Mon. 12.15am. Next Sunday Roscommon are in an All-Ireland U 21 Final v Dublin in Tullamore at 2pm. The above pic. from Boyle Boys School was celebrating/promoting Roscommon's appearance in the 1980 All-Ireland senior final. I'm interested in having the pic. named so if you could nominate some of the names please contact me.
Query re. Kilkenny family and Green Street.
Also there is some vague suggestion that there may be a Boyle connection on the Dublin team with their star player Ciaran Kilkenny. Is he connected to a person called Ossie Kilkenny? I have a recollection of an Ossie Kilkenny being a masseur to Roscommon team circa 1980. I had a notion that he came from Tipperary and was in the motor business and became a prominent businessman. There is also a suggestion that there was a Kilkenny family living up Green Street yonks ago perhaps in what was called the Slated Halls. Perhaps this is a query for Christy Wynne/Francie Tarpey/Richard McGee though I have a feeling that P.J.Egan may be tuned into this also. I'm just putting it out there so if anyone has any ideas on it let me know. T.C.

Mon. 12.45am. Notices: As announced last week, Liam Conroy was the popular winner of our Club Lotto Jacpot of €5,800 in the most recent draw which was held in Mattimoes Bar. The €20 winners were as follows;- John Finneran, Jackie and Gabriel Valentine, Peggy Feely, Ciaran and Mairead McKeon, Cathy and Steve Garavan, Darren Battles, Mary Rooney, Susan Wynne, James McGee and Aaron Harrington. The house prize was won by Tara Brady. This weeks lotto draw will be held in Creighton's Lounge on Saturday night next with Team E -Pat Goldrick's team in charge. The jackpot will revert to €1,000.
All roads will lead to Tullamore on Sunday next to support the Roscommon U21s in the All Ireland Final against The Dubs. The Club extends its best wishes to the entire panel and management, and especially to our representatives-Tadhg, Donie and David. In preparation for the big occasion, the Club urges businesses and households to deck the Town and surrounds in blue and yellow to show our support. The County Board is organising "Rossie Day" on Friday next 4th May, in preparation for the Final. Roscommon people are asked to wear the County colours on the day and to make a voluntary donation of €2 per person to the Roscommon U21 Training Fund. The schools in the area are also asked to participate in activities on the day, thereby giving them a chance of winning prizes.
The Club is also actively involved in the sale of the tickets for the annual County Board fundraising draw. The prize fund is €50,000 and tickets are available from Club officers. The proceeds go towards the preparation of County teams in all age categories, and it is important to emphasise to Boyle supporters that the proceeds of all tickets sold in excess of the quota stipulated by the County. The Club's own draw for the load of firewood and other attractive prizes will be held next weekend, and it is intended that tickets will be on sale in the Town over the weekend.
Thanks to all who generously supported the church gate collection at the weekend and to those who assisted with the collection.
The Club extends thanks to Dessie McLoughlin and Christopher O' Connor and all others who helped in the organising of a very succesful and enjoyable tribute to Sean Young in the Moylurg Inn on Friday night last.
The U14s will play Clann na Gael in the Division 1 League on this Tuesday in Johnstown.
The U16s defeated Roscommon Gaels and lost to Clann na Gael during the week in the Division 1 League. They have a busy upcoming schedule with a home game with St Dominick’s in Boyle on Friday next at 7.30pm, and games against Western Gaels on Bank Holiday Monday and away to Padraig Pearses on Friday 11th May.
The National Automation Limited minors suffered a five point loss to Padraig Pearses on Sunday evening in Woodmount. Their next outing is against Western Gaels in Boyle on Sunday the 13th.
It will shortly be compulsory for all underage players to wear gumshields when playing or training. The Club has arranged competitive rates locally and details are available from Minor Club officers.
The Cooney Motors/ Cooneys Centra junior team will play Elphin in the Orchard Park on Saturday next at 6pm in the Tansey Cup.
The McGovern Directional Drilling team had a good win over Michael Glaveys on Friday evening last. They will play St Michaels in the Abbey Park on Monday next, May 7th, at 2pm.
All team managers are advised that the Abbey Park will be closed for ALL training until further notice in order to allow for grass growth so that it will continue to be fit for the many scheduled upcoming games. Co-operation with the pitch co-ordinators in this matter is vital.
*****Team managers are asked to ensure that all players respect the Club facilities at all times, as minor but unnecessary damage was discovered at the weekend***.
Congratulations are extended to Alan and Jenny Tiernan on the birth of a baby daughter. Sympathy is extended to the McLoughlin Family,
Patrick Street
on the death of Mrs Esther McLoughlin.
Boyle Ladies Club,
The U16 girls suffered a disappointing defeat to Shannon Gaels in the Division 1 League Final on Sunday. Thanks is extended to the entire panel and their management for their dedication throughout the season, culminating in the reaching of the final stages of both league and championship. The U12 girls had a good win over Shannon Gaels during the week. Their next outing is away to Kilglass Gaels on Wednesday evening. The Junior Ladies are expected to be in action at the weekend-see fixtures for details.

Update always

Fri. 12.40am
The Minor Board Annual Church Gate Collection will take pace this coming week-end on Sat 28th / Sun 29th. So  be aware of it and support it in whatever way you can. The collection has been a vital part of the funding of the minor club down the years.

Wed. 7.30. All managers are asked not to train on or use the main pitch during this bad weather spell. As can be seen it is taking its toll on the pitch with not growth etc and the pitch is needed to be in good shape for coming games. So please use the training pitch or the Warren grounds. (Martin Purcell/Aidan Lavin)

Wed. 1.45. A number of the older players are having an informal social night on Friday night next 27th April in the Moylurg to mark veteran coach Sean Young's significant recent birthday. As the notice says this is an informal event and hopefully many of the players who played with him or were coached by him will be able to be present as a mark of recognition and appreciation for Sean's enormous contribution to the club down the decades.

Tues. 10.3opm. The minor game against Pearses which has been a moveable feast has been fixed for Sunday next the 29th in Woodmount at 6pm.

Mon. 8 pm. (See Ladies Club addition below at 8.30) I have just been informed, per. club Chairman, that the U 21 All-Ireland Final will take place on SUNDAY the 6th of May at 2pm in TULLAMORE. That's not a bad venue and the fact that it is on a Sunday gives everybody who wants to go a chance to go.
Oh yes I hope the town gets appropriately 'togged out' in the coming week or so to honour the occasion. Just to mention that Boyle has a number of All-...Ir. U 21 winners from the town and living here; Pat Clarke, John and Pat Nicholson and John Kelly from the great 1966 team which defeated Kildare and Gerry Emmett from the 1978 team that defeated Kerry in Ros. and Gary Wynne who captained Ros. in their defeat to Donegal at Carrick on Shannon in '82.
Ros. therefore have won two '66 & '78 and lost two '69 (v Antrim @Croke Park) & 82 and also lost semi finals v Kerry in '99 (Ennis) and v Dublin (Breffni Park) in 2010. T.C.
There were a couple of GAA related news items of interest today. One was in relation to the positive role of defibrillators in saving a Dublin club player. Interestingly there was a reference to the fact that the battery was 'low' so they need to be checked obviously, from time to time. The second note referrred to the Wicklow team having been 'robbed' litterly yesterday, at Trim I think, while they were playing Down in a hurling match. Someone slipped up with the door-locking duty. The price of x, y, z is eternal vigilance!  T.C.

Mon. 8.30
Hi Tony,
Please include the following on the Blog;-

Boyle U16 Girls will play their eagerly awaited Division 1 League County Final on Sunday next 29th in Cootehall at 3.30pm against neighbours Shannon Gaels. All GAA supporters and parents are urged to come along and support this talented panel in what will be their biggest challenge to date. Flags and banners will add colour to the occasion.

Sun. 11.55pm. The Club extends its heartiest congratulations to our newest Club Lotto winner! Long serving forward and underage trainer Liam Conroy was the popular winner of €5,800 in our most recent fortnightly draw which was held in Mattimoes on Saturday night last. The draw now reverts to €1,000 for the next draw on Saturday night 5th May. Thanks to all who continue to support our Lotto and to Brogans and Natural Options Pharmacies who continue to sponsor the tickets.
Congratulations also to the Roscommon U21 panel and management on their great All Ireland Semi Final victory over Cavan on Saturday last, and especially to our excellent Boyle representatives Tadhg Lowe and Donal Smith as well as trainer David Casey.
Our U16s have two outings in the Division 1 League this week; on Monday against Roscommon Gaels and on Thursday at 7.15pm in the Abbey Park against Clan na Gael.
The National Automation Limited minors will face Padraig Pearses in Woodmount on this Friday evening in their much postponed Division 1 League game.
The Club is trying to locate the whereabouts of a No 14 National Automation Limited jersey. Players are asked to check their kit bags and the finder is asked to return it to Vincent Flanagan please.
The McGovern Directional Drilling team suffered a disappointing five point defeat to Eire Og in Loughglynn on Sunday in the O'Gara Cup. This was a good competitive game with Boyle short a number of players. The half time score was Boyle 1.7 Eire Og 0.7. Eire Og came out with a strong performance in the second half and were deserving winners in the end. Eire Og 2.12 Boyle 2.8. Boyle's next outing is on Friday the 27th at 7pm when they take on Michael Glavey's in the Abbey Park and they certainly have to do better and it is imperative that they win their home games.
The Roscommon Herald U10 Football Blitz will be held in the Abbey Park on Saturday next, involving the stars of the future from clubs in the North West Roscommon region.
The Club is busily engaged in fundraising at present, with a Club meeting on this coming Monday night to review progress on the sale of tickets for our forthcoming raffle which has as its first prizes a monster trailer load of firewood.Tickets will be on sale at locations throughout the town on Saturday next.
The Club is also actively involved in the sale of the County Board annual draw tickets for a prize fund of €50,000. The Club is anzious to not only achieve the quota set by the County Board, but to exceed same, as the proceeds of all tickets sold in excess of the quota may be retained by the Club. It must be emphasised that this is the County Board's major annual fundraiser and that all expenditure incurred at this level is yielding dividends in the success that is being achieved by our underage County teams in recent years. It is hoped that this will shortly translate to senior level. So your support is support for the kind of success we saw in Longford on Sat. County Roscommon supporters can look forward with optimism to the future as there are many very good young players coming through.
All players, past and present and at county and club levels, who have had the pleasure and benefit of receiving coaching from Sean Young over the past forty years are asked to come along to the Moylurg Inn on this Friday night at circa 9pm for a special occasion to celebrate Sean's contribution in tandem with a significant  birthday. Sean continues coaching with county development panels and his enthusiasm and commitment is exemplary.
Congratulations to Strokestown on the opening, on Sunday, of their fine facilities. It is interesting and great that so many sporting facilities are clustered close together and near the secondary school. The scattered distribution and duplication of sporting facilities is an issue in towns such as ours. If one notices the St.Aidan's and Four Roads situations their National Schools are adjacent to the club grounds which must be very beneficial in the initiating of under-age games.

Boyle Ladies Club.
The highlight of the week has been the exciting two point victory by the U16 Girls over Western Gaels in the County League Semi Final in the Abbey Park on Thursday evening last. They are scheduled to play Shannon Gaels on Sunday next in the County Final-see fixtures for confirmation. The Junior ladies lost out by two points to a stronger Shannon Gaels outfit in the League in a wet Croghan pitch on Sunday evening.

Sat. 9 13pm. Pictured above are the Smith and Lowe family connections after Roscommon's emphatic win (despite late nervy moments) over Cavan in Longford this evening. Donie and Tadhg did great for Ros. and Tadhg's brave save at the end was a game saver. So Boyle GAA is proud of youse and it was great to see older hero David Casey giving instructions (and being listened to as he used to listen to me, years ago!) on the line. So BOYLE TOWN get the colours out for the FINAL  which I'm told is on, on Sat. May 5th, hopefully in, say Mullingar. Enjoy. This makes doing the Boyle LOTTO easier tonight!! T.C.

Wed. 9.30am. The Death of Michael Higgins, Cootehall longtime dedicated GAA referee:
I was deeply saddened, a sentiment that I'm sure will be widely shared, to hear of the death of Michael Higgins of Cootehall. Michael was a logtime referee and gave great service to North roscommon GAA and was a reliable, regular in the Abbey Park. I am sure that generations of players will remember Michael's distictive style as he made his decisions.
The death has occurred of Micheál Higgins of Cloongrehan, Cootehall, Roscommon
Peacefully at his residence. Sadly missed by his loving wife Ann, sons Martin, Noel and Gabriel, daughter Teresa, son-in-law John, daughter-in law Fiona, grandchildren Ali and Jack, brothers Seán, Hubert, Brendan and Peter, sister Kathleen, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and his many friends. Reposing at his home this Wednesday evening until 6.30 o'clock, with removal to St. Michael's Church, Cootehall, arriving 7.15 o'clock. ntdwgaa...Public Meeting on Thursday night next in the Hall at 8.30 relating to the much discussed 'One Way System'.

1pm. Dia dhibh,
There is a long report today so for your convenience I have highlighted various elements.

The following were €20 winners at the most recent Club Lotto draw which was held in Wynnes Bar;- Trevor Conroy, Christy Dolan, Damiem Killoran, Liam Mullaney, Tom Commons, Catherine McDermott, Bridie Gallagher, Marie McPadden, Brendan Gaffney and Thomas and Phil Battles. The house prize was won by Ann Suffin. The numbers drawn were 8/18/21/25. The jackpot wasn't won. It will be at €5,800 for this Saturday night's draw which will be held in Mattimoe's Bar. Mary Clifford's team will be in charge. Thanks to Brogans and Natural Options Pharmacies for input with Lotto.
The National Automation Ltd minors had a successful week with two good wins in the Division 1 League. They defeated Strokestown on Tuesday last and St. Brigids on Sunday, both games in the Abbey Park. They are due to make the long journey, on Sunday next, to Woodmount to take on Padraig Pearses.
The U16s’ will play Roscommon Gaels on this Thursday at 7pm in the Abbey Park in the Division 1 League.
The Cooney Motors/ Cooneys Centra Junior team lost away to Padraig Pearses on Saturady evening last in the Tansey Cup.
The McGovern Directional Drilling team will be back in action on Sunday next when they take on Eire Og in the O'Gara Cup in Loughglynn at 1.30pm.
The Minor Club had a very successful afternoon in the Abbey Park on Easter Monday to coincide with the presentation of medals tolast year's successful underage teams. The highlight of the afernoon was arguably the "exhibition" game between a team consisting of the underage panels with some augmentation from the adult ranks and a team that included the fathers of the younger players together with some former "greats" from the Club. There were also other games involving the age 10 and under panels. Medals were presented to the U16 Division 1 and Championship runners-up panels and the County League and County Championship winning minor panel by County U21 Manager and former star Roscommon player Nigel Dineen. The Club extends its thanks to Nigel for making time to do the presentations and for his well chosen words of advice and encouragement for our young players. Presentations were also made to the U16 management team of Jonathan Conroy, Aidan Lavin and James Goldrick and to the minor management team of Vincent Flanagan, Jonathan Conroy, Liam Conroy and Tom Kearney. The Club also expresses its sincere thanks to Dr Marian Brogan and her husband James who have kindly presented a set of jackets to the underage panel. A special presentation was made to Club stalwart Sean Young on the occasion of his celebration of his significant birthday. Thanks is extended to Gerry, Charlie and Vinard and the other members of the Minor Club for the organising of the event, to Mary Halligan, Olive Filan, Mary Clifford and Claire Conway who looked after the catering and to Mike Junior Smith who was an excellent MC for the evening.
An important meeting of the Club will be held on this Wednesday at 9pm in the Clubroom. All members are requested to attend to review progress on the selling of the Club's fundraising tickets and to arrange for the sale of the County Board tickets.
All team managers are again reminded of the importance of ensuring that all plastic bottles are emptied and disposed of in the containers provided at the end of each training session and following each game. This has improved recently especially with the way bottle tops are removed. This may sound like alittle thing but it contributes to the reduction of the numbers of bins used and thus paid for.
Those who wish to avail of County Board Gaeltacht Scholarships are reminded that all applications must be with Tomás O'Muiri, Oifigeach Cultúir agus Gaeilge by this Friday,or by email to irishculturalofficer.roscommon@gaa.ie
The sympathy of the Club is extended to Mary Halligan on the death of her mother Mrs Mary Cregg, Corrigeen, Mantua. The Halligan family are a highly regarded family in the workings of the club.
The Club extends its best wishes to all who will receive their Confirmation on Sunday next and also to Donal Smith, Tadhg Lowe and the Roscommon U21s and to the management team, including our own David Casey on Saturday next against Cavan in Longford at 4 I believe. There will certainly be a large contingent from Boyle and Ros. there, though the weather forecast that I hear in the background isn't promising.

Boyle Ladies Club;
The adult team had mixed fortunes at the weekend. They went down disappointingly to Ballinameen in their first Junior League game of the season in Ballinameen on Friday evening. They bounced back from that set-back on Sunday to record an impressive four point win over Barna, Co Galway in the Connacht League in Williamstown. They are scheduled to play Shannon Gaels in the Junior League on Sunday next. The U16 girls are due to play Western Gaels this week in the semi final-see fixtures. The U21 girls play Strokestown on this Tuesday at 7pm in their first championship outing. Training for all other teams continues as usual.

Tues. 10.15pm.

Well done to a very gritty Boyle minor team on their win over Strokestown this evening. Both teams were understrength but this win keeps Boyle in a very competitive league hunt. There was plenty of good football as there always is when these teams meet. It demonstrates that the team is still a force. The team has real power players in McGrath and McKenna and a fine supporting cast with Eoin Lavin getting a peach of a goal this evening, Lukie Brennan, Dylan Mattimoe and so on. I used to say this last year but I recommend it again that if you have the chance to go and see this team play, do so, as you will not be disappointed whether they win or lose as they are in with a number of very good sides like Strokestown, Roscommon Gaels, St. Brigids, Pearses and so on.

We wish Tomas Halligan well and we hope he is not seriously injured. He got a nasty knock in the game. Fair play to the speedy attendance of the medical support services.

update 1.30pm

Hi Tony,
A late amendment to the fixtures details on the blog.

The County Fixtures Committee  have determined that the Junior League fixtures (Tansey Cup) are going ahead next weekend instead of the O'Gara Cup games. Boyle will not be in action in the O'Gara Cup against Michael Glaveys as previously stated. Instead the Cooney Motor/Cooneys Centra team will play Padraig Pearses in Woodmount this weekend in the Tansey Cup. Further details to follow as they become available.

Mon. 11pm. Among the activities in the Abbey Park this afternoon was a game between a Veterans selection and the Apprentice Boys. The result, as is often the case in these games, is disputed. The veterans are in dispute with their dietician, obviously.

There are a lot of thank yous and congrats (approx. 12) also which shows the recognition of the support for the club in the area. So thank you all especially the core cabinets which keeps the three arms of the club on track.

The following were €20 winners at the most recent Club Lotto draw which was held in Kate Lavin's pub;-Michael and Sheila Furey, Pat Conroy, Jim and Marie Feighan, John Carroll, Gerry and Phil Emmett, Noel Doherty, Philip Craig, Tom Egan, John McGuinn and Eddie Creighton. The house prize was won by Lisa O'Sullivan. The numbers drawn were: 1/5/21/27. The jackpot wasn't won. This week's draw will be held in Wynne's Bar on Saturday night next when the jackpot will be €5,700. Team C will be in charge.

The National Automation Limited minors will meet Strokestown in their next Division 1 League game on Tuesday next the10th of April in the Abbey Park at 7pm.
The McGovern Directional Drilling Intermediate team had a deserved win over Kilglass Gaels on a scoreline of 1.10 to 0. 6 in their O'Gara Cup game in the Abbey Park on Sunday. The half time score was Boyle 1.3 Kilglass 0.3. Boyle were in control in the second half and were deserving winners. However there are tougher assignments to come. Their next game against St Dominic's, in Knockcroghery, on Friday evening next; at 5pm is one of those. Congrats to Seanie Purcell and Caitriona on their engagement over the week end. I heard Liam Conroy refer to the couple as, the 'Posh and Becks' of Boyle!
The Club wishes Michael O'Donnell and Mark O'Connor speedy recoveries from injuries sustained in the game and our appreciation is expressed to Dr Marian Brogan for her assistance in dealing with the injuries.
The Cooney Motors/ Conney's Centra team will play Ballinameen on Saturday next in Boyle at 3.45pm.
The Club extends its congratulations to our Club President John Joe Nerney who celebrated his 90th birthday at the weekend.

Congratulations also are also extended to the schools quiz teams from Corrigeenroe N.S. and St Joseph's Boys N.S.who performed excellently in the Credit Union Schools Quiz National Finals in the RDS, Dublin at the weekend.
Those who have not yet paid their 'household ...' sorry Club membership are advised this is now overdue. All players and managers and officials are advised that they cannot participate in Club activities unless they are paid up members.
All users of the Abbey Park are implored to keep the place tidy at all times and to put all litter in the appropriate recepticles. As I have said before banana skins and such are not recyclable. Also bottles do not need the tops to be firmly screwed on as this leads to bins half full of water weighing a ton being disposed of.
Team managements are urged to ensure that all plastic bottles etc are collected and properly discarded after all games and training sessions.
Roscommon U16s' will play Sligo in a challenge game in the Abbey Park on Saturday at 11pm. Boyle is represented on the panel by Dylan Mattimoe and Thomas Halligan.The Club extends its best wishes to Donal Smith and Tadhg Lowe and their colleagues on the Roscommon U21 team and management in the Connacht Final versus Sligo in Hyde Park on Saturday next. Ladies Club;
Training for all age groups continues at the usual times throughout the week and full attendances are requested. Hard luck on the U16 girls who lost their quarter-final to Padraig Pearses by an agonising one point in the Abbey Park on Sunday. They still have a Division 1B League Semi Final versus Western Gaels to look forward to on Sunday 15th April. The senior girls had a succesful workout against Western Gaels on Saturday evening in Frenchpark. The Ladies Club expresses its thanks to the huge numbers who supported a most successful Fashion Show in St Joseph's Hall on Friday night last. Thanks to all involved in making it such a success.
Mise, le meas,
