Top Corner:

1.Missing Flags:
The Club is anxious to trace the whereabouts of 5 sideline flags which have disappeared from the Abbey Park. Their return would be appreciated.

2. County Draw Tickets:
There is still a need for people to come on board toe sell and buy a number of these as we are well short of our quota at the time of writing.

3. A limited number of tickets for Ros. versus Leitrim available at the Abbey Park, Tuesday the 26th from 8 to 9 on a first come basis.

U 14s’:
Boyle Under 14s’ had a comprehensive win over an understrength Padraig Pearses in the League on Thursday last. They travel to Knockcroghery on this Thursday to take on St Dominic’s at 7pm in their next outing in this competition.

U 12s’:
The Under 12s lost to St Dominic’s on Sunday last. They travel to Roscommon on Thursday evening to play Roscommon Gaels.

Intermediate Team:
The McGovern Directional Drilling team has no fixture this weekend but it is expected that they will be back in action on the following weekend for the first of their two remaining O'Gara Cup games. These are against St.Michael’s and Ballinameen. The team is in a good position to qualify for the play-offs with wins over St. Brigid’s and Clann na Gael seconds, Michael Glavey’s, Shannon Gaels, Creggs and Tulsk with narrow defeats to St. Dominick’s and Roscommon Gaels. I see the first championship game is fixed for Saturday June 20th against St. Barry’s at Barry’s. This is the same week-end of the Roscommon (Leitrim) winners play Mayo. What’s the story there?

Juniors:
There is a possibility that the Feelystone junior team will have a game at the weekend-check fixtures.

Abbey College:
Commiserations to the Abbey College team which lost by 3 points in a thrilling Connacht Colleges Junior Final to Gortnor Abbey in Elphin on Monday last.

Congratulations:
Congratulations to all our young players who received the First Holy Communion at the weekend.

Good Luck and Match Tickets:
Good wishes are extended to the Roscommon Senior and Junior teams who will be in action on Sunday next and especially to all the Boyle connections-panels and managements.Tickets will be on sale for these games in the Clubrooms, Abbey Park on this Tuesday evening from 8pm to 9pm. Early attendance is advised as only a limited supply is available.

First Aid:
It was good to see a number of GAA personnel present for the intensive First Aid day last Saturday in the Resource Centre. While this does not make them medicos it is still good for a few people to have basic knowledge and I am sure that one or two are checking that first aid kit to see if X, Y and Z are present. Thanks to Louise for setting it up.

Derry v Monaghan;
This was a mess of a game and a bad advertisement for the GAA which is struggling to get the championship off this year. Maybe Tipp.v Cork in hurling next week-end will give it a boost.

Ps. N.B. Under ten/under eight (blitz etc) teams need to be listed for insurance purposes. There is a maximum fee for under-age teams. Team Managers please consult the insurance officer.

Boyle Ladies Notes:
Boyle Ladies lost to Strokestown in a very competitive Junior League game in Strokestown on Friday last. Training continues for this panel in preparation for their next championship game which will be in mid June. Under 14 training continues every Tuesday and Friday for this panel. The Under 12 Lions are to meet St Faithleach's in the quarter final of the Division 1 Championship this week and their next game will be on 7th June. The Under 12 Cubs have a home game to Clan na Gael Cubs this week -time and details to be confirmed. Training continues for both Under 12 panels every Monday and Friday.

Top Corner:
We really need a push with the County Board €100 tickets as we just have to reach our qouta this year so everyone is urged to come on board and get single sales or combine in twos, threes or fours to take a ticket.

Intermediates Get Good Result:
The McGovern Directional Drilling team had a hard fought win, in trying conditions, over Tulsk in Tulsk on Sunday last, thus maintaining their quest for a play-off place. The win was the all important thing here and maintains the momentum. Boyle led 5 points to 4 at half time and though Tulsk came back to level at 7 points each two of the backs and ‘Man of the Match’ contenders Tadgh Egan and Cian Beirne sallied forward for the winning scores to end on Boyle 9 Tulsk 7.
The Boyle team: T. McGarty, B. Supple, K. Supple, C. Beirne (1), T. Egan (1), C. Boylan, M. McGovern (1), S. Tonra, C. Cox, M.O’Connor ( 1 fr.), L. Conroy, A. ‘Connor ( 2 gt. points) R. O’Donohoe, C. Smith ( 1), L.Conboy (2), with K.McLoughlin, D. O’Connor (set up a couple of scores) and Ml. P. Gilmartin.
Generally a dogged game to which all contributed so positive vibes this week!
There is likely to be no action for this team or the Feelystone junior team for the next couple of weeks.

Lotto:
There was no jackpot winner at the most recent Boyle Club Lotto drawwhich was held in the Moving Stairs. The numbers drawn were 5/9/13/18. The following were the €20 winners; Pat Leonard, Gerry Carty, Bernard Hickey, Hilary Clifford, Aidan Sheerin, Damien Dooley, Regina McLoughlin, Sean/Grainne (The Copse), Lorcan Egan and Eugene/Peter c/o Scanlon’s. The house prize was won by Brid Murray. This week's draw will be held on Saturday night next in ‘An Craoibhín’ and the jackpot will be €1,400.

U 12s’:
It was a successful week on the playing fields. The U12s’ had one point win over Roscommon Gaels in their Division 4 League on Monday last in Boyle. This is the Club's second string as the Division 1 league, which will involve our first panel, does not start until later.

U 14s’:
The U14s had a good win over Clan na Gael in the Abbey Park on Thursday evening last. See fixtures for details of this Thursday's opposition.
Boyle U14s will play Padraig Pearses in the Abbey Park on this Thursday at 7pm.

Boyle Ladies;
The Ladies kicked off their intermediate championship with a one point win over Castlerea in O'Rourke Park on Saturday evening last in very difficult weather conditions. They will have to wait over a month for their next championship outing.

First Aid:
Those who wish to participate in the first aid course on Saturday next are asked to contact Club Secretary, Kathleen Hanmore on 086 1229421 immediately.

Tickets for Roscommon versus Leitrim:
Tickets will be on sale on Tuesday 26th in the Abbey Park between 8pm amd 9pm for the Roscommon versus Leitrim Connacht Senior Championship game on 31st May. A limited number of tickets will be available and they will be sold on a first come first served basis on that evening. Tickets may also be got through the Connacht Council site.

Congrats:
Congratulations to all who received the Sacrament of Confirmation in Boyle on Sunday.Best wishes to the Boyle Celtic U14s who play a league final on Tuesday.

Referees:
At a recent County Board information meeting (see below) the call for more referees was issued. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they get reasonable remuneration and if a referee did say four or five games in a week it would be as Arthur Daly used say; “A nice little earner”. If anyone is interested I’ll tell you the fee per game. I am proscribed (prevented!) by the GAA Official Secrets Act from broadcasting same.

Stretched Top Corner:

Special Report:

Experience of Veterans Key to Historic Victory:
The ‘Veterans’ team, captained with great skill and guile, by Jnr. Smith and coached by the evergreen Sean Young saw off a determined challenge from the ‘Apprentice Boys’ during the ‘Blue Riband’ event at La na gClub. The Veterans employed some novel and effective tactics in pursuit of glory. These included the ‘weighting’ of the left wing by playing two contrasting players in that key strategic position, Kit O’Connor and ‘Lightening’ Michael Gilmartin, a scratch player. The quiet disguising of their players as umpires and linesmen created considerable confusion in the ‘Apprentice’ ranks with Coach Young making a Kamikaze intervention at one stage. Tom Kearney was coolness personified in goals at one stage taking time batting the ball onto the upright before clearing effectively and always finding a team mate, so initiating those sweeping downfield attacks which became a feature of their play. The cleverness of John McLoughlin, at midfield, in pretending to go for the ball but waving it on to a better placed colleague was most interesting and visually, in a sort of ballet way, disarming. The scoring threat for the 'Veterans' came from the twin tubs (towers) up front Jnr. Smith and Bernard Shannon. Bernard had an intriguing duel with ‘Apprentice’ Conor Tivnan. The score of the game was a cracking Kevin O’Connor goal which sealed victory and this afforded the luxury of a penalty miss for the ‘Veterans’ as the ball boggled on the uneven ground. In an analysis of performances suffice to say that all contributed in their own unique ways and as per pre-match coaching etc. Billy Hanmore, greying hair streaming in the wind of his slipstream as he confronted opposition raids, did well, Fergal O’Donnell scored one majestic point, Vinnie Flanagan was a rock at centre back, Pat Goldrick showed he was willing to learn from the tough tackling rugby he has seen recently in Croke Park, Aidan Lavin laid aside the demands of high office when called upon, like Obama going to Burger Queen. This demonstrates that the generals can also be formidable in ‘no man’s land’. Charlie Candon was flawless, towards the end, as referee, and, after the initial resistance, showed willingness to adapt to the advice of the ‘Veteran’ rules' spokesmen of which there were a few. His initial reliance on rules reminded me of what Dominick Connolly of Fuerty said to me once: "The trouble with some young referees nowadays is that they don't seem to care who wins the game!"

Returning to the game; Stephen Bohan was the subject of some very robust tackling and the tapes are being reviewed to see if any further action will be taken. Paul Beirne and Gerry Cregg basically came from nowhere to create confusion. Paul was suitably attired for the sunshine. Paul Dugnan, who cost so much on the transfer market earlier in the year, is adapting nicely and Brendan Tiernan really revels on these big occasions, though both of the latter missed the important team photograph. This may have to be reorganised at one of the functions. The Veterans led from start to finish by four points and their escape to victory was greeted with prolonged celebrations which demonstrated how much it all meant to these experienced players. (Indeed Martin Purcell was seen later proudly wearing the winner’s medal pinned to his lapel a la a GAA President). However the captain, Jnr. Smith and Vice-Captain Kit O’Connor graciously did visit the losing dressing room with words of encouragement and advice to the ‘Apprentices’ who were visibly shaken by the result.

A small group met afterwards in 'The Showboat Inn' and an ad hoc committee was formed to organise appropriate recognition for the achievement of the ‘Veterans’. The committee is conscious that some, though not all of the veterans, would not want an extravagent display in these straitened times. There is the possibility that members of the team will be visiting local schools and institutions, in the coming weeks, with the cup. Perhaps something like the 2006 All-Ireland winning minors. There may be a short trip through the town at some appropriate time to the sound of ‘Simply the Best’. Other possibilities include exhibition matches on other high profile days, acting as radio or T.V.analyists. Members will also be available for medal presentation ceremonies and such like (note: on a strict rota basis, as it a full panel effort, ‘one for all and all for one kind of mantra) and of course they are now bound to be guests of honour at the Annual Dinner Dance. So we look forward to that. I know that people in New York, London and various Australian cities involved in GAA affairs read these notes religiously so perhaps panel members might volunteer to do some promotional work, for the expansion of the games, in places like Dubai, Hong Kong, New York or Sydney. If this is a requirement all contacts are to be made through their accompanying liaison officer at: tconboy1@eircom.net.

Spectators quietly left the Abbey's field of dreams, thinking, though not necessarily saying, that they had witnessed something special and were glad to be able to say, in the future, 'I was there that day'.

La nag Club a Great Success:
Thanks to all who made the Lá na gClub celebrations on Sunday such a tremendous success. There was an excellent turnout of players, officials and supporters at the parade to St Joseph's Church and at the Mass which was celebrated by Canon Gerry Hanley and which included Club members participated in many aspects of the ceremony. The welcome return of sunshine added to the days activities in the Abbey Park which included the 125th flag raising ceremony, under age football blitzes, an intriguing fathers and sons football game, cic fada and poc fada competitions. The puc fada was won by Barry Greaney with Fergal O’Donnell second and long time leader, Tony C. third.
There are many people and groups who deserve thanks and great credit for their contributions. I will venture to list them here; Canon Hanley for his help in the church celebrations, the choir, Louise Carty and the traditional group. Boyle Marching Band who shone in the sunshine. Special thanks are due to the Fishing Club for provision of barbecue facilities and to Michael and his team who looked after the catering. To Aidan and his team in the preparations. To Martin Dolan who strove to have a good programme in place, to Ciaran and his blitz mentors and teams, to Jnr. and his team who participated valiantly at considerable personal risk, to Liam Clifford for the truck and gas, Mary Regan photographer to the other snappers to Sean O’Dowd and realboyle, the media for the mentions, Marian and Spar, Charlie and the puc fada. There are very good pics emerging from the day starting with the veterans team here on realboyle. Now if I have left anyone out, and I imagine I have, please let me know so that I can rectify same.
Indeed such was the success of the day that it has been mentioned as a possible an annual or bi-annual event perhaps tying in with other town festivals.

County Tickets Meeting:
There will be a meeting of the Club on this Wednesday evening at 9 p.m. in the Royal Hotel to review progress on the sales of the Annual County Board Draw tickets. Tickets, which are €100 each, are available from all Club officers. Now that La na gClub has been successfully negotiated it is important to get this item wrapped up and the quota reached and put to bed.

First Aid Course:
There will be a first aid course held in Boyle on Saturday 23rd May from 10am-4pm in the Resource Centre
Club mentors are asked to attend. Names should be given to Club Secretary, Kathleen Hanmore at 086 1229421.

The Feelystone junior team suffered a four point loss to St Ronan’s in the Div 4 League on Monday last in Ballyfarnon.

The McGovern Directional Drilling Intermediate team’s O'Gara Cup game versus Ballinameen which was due to have been played on Saturday last fell victim to the weather. Their next outing is on Sunday next in Tulsk against the home side.

U 14s’:
The Under 14s had a good win over Castlerea in the league on Thursday last. Star of the show was left half back Luke Brennan. They will meet Clan na Gael in Abbey Park on this Thursday evening.

Congratulations to the Roscommon ladies on winning the Division 3 National League title on Saturday and especially to our Boyle connections-Boyle players Maria Keenehan who had an excellent game and her sisters Sinead, Susanne and Sarah who were panel members and Boyle native, Marla Candon who helped Roscommon rule the midfield area.

Fiona

Friday, May 8, 2009

Top Spot (Friday afternoon):

1. Meitheal required Sat. a.m at 10 for park clean up etc.

2. I am hearing great things, from a top source, of Luke Brennan's performance against Castlerea in the U 14 League in Castlerea on Thursday evening which Boyle won.
Top Corner:
I have been asked to inform the young teams involved in games on Sunday that the Club room, at the Abbey Park, will be open from say 10, if they wish to leave their gear there then rather than hawking it in the parade etc. Spread the word. I presume that team managers will have club jerseys on the Crescent for their teams before the start of the parade.

Monday, May 4, 2009

Top Corner:
Intermediate team versus Ballinameen Saturday the 9th in Ballinameen at 6.30.

La na gClub Sunday the 10th assemble at the Crescent, in club colours, for Mass Parade from 10.30ish. Anyone with club flags please bring them also. Show where we're at after 125 years.

La na gClub:
Sunday next 10th May is Lá na gClub, a very special day for the Club as it will mark the 125th anniversary of the founding of the GAA. Boyle Club has put together a substantial programme of activities, starting with assembly of all Club teams-male and female- in their colours at the Crescent at 10.30 to parade to St Joseph's Church behind the Boyle Marching Band to attend and participate in a special Mass. After Mass all will parade to the Abbey Park where the Centenary Flag will be raised and the Lá na gClub will be officially celebrated. This will be followed by a barbeque, underage football exhibition, long kick and long puck competitions and other novelties. All parishioners, especially those who have had past or present involvement with the Club, parents and supporters are cordially invited to come along. The responsibility is placed on all team managers to ensure that they have full panels of players available for participation for the entire event. This is a once-off event and their full participation is required.

Lotto:
There was no jackpot winner at the last Club Lotto Draw which was held in Dodd’s. The following were the €20 winners;John and Marguerite Nally,Tom Callan, Marian McGovern, Colm Loftus, Joseph ODowd, Pauline Regan, Joan McDermott, Alice Mattimoe, Noel Doherty and Ciaran Sheerin. The house prize was won by Mary Rooney. The next draw will be held in The Moylurg Inn on Saturday night next 9th May with Aidan Lavin's team in charge and the jackpot will be €1,300.

U 14s’:
The Under 14s had a very good win over Roscommon Gaels in the league. Their next game is away to Castlerea on this Thursday at 7pm in O'Rourke Park.

U 16s’:
The Under 16s’ lost to a stronger Michael Glaveys outfit in the champioship semi final at Ballinlough. It was hard to tell a disbelieving activist over the mobile that the half time score was Michael Glavey’s 1.9 Boyle 1.0 (from McPadden). The team did much better in the second half but the vital scores came too late to give a real opportunity of a dramatic comeback. Still the goals from McPadden –a volley- and McLoughlin were fine efforts. There were a few little things here for coaches to watch eg. the provision of balls for the goalkeeper 9since we were chasing the game), a coach close to the keeper to help him direct his kicks especially away from power players on the opposition side etc. These small things sometimes provide the edge and come naturally with experience! However this team has many fine players and they were beaten by a strong and well balanced side. They will have a football break now until the Junior Certificate exams are over.

Minors:
The Think Energy minor team lost to a much stronger Padraig Pearses opposition on Sunday evening in the Abbey Park. This team is struggling with numbers and it was hard to see young McKenna being asked to play after coming from the soccer game in Newbridge. Likewise, they will have no fixtures unter after examinations.

Juniors:
The Feelystone junior team played St Ronans in Ballyfarnon on Monday-result next week.

Intermediates:
The McGovern Directional Drilling team had a 7 point win over Creggs on Sunday in the O'Gara Cup. This was a bit of a struggle against a fairly weak side. Boyle led by 1.4 to 0.5 at half time. A mistake late in the second half narrowed the lead to three points 1.10 to 1.7 and gave Creggs a glimmer but a clever point (fisted!) by substitute Darren O’Connor gave the necessary four point lead. Kyle McLoughlin confirmed the result with a very good goal shortly afterwards. The final score was 2.12 to 1.8 (?). Improvement will be required for their next outing which is a visit to Ballinameen to meet the home side at 6.30pm on Saturday the 9th.

Main Pitch Needs Consideration:
All team managers are asked to note that training and pre-game warm ups are NOT ALLOWED on the main pitch at Abbey Park. All teams must train at the Abbey Park training ground or at the Warren as per the training rota.Only official matches may be played in the Abbey Park and these must be cleared with the pitch co-ordinator. The pitch has had to cope with an enormous work load of games in recent times. Hopefully when the Abbey College pitch comes on stream there will be some relief.

Boyle Celtic U 14s’:
Hard luck to the Boyle Celtic U14s’ who did not achieve their Connacht title dream at the weekend.

Abbey College:
The Abbey Community College second years will play their long awaited Connacht Final against Strokestown in Ballinlough at 1pm on this Wednesday. Support would be greatly appreciated. Well done to the Abbey College juniors who have also qualified for a Connacht Final.

Minor Club Church Gate Collection:
Thanks to all who contributed so generously to the Minor Club annual collection at the weekend.

Ladies Report:

Juniors:
Boyle Junior ladies lost out to a stronger Ballinameen team last week, they
now have a break from games due to the County League Final.

U 12 'Lions':

in Boyle this Wednesday 6 May at 6.30pm (this game was re-scheduled due to
La na gClub)

U 12 'Cubs':
Boyle U12 Cubs play Shannon Gaels away on Wednesday 6 May at 7.00pm

U 14 Girls:
U14 Girls are training every Tuesday and Friday.

All member of Boyle Ladies GAA are expected to participate in the La na
gClub
day in Boyle this Sunday 10 May 2009. All Managers, teams of U10/U12,
U14 and Junior Ladies meet on Crescent for parade at 10.30pm to St Joseph's
Church for 11.30pm mass and then parade to Abbey Park for a fun-filled

That's it!
