Sun. 10.57pm. The following were €20 winners at the most recent Club Lotto draw which was held in the Moylurg Inn; Paul and Anita Kearney, Brian Supple, Dessie McLoughlin, Lorcan Egan, Aiden Sheerin, Sinead Cummins, Suzanne McTiernan, Padraig McGivney, Enda Commons and A. Wheeler. The house prize was won by Tomas Cooney. There was no jackpot winner and a jackpot of €3,500 will be on offer for this week's draw which will be held in Dodd’s on Saturday night next. Team ‘A’ will be in charge. There was mixed results for our adult teams during the week.

The Cooney Motors/ Cooney's Centra junior team, sporting their new jersies, had a good win over Kilbride in Kilbride on Wednesday night last in the Tansey Cup. They will have a few weeks to await their next outing in this competition. The McGovern Directional Drilling team went down to Elphin in their O'Rourke Cup meeting in the Orchard Park on Sunday. The score was Elphin 2.9 Boyle 1.7. (I was not able to go to this game so I’ll have to wait until reports drift in. They will make the long trip to Woodmount on Sunday next to take on Padraig Pearse's in the next round of this competition at 2pm. while Elphin would have been regarded as pretty firm favourites today (as county finalists last Autumn) Pearse's should be a more even bet.
The U16s’ and the National Automation minors will have no activity until after the completion of the State examinations. Well done to those who have received third level exam results’ already. The U14s’ will host St Brigid’s on Friday next in the Abbey Park at 7pm while the U12s’ will travel to Kiltoom on Sunday next to take on St Brigid’s at 11.30am.
There will be a photoshoot for our various sponsors in the Clubroom on this Tuesday evening at 7.45pm. A club meeting will take place in the clubroom (perhaps we get a finer title for this venue) on Wednesday evening at 8.30 to consider the making of arrangements for the forthcoming senior and intermediate championship double header which the Club will host on Saturday the 18th of June-all members are requested to attend. Boyle play St. Michael’s on that evening at 5.30.
All users of the Abbey Park are reminded that it is a litter free zone and those in charge of teams should ensure that all plastic bottles are collected, emptied and placed in the recepticles that are provided, before leaving the grounds. (Plastic bottles could be emptied of their contents. I (T.C.) ask people to be a bit more discerning re. what goes in ‘recyclables’ and ‘rubbish’ bins).
Congratulations are extended to Breege and Conor McGowan on the birth of their baby daughter and to Ann and Peter Gavigan on the birth of their baby son. Sympathy is extended to the Lavin familiies, Ballymore and Boyle on recent bereavements.

Boyle Ladies Club;
The Junior Ladies drew with Tulsk in the first round of the County Championship at a wet and windy Tulsk on Friday evening last. Best wishes are extended to our U14 girls who will play Clan na Gael in the County Championship Quarter Final on this Wednesday evening in Johnstown. Support will be appreciated in this important game. The U14 girls continue their training every Wednesday and Friday. Congratulations to the Roscommon U14 girls who won the All Ireland 1B Semi Final against Meath on Sunday last. They will meet Tipperary in the All Ireland Final. Boyle connections include panelists Melissa Goldrick, Sarah Halligan, Melissa Mattimore and Sinead Meehan and team manager Pat Leonard.

Fri. 5pm
I was in the crowd at the Junior league game v Kilbride on Wed. evening in Kilbride. it was a mixed but overall good performance. The final score was Boyle 1.9 Kilbride 1.6. At half time Kilbride led by 0.4 to 0.3. Boyle were playing against the breeze and got off to a good start but got mixed up. An unfortunate, almost slow motion, clash between Cian Beirne and Brendan McQuaid led to Cian sustaining an injury which led to his replacement and perhaps unavailability for a while. I hope he recovers quickly as like Jonathan McDermott has had his share of injury recently. The switch od Ciaran O'Neill to the half back line, plus his free taking, was instruementl in an improved second half when Boyle were held out by the varied woodwork of uprights and crossbars and so on. A Brendan McQuaid goal on 25 minutes of the second half secured victory. Ml. Birmingham too shipped a heavy tackle in that second half. The veteran but irrepressible Noel McKenna finished on a high note with a fine point.
The Boyle team was: Ciaran Beirne (very good kick outs), Ml. Birmingham, J.S.Lyons, Ml. Hanmore, Ml. O'Donnell, C. Beirne, B. McQuaid (1.1), D. Callaghan, S. Tonra, J.Suffin, N. McKenna (0.1), C. O'Neill (0.3 fr), C. Garvin, D.O'Connor (0.1), M. O'Donohoe (0.2) with B. Furey and Sh. Spellman (0.1) and A.N.Other. Shane Spellman showed he hadn't forgotten the scoring touch. The young men Furey and Ml. Hanmore played very well. David Callaghan was an intersting switch to full back and showed a nice delicate dummy touch in the second half.
Early season eligibility for the junior team is always a serious consideration.

While I know that Boyle are in C'Ship action on Sunday the 19th of June there is a very interesting charity walk/run/hike called the 'Curlew Warrior Challenge' on that day at 11am. so anyone not directly involved in the afternoon should consider that.

Today Tuesday the 24this the 70th birthday of Bob Zimmerman. I have been a devotee for decades. John Creedon is having, what should be, a good tribute programme on R.T.E. Radio 1 at 8.30 this evening.
Roscommon U14 County girls play Meath in the All Ireland B Championship, Semi-Final, next Sunday 29 May, in 'The Down’s', Co. Westmeath, throw in at 4.30pm. Good luck to the panel and in particular the Boyle players, Melissa Goldrick, Sarah Halligan, Melissa Mattimoe and Sinead Meehan, and Pat Leonard the Manager. (And so all of us. T.C.)

Mon. 0.04am
It was a week of mixed results for the Club.
Our U12s Division 1 team lost to Padraig Pearses while the Division 4 team beat the same opposition in the Abbey Park on Sunday. They will host Castlerea in the Division 1 league on Sunday next while the Division 4 team will face St Failes-details to be confirmed.
The U 14s’ lost to Clan na Gael on Thursday evening last. It is expected that they will have a game against St Dominick’s on this Thursday evening-see fixtures.
The U16s and the National Automation minor teams have a break in competition until after the leaving and junior cert exams.

The McGovern Directional Drilling Intermediate team had a hard earned but deserved win, Boyle 2.6 over Eire Og 1.6.in their excellent grounds on Sunday in the second round of the George Bannon Sports Intermediate Championship. This is their second win in this competition and it leaves them well placed to make the knock-out stages. They have, however,a tough local derby remaining when they will face St. Michael’s in the Abbey Park on 19th June. They will be in action again on Sunday next when they take on Elphin in the Orchard Park in the O'Rourke Cup at 3pm. Boyle started in great style with flowing movements and good scores. It seemed as if they would overwhelm the opposition as they sped into an early of 1.3 to 0.1 after 9 minutes or so. However Eire Og adjusted their tactics effectively and at half time the score stood at Boyle 1.5 Eire Og 1.3. Boyle went a lengthy period of the half, from the 11th to the 28th minute without a score. The early period of the second half saw a good number of wides from Eire Og as Boyle struggled to recover its early rhythm. There were few scores in the half but Darren O’Connor added his goal with a fine intervention on 21 minutes. The introduction of Aaron O’Connor steadied the ship in the last ten minutes or so and Boyle were worthy winners but have things to work on going forward. This leaves Boyle with 4 points from their two games; Eire Og and St. Dominick’s 2 each and St. Michael’s, Boyle’s next opponents, in bother with no points. Boyle return to the important issue of the O’Rourke Cup league v Elphin on Sunday next. Also there is the important Junior game of this Wednesday night v Kilbride. It will be interesting to see what resources or backup exists here for the bench or so in the Senior League/Intermediate C’Ship. The team: T. Lowe, Ml.O’Donnell, J. Lyons, A. Sharkey, C. Beirne, M. O’Connor (0.2), S.Purcell, S. Tonra, C. Cox, K. McLoughlin, C. Smith, D. Callaghan (0.1), J. Suffin, D. O’Connor (2.1), M.O’Donohoe (0.2) with C. O’Neill and A. O’Connor. You can log onto Roscommon GAA’s web site for up-to-the-minute results
The Cooney Motors/ Cooney's Centra junior team will travel to Kilbride on this Wednesday evening to take on the home side in the Tansey Cup at 8pm.
There will be a special presentation evening to recognise our valued Club sponsors in the Clubroom on Tuesday next 31st May at 8pm. The Secretary will be in contact with all concerned.
The Club extends it sympathy with the Feely family, Greatmeadow on the sad passing, in Manchester, of Michael Feely, brother of our Club Vice President, Barry and uncle to players Aaron and Mark O’Connor. Sympathy is also extended to the McHugh and Beirne families, Strokestown and Tulsk on the death of Rita McHugh. They were both included in a minutes silence which was observed at our Intermediate Championship game in Loughglynn on Sunday.
The Club wishes to express its appreciation of the FAS Rural Social Scheme under the leadership of Gerard Tivnan on the ongoing excellent work that they are doing for the Club. The old dressing rooms and the stand are the latest to benefit from their expertise.
Congratulations are also extended to former star under age player and county minor goalkeeper Chris O'Dowd who continues to distinguish himself in the film world. It is difficult to say what influence his time in the Abbey (park) had on his fledgling career. Anyway we are of course proud of his progress and watch its ascendancy with interest.
The idea of the heavy metal collection is still in some peoples’ minds if only there was someone to head it up. Consider that St. Michael’s are said to have garnered over €40,000 from the project there.(T.C.)
Anything on the European day promoted by Boyle GAA?
Welcome to Boyle for a former club stalwart of the 50s’ early sixties before he went to New York, Austin Beisty.
I have little or no communication from our extended constituency in far flung lands.
Boyle Ladies Club

They will continue training every Wednesday and Friday evening at the usual times. The Junior Ladies first round championship game versus Tulsk which was due to have been played on Sunday was postponed as a mark of respect to the late Rita McHugh, who has strong connections with the Tulsk Club. Boyle Ladies Club expresses its sincere sympathy to the McHugh and Beirne families. No date has been confirmed for the re-fixing of this game. Sat. 2pm.
The second big game for the Intermediate team is tomorrow at 1 in Loughglynn v Eire Og. A win here should set the team up for the knock out stages of the Intermediate C'Ship. So if you can support the team tomorrow please do so.
At 11.30 the U 12s' have a game v Pearses in Boyle followed by the second U 12 team. Again there is a clash of times. I suppose this is inevitable with so many games scheduled.
I hear good news of Jonathan McDermott's injury prognosis. Congratulations to Peter and Ann Gavigan on the birth of a baby boy.
Cootehall at 4 Sun. St. Mls. V St. Dominick's. A real game option tomorrow is Western Gaesl v St. Brigid's in Frenchpark at 6.30.
I hear Liam Conroy has taken up golf......that presents interesting and scarey images!

The National Automation minor team will also be out of action until after the exams.
The McGovern Directional Drilling Intermediate team had a good win against a strong St Dominick’s side in the first round of the Intermediate Championship on Sunday in Elphin. This was a good team performance and it will need to be repeated on Sunday next as they travel to Loughglynn to play Eire Og in the next round of the championship at 1pm. Eire Og will be coming off a victory over St Michael’s so they won't lack confidence.
The Club wishes to express its gratitude to Aaron Sharkey and Kevin Tiernan of the Moylurg Inn for their generous sponsorship of polo shirts for the senior panel. Congratulations to Barry Greaney and Aaron O'Connor and the Abbey Community College panel which won the Connacht Colleges Junior title with an excellent victory over Strokestown in the final in Elphin on Friday last. They had beaten Foxford Community School in the semi final of this competition on the previous Friday.
The Club extends its sympathy to Danny Burke, Castlerea on the recent death of his brother.

Mon. 12.01pm.
The McGovern Directional Drilling team commences its 2011 Intermediate Championship campaign in the Abbey Park, Elphin on Sunday next at 1pm when they face St Dominick’s. The Club asks all its loyal supporters to travel to Elphin to get behind the lads. Best wishes to the players and the management. Every year Boyle starts off as serious contenders for the Intermediate C’Ship. I believe that, with the young talent emerging, Boyle should be a force at the high levels for the next decade. Whether that begins on Sunday is the challenge. They have prepared well and have some good results from the Senior League but St. Dominick’s are always a difficult side and are recent Intermediate champions. It seems a pit that there are so many under-age fixtures clashing (below) with this important senior fixture but I suppose that is almost inevitable. It will engage people who would certainly have gone to Elphin.
The U12 teams lost both of their Division 1 and Division 4 league games to Roscommon Gaels in Lisnamult on Sunday. Both teams are scheduled for action again on Sunday next when they make the long and early journey to Knockcroghery to play St Dominick’s. Their games are at 11.30am and at 12.45pm.
The U14s’ had a good win over Strokestown on Thursday. They will play St Ciaran’s in Fuerty on this Thursday at 7pm.
The U16s’ will play Castlerea on Sunday next at 3.30 in the Abbey Park in the League semi-final. Support is requested for this important game.
The minors beat Roscommon Gaels on Sunday week last but they lost to Castlerea on Sunday in the Division 1 League. Theyy will have no further outings until after the completion of the Leaving and Junior Cert exams.
The Club extends its good wishes for a speedy recovery to two prominent underage players Patrick Goldrick and Conor Tivnan who suffered injuries in the past week.

The Cooney Motors/ Cooneys Centra junior team is still awaiting news of its next fixture. Well done to Cian Smith who was our only representative on the Roascommon Juniors who lost out narrowly to Mayo in the Connacht Championship on Friday evening last.
The Club extends its sympathy to the Smith Family on the death of George Smith in Birr, and to the Cox and Mulhern families Boyle on the death of Mary Mulhern, nee Cox in Ballina.
The Club encourages its underage members to participate in the Boyle Community Games Athletics Sports Evening in the College Field starting at 4.30pm on this Saturday 14th May.
Didn’t St. Michael’s do well with their scrap metal collection fundraiser….€42, 000 plus they made. I wonder would anyone in Boyle GAA head that effort up. It would be a short sharp campaign. Location for deposit of material would be one of the issues of course. (T.C.).

Sat. 9am.

The Senior League game V St. Dominick's, fixed for Sunday the 8th, has been postponed. I thought postponements were a major taboo. I haven't heard why yet. Cest la vie as Del Boy might say. So Sunday the 15th is 'hitting the beaches day' as Christy O'Connor might say!

Ciaran I hope you and yours had a good journey back to Oz.

Commiserations to two young stalwarts who go injured during the week, Conor Tivnan and Pat Goldrick.

Tues. 2pm. Punchestown Saturday. I don’t know if there are club tickets left but contact Aidan if you are interested.
I listened with mixed emotions to Willie on Shannonside on Sunday evening. It was a pot pourri of the message and the absurd. A friend who tuned in to Ros. v Longford heard about such things a the world knitting attempt and that the ‘death notices’ would be announced at half time! Tough game. Local radio certainly mixes it up.
Boyle GAA has a busy and important period coming up in the next few weeks. On Thursday the U 14s’ play Strokestown, Sunday the minors play St. Kevin’s away and on Sunday the Seniors play St. Dominick’s in the Division 1 League. Boyle play St. Dominick’s in the Intermediate C’Ship on the following Sunday in Elphin at 4 and Kilglass on Sunday the 22nd in the second ‘Ship game the third being v St. Michael’s. Playing St. Dominick’s on two consecutive Sundays in such important games is not ideal but cest la vie. Boyle has 3 wins –Strokestown/St. Faile/C’Rea in the League and 1 defeat to Western Gaels. They played well v Strokestown fair against Western Gaels, were somewhat lucky against St. Fails. Their best performance was against St. Kevin’s in Boyle. Going through the team on that occasion (excuse the abbreviation of first names) Lowe is emerging as a fine keeper, the full back line, O’Donnell and Boylan did well but Kieran Supple got injured so I hope it is not as serious as it looked. Mark O’Connor is solid at centre back with Sharkey doing good work on the wing. Midfield of Cox and Tonra had a very good outing against C’Rea and are having their best year I feel. The forwards were very good against Strokestown, dipped after that but did well against Castlerea. Mark O’Donohoe’s return against C’Rea was fine. O’Callaghan took his goal very well and his height at full forward could be the way to go with O’Connor and co feeding off. The introduction of Aaron O’Connor was very helpful in the game. So if they play as well as they did against C’Rea they can do well. Of course St. Dominick’s are always a tough nut to crack and Ml. Finneran has emerged as a fine player at county level so it will be an avoid Ml. strategy. Like a lot of clubs, I imagine, Boyle would probably not have the strength in depth of yore but we should be as well equipped as most in that respect.
I watched a fine minor team playing great football against a strong Roscommon Gaels last week. Certainly this team and the under-age work being done for some years now should mean that Boyle should be a force for the foreseeable future. So there is a good deal to look forward to if there is not too much loss through emigration or whatever. That team with McDermott, Furey, Harrington, Brennan, Goldrick and McKenna in backs. The return of Jake McCrann is great this year. If you get a chance they are a team to support and see where the skills of the like of Luka Roddy and the pace of Lavin and co. great to watch.

Sunday, May 1, 2011

The following were €20 winners at the most recent Club Lotto draw which was held in Creighton's ;-Joe Mahon, Donal O'Connor, Finola Doherty, Finbar Feely, James and Marian Cox, Gerard Wilson, Gerry McCormack, Eddie Creighton and Frank Mescall. The house prize was won by Jacinta O'Gara. The jackpot wasn't won and a jackpot of €3.300 will be on offer for this week's draw which will be held on Saturday night next in Daly's Bar. Mary Clifford's team will be in charge.

The National Automation minor teams had mixed luck in their meetings with Roscommon Gaels during the week. They lost the Special Minor League game while they had a well earned victory over the Roscommon Gaels in the Division I League on Friday evening last in the Abbey Park. Their next outing is on Sunday next in O'Rourke Park at 12 noon against Castlerea.

The U16s' are still awaiting details of their league semi final opponents. The U14s will play Strokestown on Thursday at 7pm in Strokestown in their Division 1 League. The U12s will play Roscommon Gaels in Lisnamult at 11.30am on Sunday next. The Cooney Motors/Cooney's Centra junior team is also awaiting details of their next outing. The McGovern Directional Drilling team will play St. Dominics on Sunday next in the Abbey Park at 4pm in the O'Rourke Cup. Support would be appreciated as this is their last league outing before the championship. Thanks to all who generously supported the Minor Club church gate collection at the weekend and to those who carried out the duties of collectors. The Club extends its sympathy to the Canny family, Loughglynn and to the Eire Og Club on the death of Richard Canny Senior.

The U14 girls will play the first game of the Championship on Friday 13th May at 7pm against Shannon Gaels in the Abbey Park Training resumes for this panel on Wednesday and it will continue on each Wednesday and Friday from 6-7.30pm.
