An understrength U16 panel participated in a very enjoyable 9-a-side blitz in Kilbride on Saturday last and won a number of games to reach the final in which they lost to Oran.

Clifford Haulage and Calor Gas presented a fine set of kit bags to the U16 panel on Tuesday night in the Clubrooms. Hopefully I'll have a pic. here when my Secretary and technical support has time.

The U16s’ finished the 2010 competitive season on a high with a 1.14 to 1.6 victory over Tulsk in the Ahern Cup Final in Abbey Park on Sunday. Boyle dominated the first half and led on the score of Boyle 1.9 Tulsk 0.2. Tulsk made a much better fight in the second half but Boyle were never really in any great danger. The Boyle team was; J.McDermott, L.Brennan, B. Furey, P.Nally, j. Sweeney, T. Mckenna (Capt.), D. Mattimoe, J. Nally, E, Smith, Ml. Lavin, E. McGrath, C.Goldrick, C. Tivnan, E. Lavin, D. East with J.Regan, D. Boylan, J. Morris, S. Filan, P. Godrick. The Club made it three wins on a row in this competition which is played by teams in the North Western Board area for a trophy in memory of former Boyle player, the late Rory Ahern. The cup was donated by the Ahern family. It was presented to the Boyle captain, Tadhg McKenna, by Fr. Niall Ahern, brother of Rory, in the presence of Rory's neices Aisling and Grainne. One remembers also Fergus ahern who presented the cup on Boyle’s first win. Thanks to the U16 panel which had a very successful year, giving many memorable displays of fine football, having already won the County Division 1 League, and to their management of Jonathan Conroy, Gary Goldrick and Gareth Doyle. The Club's Minor Board will hold its AGM on 2nd December in the Clubroom. It will hold its presentation night for underage players on 7th January in St Joseph's Hall.

The Club extends its sympathy to the Devaney family, Faus, Croghan.
Well done to former GAA stars Lorcan Egan and Adrian King who were prominent in the Boyle Musical.

Tomorrow sees the last of game of the season with the U 16s’ taking on Tulsk in the Ahern Cup final at 1 in the A.P. So try and get there with your support.

The Minor Board AGM takes place on Thursday December the 2nd, so if have a contribution or a say take that on board.
The County Board AGM is on Sat. Dec. 18th. One of the items I feel that really needs a study here are the finances and the proposed development in Oran. It seems to me that he County is struggling to clear debts at this time and it doesn’t seem logical to me to initiate a major new development at this time. Indeed if any remedial work was to be done Hyde Park in terms of toilets and general upkeep is in a sorry enough state. This year Roscommon Co. board sees the end of Ml. McGuire’s five year term as Chairman. I believe that, despite some inevitable perhaps petty niggles, that he will be considered among the finest Chairmen that we are lucky to have had. One has to bear in mind the position that existed when he took office and the various issues particularly of his earlier years.
The Minor Presentation Night is on Friday Jan. 7th.

Christmas Quiz Wed. Dec. 29th.

The Senior AGM is in January, provisionally Monday Jan17th. (Ladies AGM dates to come).

One of the major issues we have ourselves is that we need to tackle our own debt in 2011 and to do that we need innovative ideas. If anyone has such an idea (preferably outside the box idea) let the exec. hear it. One idea that has been discussed is a fund-raising walk to Croke Park ending up there on All-Ireland football day. Kilglass did this very successfully spearheaded by my friend Seamus Nugent. I include a missive from the Club Treasurer on the idea:

The road to Croker idea came to my mind as an effort to lower the Club's indebtedness on the new club rooms. Having been involved in the project at all stages, I am conscious that before I leave office, that repayment of the loan wouldn't be a huge millstone around the neck of new officers. I would see the 'Road' to Croker’ being divided into different stages with different members walking the various stages. Contact would be made with all the GAA clubs en route to elicit their support. I believe this project could have both a fun and team building dimension for the club and of course net funds (Think Kingless). Most importantly, all Club members have to take ownership of the concept if it is to be a success.

We would like your club to ensure that for 2011 that all your underage coaches and everyone involved with your teams in any capacity in both football and hurling need to have the foundation course done and we would like at least one person from your club or more to undertake the Award 1 youth, Adult and child courses as well. We have our programme of courses ready for 2011 and looking forward to working with your coaches. It is very important for your club that all coaches have a foundation qualification.

P.S./T.C. if you (readers) have got down to here, I have been watching some of the Ireland v Samoa rugby match (over my shoulder as I write this) and the crowd or lack of it shows that in these times people will react if you try to be too smart in terms of charges etc. Also there is the prominence of the Guinness advertising. Last week v South Africa the ball even was emblazoned with the name of Guinness which I thought was o.t.t. The whole idea of things like Arthur’s Day etc. is a pure con.

Boyle's U16s’ received a walkover in the Ahern Cup semi-final on Sunday. They will meet Tulsk in the final of this competition on Sunday next at 1pm in Abbey Park. Supporters are asked to come to cheer the boys along in what is likely to be the last match of the year for the Club. The U16s’ had a very enjoyable outing to Bundoran Adventure World recently. Thanks to Jonathan Conroy for arranging the outing and to Garreth Doyle, Colette Collins, Majella Hynes and Keith Condron for their generous support of the outing. It is deeply appreciated.
The Club participated in three events in Scór na nOg in Elphin on Friday night last. Karen Carty in solo singing, Conor Tivnan, Jack and Caoimhe Morris in instrumental music qualified for the county semi finals which will be held in two weeks time. The quiz team of Eoin Lavin, Enda Smith and Conor Tivnan missed out on qualification.

Congratulations to our Club and County President John Joe Nerney on being inducted into the County GAA Hall of Fame on Friday night last at the Awards night in the Abbey Hotel. John Joe was also feted at the launch of the St. Dominick’s GAA History in Lecarrow on Saturday night by Liam Gilmartin and Gerry O’Malley.
Dates for your diary; - The minor board AGM will be held in the Clubhouse on 2nd December at 8pm. All parents in particular are asked to come along and see for themselves the work that is being done for the many underage teams which represent the Club. I attended Barry Feely’s Book launch on Friday night and there was a very nice introduction by Brian Leyden a writer from Arigna now living in Leitrim. I have always enjoyed Brian’s talks which as here was introducing a book or paying the funeral tribute to Willie Conlon. Brian has a number of publication including The Home Place and Departures. So do look up Brian’s work on Google and you will not be disappointed. Barry himself was in great form at the launch and a large crowd was present. The book and CD are in a very attractive format with some lovely photographs of Canon Dodd, Johnny Keaveney and Noel Derby a painting reproduction of Sonny Regan. Also there are extensive drawings by Paul Young of ‘Secret of Kells’ fame. So along with the stories there is a mix of other artistic features also on show.
Barry is a lifelong activist and supporter and currently Vice-President of Boyle GAA Club.

Another book launch I attended recently was that produced by a family friend Conor McMorrow who is a political correspondent with the Sunday Tribune. The title of the book is ‘Dail Stars’ which tells the story of former GAA footballers who got to the Dail with the help of their GAA reputations. Currently there are John O’Mahoney, Jimmy Deenihan and Sean Kelly M.E.P. The Roscommon man chosen was Jack McQuillan, who was one of three, the others being Dr. Hugh Gibbons and Dan O’Rourke. So if you want a mix of politics and GAA you should find it here.

The U16s had a hard earned 1 point win over Western Gaels on a 1. 9 to 0.11 scoreline in the Ahern Cup quarter- final which was played in ideal conditions in the Abbey Park on Sunday. They will play St. Michael’s in Cootehall on Sunday next in the semi-final of this competition -see fixtures for details. The U 16s' go on an outing this Saturday after a long season.
The Minor Club will hold a meeting in the Clubroom on this Tuesday night at 9pm while the Senior Club will hold a meeting, also in the Clubroom, on Thursday night at 8.30pm.

Roscommon Supporters Club holds a function in Roscommon on Friday night where they will honour Boyle’s John Joe Nerney with induction into its Hall of Fame.
St. Dominick’s will launch their Club History on Saturday night in the Lecarrow Community Centre. With the material the have it should be an interesting and valuable resource.
Ntdwgaa: Recently I visited Carrick-on-Shannon swimming pool or Aura Leisure Centre and resolve to be a regular! Swimming is one of the great fitness/health activities and I can’t recommend it highly enough ph. 071 9662187.
I see there is a growing mood for retaining summer time i.e. not switching the clocks back at the end of October and I would be a supporter of that. I was told that an M.P. in England is pushing a ’Private Member’s Bill’ to that end. I hope it makes progress.
A friend told me of seeing some odd activity and wondering if he would report it to the Gardai. He eventually did whether it was of any help or if his interpretation was right or not he doesn’t know. He felt that if he had the Garda station number in his phone he would be able to report it as he was witnessing it. In these times might it be an idea to have the local Garda station number in ones phone?
I attended the Compromise Rules game on Sat. evening in Croke Park. While the game itself was harmless enough the production, atmosphere and location were great and I was glad I went. It is a great place on a good evening under lights and I hope there is an extension of its ‘under lights’ GAA events.

Friday 10.40pm. It was great to see that Kilglass won their prize in the Kellogs promotion. Thanks to anyone who voted for them on my request. That is the second winner after John Hume.

I have just received an email from the Club Sec. saying that he has circulated a form re. nominations and motions for above with a possible meeting on Monday the 1st as details are to be with the County Board by Wed. the 3rd.

Mon. It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for two Boyle teams who were in action against Elphin. The U16s' had a hard earned one point victory-scoreline Boyle 1.12, Elphin 2. 8, in the first round of the Ahern Cup, in the Orchard Park on Saturday last. They will entertain Western Gaels in the quarter final of this competition on Sunday next at 12.30pm in the Abbey Park. While I am a great admirer of the team I feel that they will have to up their game v Western Gaels who I’m told are a pretty good side. This I think is the last on-field action of the season.

The U21s' bowed out of this year’s championship with a defeat to Elphin in an excellent game of football in Croghan on Saturday evening. The half-time score was Elphin 3.1 Boyle 1.5. The final score was Elphin 4.9 Boyle 2.9. I was really impressed by the commitment and football of the side against what I expect is a good Elphin side. While there were good performances from the usual suspects the people who really impressed me were a group who haven’t played much Gaelic football in recent years i.e. Tomas Conroy, Shane Battles, Colin Brennan and Jim Suffin. As the Gospel says- approximately- ‘There is more joy in heaven (should that be a capital H?) for the lost person who returns’. Thanks to the management of Gary, David and Bernie and the entire panel for their committment throughout the season. The Club wishes Elphin –a club I have good time for- the best of luck in the remaining stages of the championship.

It is great to see the development of the pitch at St. Joseph’s Boys School. The school will have a range of facilities second to none when this development matures. I don’t know the management committee but they are certainly doing a great at getting the funding for all the developments at the school.

The Feelystone junior team fell at the final hurdle on Sunday in Castlerea when they went down to a four point defeat to St Faithleach’s in the County Junior ‘B’ Final. While this team has had a number of very good performances this season this wasn’t one of them. Though Boyle started well and went into a four point to nil lead they lost their way subsequently with a good goal chance going a begging and at half time the scores were level at 4 points each. Things started evenly enough in the second half were another missed goal chance led to a leak of confidence. and St. Faithleach’s gradually took control taking the last five points to win by 10 points to 6. Well done to the management of David O'Connor, Bernie Shannon and Paul Beirne and the entire panel for their committment throughout the year. The U 21s’ secured a hard earned draw with Castlerea in the Division 1 Championship in Abbey Park on Saturday evening last. This means that their final group game against Elphin on Saturday next at Frenchpark at 5pm is a "must-win" match and scoring differences may become a factor.
The U16s’ will play their Ahern Cup game against Elphin as a curtain-raiser to the U 21 game-see fixtures for starting time.
Well done to all three Roscommon teams on their successes in the Connacht Club Championships on Sunday.
