Wed. 5.15......Ireland defeated England 329 for 7 in probably the greatest Irish team sporting victory ever in Bangalore, India in the Cricket World Cup. If you see this early, the highlights are on BBC 2 at 10 pm tonight, Wed.
Tues. 10.00 pm.The Sec. of the Minor Club has circulated Garda vetting forms to the managers of teams. While many of the people have completed the process last year there are always NEW coaches coming on board and they have to be aware that Garda vetting is an obligatory requirement for any such coaches with ANY under 18 year olds even if these U18s arer playing for the senior club.
ntdwgaa: I see Chelsea have their own Goodfellow,Joe Pesci!
It was sad to see Wicklow T.D. Dick Roche lose (lose not loose) his seat not once but twice on Sunday wasn't it?
I am really sad to see the demise of the Greens but as J.F.K. said: "He who rides the tiger often ends up inside." (Should the quotation marks be inside or outside the full stop ?)
Monday Feb. 28th 1.30 pm
Friday March 11th there will be a Quiz in aid of the Brisbane GAA appeal with T.C. promoter and quizmaster. So spread the word on that, especially amongst the GAA fraternity in and in other clubs around Boyle.

Congratulations to former Boyle GAA legend Frankie Feighan on being re-elected to the Dail with an impressive vote last Friday. One should also not the role of GAA stalwart/historian et al Tom Mullaney in all that.

There will be an important meeting in the Clubroom on Friday next 4th March to review sales of tickets for the forthcoming draw for weekend away in New York for the upcoming Roscommon v New York Connacht Championship game. All who have been allocated tickets are asked to attend with proceeds of sales or unsold tickets. Those who cannot attend should inform the Treasurer in advance regarding amounts sold.
The 2011 playing season commenced at the weekend with mixed results for our two teams that were in action. The minors had a convincing win over Clan na Gael in the Division 1 league in the Abbey Park on Sunday. The final score was Boyle 3.12 Clann na Gael 0.14.Boyle led by 1.7 to 0.6 at half time. This was a good win for Boyle over a solid Clann side. Hopefully this win will cement a good campaign for the side. There is a core of very good players here and they will be the nucleus of Boyle adult teams from a couple of years hence.

The Cooney Motors/Cooney's Centra junior team lost to a stronger Michael Glavey’s outfit (their first team) in Ballinlough on Saturday.
The McGovern Directional Drilling senior team will entertain Strokestown in the first round of the O'Rourke Cup competition on Sunday next in the Abbey Park. This is a really interesting game so your support is very much encouraged.

Thanks is extended to all team mangers who ensure that the dressing rooms are left in a clean and tidy condition after games and training sessions and those who may have overlooked doing so are asked to include this in their schedules.
The Club will be participating in the Senior Scór County Finals in Ballinaheglish on Saturday night next.
Secondary schools students from the Club area are reminded that the Roscommon County Board are offering a number of grants to students who wish to improve their knowledge of Irish by enabling them to attend a Gaeltacht. Those who are interested are advised that further details may be obtained on the County Board website at irishculturalofficer.roscommon@gaa.ie .
Congratulations are extended to St Brigid’s on their excellent performance in their victory over Nemo Rangers in the All Ireland Club Semi Final on Saturday last. It was a great game and easy to change from the mediocre Ireland v Scotland stuff. The Saturday papers and the coverage of GAA games generally is getting hammered in the national media by the 'fashionable Celtic Tiger rugby and English soccer'. Here's hoping for ultimate success on 17th March for Brigid's. The Dublin Croke Park experiment seems to be a great success so fair play to them.
The Club extends its sympathy to the Flanagan Family, Rockingham on the death of Pat Flanagan. Pat played himself for St. Michael’s and was regarded as a good uncompromising player. His sons Xavier and Mel played for Roscommon in the sixties/early seventies, of which Pat was very proud. Mel was an outstanding player at St. Nathy’s and with Roscommon.
ntdwgaa per T.C.: This is the week of the ‘agony and the x td’. My faith in the Irish electorate has been somewhat restored. They must now be the most informed electorate anywhere. One now encounters political commentators and 'economists' on every corner, pitch and bar stool. One colourful T.D. of oriental hue may now have gone through the 'phases' of burning weed, to burning turf towards burning bondholders. If you want to contact him press the 'hash' key on your mobile. So hopefully there will be some 'openess and transparency' with the new regime. If the new Government does not bring the people with them they-the electorate- can change direction like a bog fire. But I'm sure they know that as the Boyle Town's Commissioner said to Maureen O'Sullivan.
Don't forget the Ireland versus England game in the World Cup in Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangolore on Wednesday at 9am G.M.T. There was a cracking draw there on Sunday between England and India.
One of the games of the year Clarenbridge v De La Salle Waterford in the All-Ireland club hurling semi-final the 19/20th.
How are things in British Columbia (B.C.) T.E.?

The Club is extremely grateful to Alan Cooney and Cooney Motors/ Cooney's Centra for coming on board as sponsors of the junior team for the coming season.

The McGovern Directional Drilling team will vie with neighbours St Michaels and Eire Og and St Dominics while the junior team will participate in the Junior A Championship against Clan na Gael B,Castlerea B and Oran.

Those wishing to assist should contact Tony Conboy.

Sat. 11.15 pm.
Boyle’s Intermediate Championship Group of 4 is: Boyle, St. Michael’s, St. Dominick’s and Eire Og. A good variety there from St. Dominick’s who knocked Boyle out last year and reached the county final only to lose to favourites Strokestown. Then there is the local derby between us and St. Michael’s and Eire Og.
Boyle is in the junior ‘A’ division this year and their group is Boyle; Clann na Gael Oran and X.
I am just after watching a cracking hurling game between Clarenbridge, Galway i.e. the Kearns (sp.?) brothers versus De La Salle, Waterford, with John Mullane and co. It went to extra time and while one wants Clarenbridge to win you have to feel for De la Salle. Then I tried to watch a bit of Manchester Utd. versus Crawley but gave up. It was awful.
I mention two T. V. programmes: One on Monday night at 7.30 ‘Cloch Le Carn’ profiles Roscommon great Dermot Earley. The other on Sunday evening is a profile of Mayo Senior Champions for 2010, Ballintubber outside Castlebar where there is a lovely Abbey which I recommend people to visit.
Lotto: There was no Jackpot winner in the draw of Feb. 12th in Kate Lavin’s. The €20 winners were: Ml. Brennan, Lorcan Egan, Ailbhe Hanmore, Anne Conboy, Barbara McQuaid, Ml. Egan, Ann Marie Hannon, Ml. Healy, Ml. Foley, Martini McDonnell. The House Prize was won by Barry Harvey. The Jackpot now stands at €2,800 and the next draw on Sat. Feb. the 26th (the night of the election count) is in Wynne’s Bar with team ‘D’.
I’m still seeing those faulty dimmed lights. They are dangerous, especially if the light is the one on the right, and approach you as if they were just motorbikes.

Sun. Feb. 13th...10.30pm.
Note:Immediately below is the covering note I am circulating to GAA clubs in Roscommon followed by Ciaran Conlon's mail from Brisbane, Australia.
A Chara,
Above are the pictures and below is an email I got over the week-end of February the 6th from a former Boyle player, Ciaran Conlon, who now lives Brisbane, Australia. The post speaks for itself. I feel that despite our own club financial stresses and strains we should make an effort to support the Brisbane appeal. If every club in the county gave say €100 or so plus a bit of fundraising I might be able to do myself we could show our solidarity and support by not ignoring the appeal. To ignore the appeal would be very remiss of the GAA here. Anyway I just got the post with attached pics. which show the scale of the disaster for the GAA centre in Brisbane. I can email anyone pics. of the scale of the damage if they are interested. If your club is willing to help/contribute or whatever pans out please let me know.
I endorse Ciaran’s sentiment on the importance of the GAA in Australia at this time. I imagine many clubs will have young fellows passing through Brisbane and benefit from the GAA connections et al there. Ciaran says that there are at least 15 Roscommon GAA players involved and has sent me some of the names and their clubs of origin so let’s see what we can do.
With thanks
Tony Conboy, Boyle. 086 8163399 email

(To all GAA readers: Please highlight this message in GAA circles wherever/whenever the opportunity arises)T.C.

From Ciaran/Brisbane. Hi Tony,
I am now firmly back in the fold having taken on a coaching position with John Mitchells and more recently have been elected to the QGFA committee. Getting to the point of my correspondence I have a favour to ask of you as a staunch GAA man. The floods in Queensland caused substantial damage to the grounds and buildings belonging to the Queensland Gaelic Football Association (QGFA). The kitchen, bar, hall and dressing rooms all sustained a lot of damage not to mention the equipment required for pitch maintenance and basically we have been left with nothing other than the shell of the building. while volunteers have done a great job cleaning up and work has already started to get the venue back on its feet there is a huge task ahead. We have players from every corner of Ireland playing out here - at least 15 from Roscommon - . I would ask you to use your influence to raise the profile of the issue back home. A letter has been sent to all county boards and little or no response has been forthcoming to date. This may be due to it not being a busy time for them or some other sound reason but now is when we need their support and by that I mean financial support. I know that its all gone to hell back home and that money is tight but take into consideration that a large amount of young people leaving for foreign soil at the moment are heading to Australia. It is essential we get the facility back on its feet for more reasons than a game of football. It is a place to meet up with people from home, a place to find work and support if you’re finding it tough, a place to help you adjust to the enormity of how far away from home you are and a place where normality prevails if just for a few hours on a Sunday afternoon out at Willawong Park. At the moment the priorities are to get basic services up and running before St Patrick’s Day and then look at what else we can do at a later date. If you could advertise the tight spot that we are in I would be very appreciative. I am home for a few weeks in April so hope to meet up for a chat then.
Regards
Ciaráin O Chonallain (Ciaran Conlon, Lisserlough now resident in Brisbane.)

Mon.the 14th 2pm.

(ntdwgaa but to whoever is interested I hear, on the grapevine, that Harmac Medical in Castlerea are expanding and recruiting. Is it just me or are there more on blown dims light bulbs on cars these days).
The fixtures have been announced for the forthcoming competive season which gets underway the weekend after next when our second team will travel to Ballinlough to take on Michael Glavey’s in the Tansey Cup. The McGovern Directional Drilling team will entertain Strokestown in the O'Rourke Cup on the following weekend.
The Club wishes Sean Purcell a speedy recovery from injury which was sustained in the Roscommon's win over London on Saturday last.
All users of the facilities in the Abbey Park, including the gym and the clubrooms and the main gates, should ensure that the last person out takes responsibility for securing of doors and gates.
Club Lotto: These are the results from Sat. the 5th from the Patrick’s Well Kate Lavin’s. There was no jackpot winner. The numbers drawn were; 1/10/25/28. The €20 winners were; John Finneran/Harry Wynne/Deirdre&Tom Kearney/Brid Connolly/Paul Kelly/Dominic Kearns/John Lenehan/Bodo Funke/Brendan Tiernan/Joe Sweeney. The house prize was won by Jonathan Conroy. The Jackpot now stands at €2,700.
All who have been given tickets to sell for the forthcoming Club monster draw for attractive prizes, including a weekend away in New York for the Roscommon versus New York Connacht Championship on the May weekend, are asked to keep the Club officers updated on progress with sales.
The Club extends its sympathy to the Sweeney family, Brislagh on the death of Margaret. Members of the Sweeney family are immersed in the GAA in Roscommon. Sympathies are extended to the Kenny family, Marian Road and Mullingar on the passing of Sean who played for Boyle in his youth.

Also a reminder about the Ladies AGM on Sunday the 13th at 3.00pm also in clubrooms.

Tues. 8th..12.15am. I am just after returning froma Co. Board meeting and one item I want to mention quickly is a coaching course here in Boyle on Friday evening/night. It is important that the potential coaches are made aware and avail of this.
I'll post a number of other items from the meeting tomorrow. Goodnight!!

Sun. Feb. 7th 1.15am.

Those who have not collected their allocation of tickets for selling in the forthcoming above draw are requested to attend in the Clubroom on this Tuesday between 7.45pm and 8.15 pm. The draw will be held circa St Patrick's weekend and it includes a number of attractive prizes, including a weekend in New York in May for the Roscommon v New York game in the Connacht Championship.

The following were €20 winners at the Club Lotto draw which was held in Wynne’s Bar on Saturday night last; John Finneran, Bodo Funke, Deirdre and Tom Kearney, Brendan Tiernan, Harry Wynne, Brid and Conor McGowan, Paul Kelly, Dominic Kearns, John Lenehan and Joe Sweeney. The house prize was won by Jonathan Conroy. The jackpot wasn't won and the there will be a rollover of €2,700 for this week's draw which will be held in Kate Lavin’s on this coming Saturday night. (I made an appeal here a week or so ago for additional people to get involved in the Saturday night Lotto. I’m disappointed-but not shocked-that I have had no respondents. Think again, bearing in mind that the Lotto is the Club’s lifeblood, and surely there are a few extra new people who would help out.

Entries need to be finalised for Senior Scór by this weekend. Those who wish to participate in any of the Scór activities should contact Martin Dolan at 086 2413529 immediatly.
All team managers of adult, under age and ladies teams are requested to attend a meeting in the Clubroom on this Thursday evening at 8.30pm to arrange pitch usage rotas for the coming season. It is essential that all managers attend.
The County team and management are wished an enjoyable and successful weekend in London for the game with London. Well done to Seanie Purcell on his fine performance against Longford on Sunday.
Best wishes to Darren Dockery who heads to Australia this week. Darren has been involved in Boyle teams since under 10sih and has been a very good player for the club. We wish him well, that he enjoys his time and experience and returns safely.
Boyle Ladies Club;
The Annual General Meeting of Boyle Ladies GAA Club will be held in the Clubroom on Sunday next at 4pm. All players, mentors, parents of underage players and all who wish to see ladies football continue to develop in Boyle are asked to attend.

Errata per. T.C….. I have received a telling email appeal from Ciaran Conlon outlining the damage done to facilities at his Mitchells GAA Club in Brisbane. I will be pursuing this issue in the coming weeks and probably issuing an appeal to assist this important support area in Australia.
I see that Dublin are playing most of their ‘home’ games in Croke Park and introducing various half-time entertainments. I’ve heard that Jedward will perform the halt-time entertainment on two occasions. I might try and get there for the half-times at least. (Also, appearing on the All-Ireland Talent Show on R.T.E. on Sunday night next are Daniel O’Donnell and his wife Majella-I think. I hope they do well!).
I have made a Chinese New Year’s resolution –the Year of the Rabbit- (we might be back to that as in the 50s’). Anyway the resolution is; I am not answering incoming calls listed as ‘unavailable’ which often seem to originate in India…..apologies India.
I saw a 60s’ programme of the Tipp. hurling team, on the Croke Park steps, accepting the McCarthy Cup, in the sixties, and one of their members smoking. When recounting this to a colleague he talked of Moss Keane on a wet day for Munster and the outline of a cigarette packet showing in the pocket of his rugby shorts, maybe this view is debateable.
I was reading an account of how the Celtic Tiger bubble got out of control in the Business section of the Indo. of Thursday Feb. the 3rd. last, page 7, and I quote: “Who can forget the crowds that queued overnight to buy housing off the plans? In the event we know (now) that some of those queuing were paid by estate agents to do so……”. I thought that only happened at marts!
Courtesy of Ml. G. golf club pro. “And finally for those who can remember, last Sunday was the 40th anniversary of the first golf shot on the moon, Alan Shepherd was the golfer in question. Good job the course was open!!”

Friday April 1st

Happy 89th birthday to John Joe Nerney of Boyle today Friday April 1st and still going strong.

Tomorrow morning from around 9am. -our time- the World Cricket Cup Final between India and Sri Lanka- takes place in Mumbai(Bombay) the home of the Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. If India win the toss and decide to bat first then Sachin should be at the crease around 11. It is all set up for the legend to enhance that legend.

You can listen to it on BBC 5 Radio and there is live internet streaming on various sources if you have the wherewithal to access same. Also on internet there is a BBC live information and blog feed which is revealing.

It is a thing with me and I referred to it when I was contributing to the Roscommon People. It is the respect for the national flag. On looking through Sean's 'photos on flickr' on realboyle I came across a picture of a flag in an inapproriate state in our town. I had seen it in actuality anyway. The picture shows the flag just draped/abandoned on the roof a very public building, i.e.‘The Courthouse’. Obviously this arose from a broken raising cord or some such malfunction. However it is not right that it be left like that. Many people gave a lot to secure a national flag. Perhaps it is emblematic of where we are as a country, pretty broken.
Could some legal eagle not have the position corrected?
There is an interesting letter in this week's 'The Roscommon Herald'. It is from a lady attending the Michael Glavey's Presentation Dinner and how she felt the ladies team had not received the regard they deserved. I mention it on the basis that we ensure, in Boyle GAA, that we don't make similar mistakes.
Sermon concludes.
