Abbey Community College 2.9 Glenamaddy 1.10.
Abbey Community College second years had a fine win over Glenamaddy in the Connacht Colleges final at Loughglynn on Tuesday. The teams were level at 1.5 each at half time. In this half Boyle relied for the most part on the free-taking of Micheal Lavin. A good goal by Eoin Lavin twelve minutes into the second half set Boyle on their way but not without some anxious moments towards the end. Glenamaddy relied too much on one very good player while Abbey College was better balanced side. The Abbey side was as folllows: J. McDermott, J. Morris, G. Gunning, J. Sweeney, T. Duignan, C. Goldrick (Capt.), T. Burns, E. Smith, M. Lavin, C. Lavin, K. Henry, Conor Murray, E. Lavin, A. Harrington, D. Casey and J. Kilcullen. Best for Boyle were: Smith, Morris, a very good half-back line of Duignan, Goldrick and Burns. Up front it was the Lavins and the strong running Kilcullen.
Pictured below is the winning team with their coach Mr. Greaney while team captain, C. Goldrick is shown with the winners shield.

Abbey College Final:

Great Game at Tuam:
Hard luck to the Rossies senior team on their narrow defeat, after an excellent performance, against Galway on Sunday. The Boyle trio of David Casey, Damien Keenehan and Sean Purcell did very well. It was a strong Galway team. Ros. seem to be struggling in the fullback line, midfield and in the full back line at the moment!! Whether they have the resources to reinforce those areas is the question for the future. The sight of Galway's Barry Cullinane fetching a lot of ball towards the end, almost uncontested, was disappointing. One thing though, there is great spirit in the team and the first four games of the year have been most enjoyable. Good luck to all in the National League versus Offaly on Sunday next. Congratulations to the U21s on retaining the Hastings Cup.

Best Wishes:
Best wishes for a speedy recovery from illness is extended to our former Parish Priest, and GAA stalwart, Canon Peadar Lavin. Similarly we extend our best wishes to David Siggins who was injured in a car accident on Friday night last and who is currently hospitalised with injuries.

The Club extends its sympathy to the Supple family, Garrow on their recent bereavement.

Top Note:
If anyone has a photograph of the 1983 team from the 1983 game at Frenchpark please let me know. T.C.

Club Senior AGM:
There was a large attendance at the Club's AGM which was held on Sunday last, January the 18th, in the Royal Hotel. Club President and former Roscommon All Ireland Senior Football medal winner John Joe Nerney complimented all club players at all age groups and their mentors and all Club officials on achieving a very successful 2008.This theme permeated the reports of Chairperson, Aidan Lavin and the Secretary, Kathleen Hanmore. Kathleen reported on a busy and successful year and acknowledged the efforts that were put in by so many. It was noted that there are high hopes for success on the playing fields in 2009 and that there are ambitious plans in preparation for construction of dressing room and ancillary facilities at the Abbey Park.

The Treasurer:
The Treasurer Michael Gilmartin, in a detailed and at times an amusing presentation (not easy in the presentation of a financial position in these times), Michael warned of the need to achieve economies in the running of the Club.

P.R.O.
The PRO Martin Dolan thanked the media-Roscommon Herald, Roscommon Champion, Shannonside, Roscommon People and Sean O'Dowd and Tony Conboy of RealBoyle.com for their excellent coverage throughout the year.

Sean Daly Remembered:
The Club remembered all who had passed away during the past year and who had associations with the Club and a minute's silence was observed for former player and team manager Sean Daly.

Election of Officers:
All outgoing officers were returned unopposed and they are as follows; President-John Joe Nerney, Vice-Presidents-Paddy McDermott and Barry Feely, Chairperson-Aidan Lavin, Vice Chairperson-Paul Beirne, Secretary-Kathleen Hanmore, Assistant Secretary-James Cox, Treasurer-Michael Gilmartin, Assistant Treasurer-Peter Gavigan, PRO-Martin Dolan, Insurance Officer-Michael Furey, ASAP Officer-Jan Flanagan, County Board Delegates-Mary Clifford,Martin Purcell and alternates-Michael Smith,Tony Conboy and Kevin Young. Pitch Coordinators-Martin Purcell, Michael Brennan and Billy Hanmore. Park's Committee-Aidan Lavin, Charlie Candon, Paul Beirne, Ernie Keenan, Eugene Halligan, Pat Goldrick and Tony Conboy. History Committee-Tony Conboy, Mary Clifford, Barry Feely and Martin Dolan. The filling of the intermediate and junior team management posts were deferred until the next Club meeting.Gary Wynne is to remain in charge of the U 21 team.

Thanks:
The meeting thanked John Bruen for his excellent work as Manager of the intermediate team during 2008 and extended best wishes to him and his family and wished him every success as manager of his native Eastern Harps.

Well Done:
The meeting complimented David, Sean and Damien on their fine performances on the Roscommon team in the FBD league win over Mayo. It is nearly thirteen years since Boyle had three players playing in the county senior colours on the one day. That was on February 4th 1996 when Tom Ryan, Gerry Cregg and Niall O'Donohoe played against Antrim in the national League in Hyde Park. There may have been another occasion around that time when Johnny Conroy was involved. Let me know Johnny plus the thesis! (T.C.)

Thus concluded one of the best attended and, it is fair to say, enjoyable AGMs in many years.

Quiz:
The Club will hold a table quiz, on Friday night next, 23rd January, in the Moylurg Inn, commencing circa 9.45pm. ish. All quiz enthusiasts in the region are asked to come along as this should be an entertaining night with Tony Conboy as quizmaster.

Club Social:
Plans are falling into shape for the Club's social and buffet which will be held in St Joseph's Hall on Saturday 7th February. This promises to be a very special night as the Boyle 1983 county intermediate championship winning panel and their management will be honoured. The senior club 'Players of the Year', 'Club Person of the Year' and 'Hall of Fame' awards will also be presented. Tickets are EUR25 each and since they are limited those wishing to attend should contact any of the officers of the club, immediately.

Lotto Win:
Congratulations are extended to Marie Kennedy, Copse, on winning the Club lotto jackpot-details of all winners next week.

Right: U 10 Player of the Year, Conor Deery receiving his 'Player of the Year' from special guest Nigel Dineen.
Top Note:
1. Does anybody have a proper photograph of the 1983 Intermediate Championship winning team? The one I seem to have is a coloured photocopy.

2. Roscommon plays Mayo in the F.B.D. league at Ballyhaunis on Sunday next, the 17th. It's at 2 p.m. I presume. We'll be back just in time for the A.G.M!

A.G.M.
The Annual General Meeting of the Club will be held in the Royal Hotel on Sunday next 18th January at 5pm. All members, and those wishing to become involved in the further development of our vibrant club, are encouraged to come along. The 1983 Intermediate County Championship winning team will be honoured and the annual club awards will also be made. (Patrons should bear in mind that tickets numbers are limited and it is important to bear in mind that they will be sold on a first come first served basis).

E.G.M. Decision re. Dressing Rooms:
The Club decided, at a well attended E.G.M., to proceed with proposals to construct new dressing rooms and ancillary facilities at the Abbey Park. This decision is based on a number of elements falling into place. Work will now proceed on putting the financial arrangements in place and tenders will be sought thereafter.

Lotto:
There was no jackpot winner in the most recent Club Lotto draw which was held in Kate Lavin's. The €20 winners were as follows; Dessie McLoughlin, Pat Brogan, James Dodd, Maeve and Seamus Brennan, Donal Kelly, Eileen McGowan, Evelyn O'Donnell, Amy Sweeney, Ann McGlynn and Irene Tivnan. The house prize was won by Noel Mullaney. The next draw will be held in Wynne's Bar on Saturday night next with Team A under Aidan Lavin in charge. The jackpot will be €1,500.

Thanks:
Boyle club wishes its former intermediate team manager John Bruen the best of luck as he takes over the management of his native Eastern Harps. We wish to sincerely thank John for his dedication to the management of Boyle to the Intermediate Championship Final and the winning of The Tansey Cup in 2008 and the achievement of promotion to the O'Gara Cup league for 2009.

Adult Scor:
Those interested in participating in the Boyle colours in the forthcoming Adult Scór competitions are again reminded to contact the P.R.O. on 086 2413529.

GAA History on T.V.
T. na G. are currently running a series on the history of the GAA on Sundays at 3.45 and repeated on Friday nights at 9. They are short 25 minute segments.
P.S. It was interesting to hear that the Cuala team in the south side of Dublin city has 60 teams in its club and it is not the only club in this position on the city and perhaps in some other locations.

Bon Voyage: (The French version)
I had a good conversation to former Boyle player Ciaran Conlon on GAA and other matters in Brisbane. Safe journey back Ciaran and family.

Boyle Ladies Club
.
The Ladies GAA Club will hold its AGM in the Royal Hotel on this Saturday evening 17th January at 6.30pm. All interested in further promoting ladies football in Boyle are encouraged to attend.
Slan is beannacht.

John Bruen Departs:
There was real surprise and disappointment when word came through, mid-week, that John Bruen would not be continuing with the Boyle Intermediate Team this year. John was under considerable pressure to return to his own club of Eastern Harps when their manager Dennis Johnstone took over St. Mary's Carrick-on-Shannon. John is of course a life-long Harps man. It is a pity that he could not remain this year as there was an expectation of being able to build on the good work and achievements of last year. He was very well received, and thought of, by players, club officials and supporters of Boyle and maybe sometime in the future he could return. So we wish him well with Harps and thank him, wholeheartedly, for his fine contribution in '08.
Hopefully the club will be able to get a satisfactory replacement, not an easy task. (This news was in Australia this am Friday!)

Minor Club Presentations:
Boyle Minor Club held a well attended awards night on Friday evening last in St. Joseph's Hall at which medals were presented by Nigel Dineen to the successful Boyle U 11 Keenan Cup and U 16 Ahern Cup teams. He also presented ‘Player of the Year’ awards to the following winners;-U10-Conor Deery, U11-Jack Cox, U12-Evan McGrath, U14-Tadhg McKenna, U16-Mark Goldrick and Minor-Jonathan McDermott. The following were also presented with the ‘Most Improved Player’ awards; U10-Liam Casey, U11-Cian McKeon, U12-Patrick Goldrick, U14-Jason McDermott, U16-Tadhg Lowe and Minor-Kyle Suffin. Thanks to Nigel Dineen for his attendance and for his words to the players.
There was also a presentation to Brian Nerney who was stepping down after a period as Treasurer.
It was noted on the night that Boyle Club now organises: the U 10 Blitz for the Roscommon Herald Cup; the U 11 Keenan Cup; the U 14 Garda Cup- to a degree- and now the Ahern Cup for U 16. This is a major contribution to under-age football in the North-West region.

Roscommon impressive at the Abbey Park:
Abbey Park provided the setting for Fergal O'Donnell's Roscommon's first competitive win on Sunday when we hosted the FBD League game versus Sligo IT. It was fitting that Fergal and Stevie should start successfully in Boyle and that Boyle players David Casey and Sean Purcell should acquit themselves so well on their home ground. It was a pity that Damien Keenehan fell victim to flu as it is likely that he would have featured-hopefully he will be fit for next week in Kiltoom when Roscommon face a stiffer challenge against NUIG. Thanks to all Club members who helped with the stewarding and catering and also to our young club lotto ticket sellers.

EGM:
The special EGM of the Club will be held in the Royal Hotel on this Friday night at 8pm to consider proposals to construct new dressing rooms and ancillary facilities. The Club has a short timeframe in which to avail of the Sports Capital grant which it has been allocated. It is important that all club members attend as important decisions regarding fundraising etc have to be made.

Lotto:

There was no Jackpot winner in Kate Lavin's on Jan. 3rd. The numbers drawn were: 4, 8, 10, 23. The €20 winners were: D. McLoughlin, P. Brogan, J. Dodd, M.& S. Brennan, D. Kelly, E. McGowan, E. O'Donnell, A. Sweeney, A. McGlynn, I. Tivnan with the House prize going to, N. Mullaney. Then next draw is in Wynne's with team 'A' on Sat. the 17th of Jan. with the Jackpot at €1500.

AGM:
The Annual General Meeting of the Club will be held on Sunday 18th January in the Royal Hotel at 5p.m. All motions should be submitted to the Secretary Kathleen Hanmore by Sunday next 11th January.

Club Quiz:
The Club will hold a table quiz in the Moylurg Inn on Friday 23rd January with Tony Conboy in charge. This will be a fun night and all are invited irrespective of quiz skills or experience.

Club Social:
The club will hold its annual social in St.Joseph's Hall on Saturday night 7th February. This promises to be an extra special night as the 1983 County Intermediate Championship winning team will be honoured. Tickets €25. It will be on the lines of the 'Back to Boyle' event. If anyone has a good original picture of that day and team please let me know.

Scor:
The Club wishes to make a special effort to participate to the fullest extent possible in this year's Adult Scór competitions. There will be competition in set dancing, figure dancing, novelty act, solo singing, ballad group, recitation and quiz. Those who are interested in participating or in assisting with organising are asked to contact the P.R.O. at 086 2413529.

Sympathy:
The Club extends its sympathy to the Purcell family, Drum, Boyle on the death of Bill Purcell, Behy,Knockvicar, father of former Boyle Chairperson, Martin and grandfather of current Boyle and Roscommon player, Sean.

Busy Busy:
Reflecting on the dates for the above if you insert some other happenings of interest in Boyle it will make for two busy week-ends on January the 30th and February 6th and 7th. The World Rally Night is on Friday the 30th and we expect that to be a Fleadh and Carnival night in Boyle. The following week-end on Friday the 6th you have the Boyle Person of the Year Awards and on the same night a Quiz in Daly’s in aid of the Convent National School and on Saturday the Boyle GAA Social.
