presume St. Ming will be very evident. Floats from Ballinafad and Carrick-on-Shannon are encouraged to return to the later parade in Boyle. (Maybe it will be an opportunity to complete some New York ticket sales. If anyone is still interested in New York tickets they can call me on 086 816 33 99).
2. I have been asked to ask trainers and players NOT to use the main pitch in the coming days. There are 3 games there on Sunday. A lot of damage, which can take a long time to recover, can be done by overuse at this time of year when the weather is poor and the days not long enough to cause sufficient drying.
3. Saturday night is presentation night in the clubroom. There will be a presentation of medals to the juniors, Club-Person of the Year and the Hall of Fame award. Saturday night's function will also include the presentation of the North Division 4 winner’s medals for 2010 to the successful panel of players as well as Player of the Year at Intermediate levels and so on.
4.
I wish to thank all who supported the quiz on Friday night last in the Moylurg Inn as a fundraiser to assist the GAA community in Brisbane whose club faciliities were destroyed in the January flooding. Also I thank Martin Purcell and Sabrina at Purcell Print. (I believe that one of the real successes there is the publication of Memoriam Cards. So….). Many thanks to the correctors Aidan, Kathleen, Mary, Conor, Ml. and A.N.Other for their help. They, as I always say, do Trojan work for he club on all fronts. Also thanks to Ml. Brennnan, Tommy Egan, the media, Ros. Herald/People and realboyle. The final word to Kevin and Aaron of the Moylurg who made every effort and with whom I was most impressed by their help, approach and attitude. Good luck to them in their enterprise at the Moylurg. I suppose anyone who missed the quiz may, if they wish, make a donation!
5. Plans are at an advanced stage for the holding of the Club's monster draw on Saturday night next 19th March in the Clubroom at 9pm. All who have been allocated tickets are asked to make one final push to complete their sales and to return the counterfoils and the proceeds to the Clubroom where there will be a special "ticket sales" meeting on Friday night at 8pm. Thanks to all the hardy souls who manned the ticket sales stands at Londis and Supervalu on Saturday last, and thanks also to Neil Kennedy of Londis and to Shane Kelly of Supervalu for their co-operation. To see Liam Conroy at the ticket sales table at Londis early on Saturday morning was both inspirational and intimidating. This draw has used up a lot of the energy of the main coordinators.
6. Junior and Under 21 for 2011. The Cooney Motors/Centra team lost to Kilglass Gaels in the League in the Abbey Park on Sunday last. They will host Western Gaels in the Abbey Park in their next outing on Sunday next at 2pm.
7. The minor team's scheduled game with St Brigids didn't go ahead on Sunday last and it has been re-scheduled for Kiltoom on this Friday night under lights. The U16s will play Padraig Pearses on Sunday next at 12 noon in the Abbey Park.
8. Well done to the Roscommon U21 and senior teams which both had successful outings at the weekend. Good wishes are extended to St Brigid’s as they take on Crossmaglen Rangers in the All Ireland Club Final on St Patrick's Day in Croke Park and we are confident that they will be returning with the Andy Merrigan Cup.
9. Saturday next is a huge day of sport with Roscommon U 21 v Leitrim at Ck.-on-Sh. I believe, and the county minors also in action and on Sunday the seniors take on Clare in Ennis. (And Big Bang Casey’s fight on Sat. night). Ireland was beaten by the Windies and South Africa and so have just one more game v Netherlands in the World Cup. They did well.
10. Lotto: There was no Jackpot on Saturday night from Mattimoe’s. The numbers drawn were 6/8/18/27. The €20 winners were: Gerry Carty; John and Olive Filan/ Vincent McDonagh/John and Anglea Gannon/ Marian McGowan/ Pat Nicholson/ Vincent Brady/ Emer and Ruth Kelly/Joe Rooney/Karl Cuffe. The House Prize was won by James Sharkey. The next draw will take place in the Patrick’s Well with team ‘A’. The Jackpot will be €3,000.
11. Congratulations to Paddy Mulvey who gets the GAA President’s Award this Wed. evening in Croke Park. Paddy has been part of the GAA landscape here in Roscommon, and especially in the North of the county, for decades. One memorable image that springs to mind is a confrontation between Paddy with the gallowses straining and Dessie in front of the goals in the Abbey Park goals. Nothing for U tube I’m afraid. We congratulate him and wish him well. I've just spotted that this event is covered on TG4 this evening Wed. from 10.15 so Paddy and co. should feature there.
12.
Boyle Ladies Club;
Boyle U16 girls secured their third consecutive victory on Sunday last when they survived a strong challenge from Michael Glavey's on a scoreline of 6. 7 to 5. 6. They will entertain St Dominic’s on Sunday next at 3.30pm in the Abbey Park. Boyle junior ladies will have their first outing of the season on Sunday next when they will take on Ballinameen in Ballinameen. The U12s will train on Monday and Friday evenings from 6pm to 7pm.

Quiz tonight at 9.47.
This is a big week end for sport. There is rugby, cricket and a host of GAA games.
Boyle Minors v S. Brigid's on Sat. Boyle Juniors v Kilglass on Sun. at 2.30 oddly considering that Roscommon v Fermanagh at Kiltoom at 2.30. Then you have Boyle Ladies v Ml. Glavey's, I presume away. There are three attractive games tomorrow Saturday: Roscommon C.B.S. v Marymount, Ck.-on-Shannon at Elphin at 12.30 in the Connacht Colleges 'B'Final and St. Jarlath's v Summerhill in the 'A' final at the Hyde at 2.30 I think. Ir. v Wales on Sat. also, away. As I write Friday 11.50 Ireland are playing the West Indies in the cricket. Thye've lost!!
We of course all wish St. Brigid's well on St. Patrick's Day v Crossmaglen. It has come to my notice that there will be a Boyle connection involved in the club All-Ireland on St Patrick's Day.
Rían Callaghan, daughter of former Boyle player Kevin and grandaughter of Western Gaels legend Tom Callaghan x Boyle Vocational school, Rian will play on a St Brigid's U-12 mixed team to face Crossmaglen at half time in the Senior game.
Anyone with tickets with the prize for the New York game are asked to put in the push in the next few days. The draw will take place at a presentation night on Saturday the 19th in the clubrooms where 'The Hall of Fame' and 'Club Person of the Year' plus other presentations will be made.
I don't know if the club is having a float in the St. Patrick's Day parade but hopefully. There are plenty of material for loats and ideas this year one imagines.

Mon. 1.30am.
The U16s’ are due to meet Padraig Pearses in Boyle on 20th March in their next outing while the seniors will next be in action against Western Gaels in Frenchpark on 27th March.
Lotto:The following were €20 winners at the most recent Club Lotto draw which was held in Wynne’s Bar;- Tommy and Monica King, Joe O’Donnell, Vincent Flanagan, T.P. Toolan, Mary and Cathal McGee, Ciaran O’Neill, Tanya Brennan, Ronan Smith, Michael Harrington AND Brian O’Flaherty. The house prize was won by Fiona Beirne. The jackpot wasn’t won and a jackpot of €2,900 will carry forward to the next draw which will be held on Saturday night next in Mattimoe’s with Pat Goldrick’s team in charge.
A further Club meeting will be held in the Clubroom on this Friday night at 8pm to monitor progress with sales of tickets for the forthcoming Club fundraising draw, for which the first prize is a very attractive 4 day trip for 2 to New York to coincide with the Roscommon versus New York Connacht Championship game on 1st May. All who have been allocated tickets are requested to attend with sales proceeds and any unsold tickets. It is essential that there is a concentrated sales effort in the coming week and that everyone is available to give a progress report on the night.
Thanks to those who represented the Club in the Scór County Finals in Ballinaheglish on Saturday night last. The Club extends its best wishes to recent Scór na nOg participant Karen Carty who will be representing Abbey Community College in the “Our School’s Got Talent” Connacht Finals in Castlebar on 16th March. Congratulations to our latest All Ireland medallist, Donal Smith who was a member of the DCU Freshers team which won the National title last week. Well done also to Club members Darren O’Connor and Jim Suffin who acquitted themselves with distinction in the boxing tournament which was held in Boyle at the weekend.
Next weekend’s football action will see the minors travel to Kiltoom to take on St. Brigids in the Division 1 League while the Cooney Motors/ Cooney Centra junior team will travel to Kilglass to take on the home team in the Tansey Cup-see fixtures for full details of both games.
The Club encourages all GAA and quiz enthusiasts to support a special table quiz in the Moylurg Inn on Friday night next in aid of Brisbane GAA whose playing facilities were destroyed by the recent floods. This is in response to an appeal by Killaraght native Ciaran Conlon who is actively involved with the GAA there. Finally, the Club extend good wishes for a speedy recovery to former Club star Richard Fitzpatrick who was recently involved in a traffic accident and to minor stalwart, Eoin Lavin, who was injured while playing for Abbey Community College last week.
The Connacht Colleges senior 'A' football final will takes place on Saturday the 12th in Hyde Park where Summerhill take on St. Jarlath’s. Games at this and further levels often provide really fine exhibitions of football.
(Since there is so much content here I will postpone a simpler outline of the rules et al of cricket until a few days hence. There have been a number of requests for same as the outline posted on Sat. last was thought a little confusing.)
Boyle Ladies Club.
The U16s’ had a 6.8 to 2.6 win over Kilmore in the Abbey Park on Sunday in a very entertaining encounter. Obviously Boyle turned in a very good second half performance as the sides were level at half time. Their next outing will be in Ballinlough versus Michael Glavey’s on Sunday next.

Sat. 11.15pm.
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!
ntdwa really: I happened to spot a Marian Harkin on T.V. this evening. Do these Euro MEPs do the old squirrel thing because they seem to disappear for long traunches of time? A regular question of mine-in quizes-is to ask participants to name one (for MENSA people 2!)Connacht/ Ulster M.E.P. Another question....have these MEPs any input into the Irish European debt queries....or do they just meet in Dumbawumba Never Never Land?
Thursday week March 17th (!) is St. Patrick's Day. Just flagging it. I hope floats etc in Ballinafad and Carrick et al are encouraged to participate in Boyle. There should be a good few political floats this year with the Ming Dynasty to the fore.
Junior Minister of Transport Angela Mitchell O'Connor who drives down (4 not 5)steps. I thought I'd see Michael Kane close by a mini in a remake of 'The German Job'.
