Wed. 6.30pm.
1. My return from queries here is very poor. I think Gareth Gilmartin and a missing cup was a rare success. Anyway I haven’t heard anything about the H.J. Feely Cup for Club Person/player of the Year which can only be in a Boyle house from recent times.
2. Don’t forget to support in differing ways the Minor Club’s Church Gate collection next week end.
3. Best wishes to those who are injured at the moment especially young McDermott who was just back and got seriously injured again. I hope things are improving for you guys.
4. An interesting idea from a recent Club meeting was to try and involve foreign nationals working in the area and introduce them to the GAA and the club rather than proscribing them from playing in the A.P.
5. Puncherstown races Sat. week …tickets €100 per person….. some seats available at Boyle GAA table. A good day guaranteed!!
6. A very good piece from Eamon Sweeney on the back of last Sunday’s Indo re GAA payments to inter-county managers and the cast system in Ireland.
7. Christy Moore in the hall on Friday night …just too dear at over €45 …I’d like to go but …the hall would take say 300 people ( I know it takes more)…so 300 X 45 = 13, 500 gross….I hope the hall comm.. get a slice.
8. Lotto: No Jackpot winner from the 23rd in Creighton’s. The numbers drawn were: 4/8/11/28. The €20 winners were: Joe Mahon/Donal O’Connor/Finola Doherty/Finbar Feely/ James/Marian Cox/Gerard Wilson/Gerry McCormack/Eddie Creighton/Frank Mescall. The House prize was won by Jacinta O’Gara. The next draw is in Daly’s on May 7th with Team ‘D’ and the Jackpot at €3,300.
9. The Minor League Game V Ros. Gaels has been moved to Friday the 29th at 7.30.

The Club Minor Board's church gate colloection will take place this weekend. Your generous support will be appreciated so as to enable the continuation of the excellent wotk that is being done for the youth of the parish. Wlll done to the Roscommon minors on their victory over New York in Croke Park on Saturday and it was great to see three Boyle players-Donal and Enda Smith and Tadhg McKenna all grace the hallowed turf of Croker with distinction. Hard luck on the seniors who disappointed against Longford. Hopefully they will bounce back with a convincing victory over New York this weekend. Bon voyage to Fergal and the lads and especially to our own representatives Sean Purcell, Joe Sweeney,Stephen Bohan and Junior Smith. The Club is grateful to Seamus Nugent who gave an inspiring account of Kilglass Gaels's walk to Croker a few years ago. Boyle Club members are about to commence a strict fitness campaign for a similar venture in September. Mon.17th 11.30am. Sorry for the dominance of text in this blog. Hopefully I'll get a bit capable of inserting pics. etc here anon and make it more presenatable. But you're stuck with the reading material yet. This evening (Mon.) the minors play Castlerea in Boyle, time ??. Tonight, time 9ish I presume, Seamus Nugent of Kilglass Gaels will give an outline of his walk to Croker (Croke Park) as a fundraiser which raised 20 to 30,000 euro. Boyle are hoping to go down that route this September if Club people buy into it. A good fundrainer as such would be great to reduce the capital debt on the club which is, from memory, in the region of €130,000. The next big promtion is the County Board fundraiser on Saturday May 7th at Puncherstown Races. Being a Saturday there is an opportunity for race goers to get involved so if anyone is interested please get in touch with the principal officers. Lotto:There was no Jackpot winner in the recent Lotto draw in The Royal. The numbers drawn were 2/4/15/27. The following were €20 winners;-Pat and Angela Leonard, Tom and Pat Cox, Michael O'Dowd, Nuala and Gerry Morris, John Carroll, Monica Daly, Bernie Walsh, Ger Daly, Deirdre Kearney and Sabrina Farrelly. The house prize was won by John Flynn. The next draw will be held in Creighton’s on this Saturday night with Kathleen Hanmore's team in charge. The jackpot will be €3,200. The McGovern Directional Drilling senior team had a hard earned win over St Faithleach’s in the Abbey Park on Sunday on a scoreline of 3.7 to 1.11 in the O'Rourke Cup.I’ll write up a few comments on it tonight. This is a good start again this year with two wins from three games. Around 9 points is the first objective for remaining in the top division. They will be in action again on Sunday next (Easter Sunday) when they will entertain (!) Castlerea St Kevin’s in the Abbey Park at 4pm.This was the team's first appearance in the new jerseys generously (again) sponsored by Tony McGovern.I remember, the old days (!)when a set of jerseys were for life! I mentioned here last week that I had unearthed a prety good set of Boyle jerseys which some of the team managers might find useful for training or some such. This is the last mention of same. I see that Thomas Crummy has a 'Bikes 4 Africa scheme' so if you have a redundant bike maybe that is something to interest you, though with the price of petrol more people will be getting on their bike. Thanks to Kathleen and Mary for the refresments after the game on Sunday. They set the highest standards as in everything. Go raibh maith agaidh. What about a television etc. in the community room in the A.P.?

Abbeytown tidy and litter picking detail on Wednesday evening! The U16s are awaiting news of their upcoming Division 1 League semi final. The U14s will host Padraig Pearses in the Abbey Park on this Thursday at 7pm. The U12s enjoyed a very successful blitz in a sun-drenched Abbey Park on Saturday last. Thanks to all the teams who participated and to all who helped in the successful staging of the event. Good luck to Seanie and the Roscommon Seniors in the National League Division 4 Final in Croke Park on Saturday next at 5pm and to Donal and Enda Smith and Tadhg McKenna and the Roscommon Minors who get to play in Croke Park on Saturday next at 3 against New York in the Connacht Championship. Here's hoping that all will be back there again later in the year (Sept. 18th!). I presume the Ros. seniors are off to New York next week. A couple of Dublin based people going to the match on Sat., might be looking for a lift to Boyle after the Croke Park game so someone with space might let me know. All minor and U16 players who have not yet paid registration fees are asked to do so in the coming week. Thanks to all team managers who are ensuring that dressing rooms are cleaned after each training session and game. A special thank you to Michael Brennan and Martin Purcell who had the pitch in excellent shape for Sunday's O'Rourke Cup game. All managers are advised that no training is to take place in the pitch on Good Friday from 6.30pm as the Stations of the Cross will take place in the adjacent Boyle Abbey which will open to visitors from Thursday the 21st from 10am to last entry at 5.15pm. Best wishes are extended to Kevin Mullin and Roisin Young on their forthcoming wedding. Tickets are available from the Club Officers for the forthcoming County Board fundraiser at Punchestown Races. Boyle Ladies Club; Boyle U12 Girls will play Padraig Pearses on this Wednesday at 7pm in the Abbey Park. Their game versus St Croans was rescheduled to Ballintubber-see fixtures for details. The U16 Girls are due to play their Division 1B final this week-see fixtures. The U14 girls championship has a change of format this year. The first three rounds are to be played in May and June and the remaining four rounds in August. Details of training will be issued by text. Boyle Junior Ladies will play St Mary's in Boyle this weekend-see details . The Roscommon U14 girls will play Galway this week. Good luck to panel members from Boyle;- Melissa Goldrick, Sarah Halligan, Melissa Mattimoe and Sinead Meehan. Congratulations to Maria and Suzie Keenehan who were on the Roscommon Ladies team who won the Division 4 League semi final against Louth on Sunday and also to Boyle native Marla Candon, who plays her club football in Dublin, who was also a member of the team. They will have a day out in Croke Park in the final shortly. Boyle Junior Ladies v St Marys Good Friday at 4.00pm in Boyle. If you got to here you win yourself a cookie!

Moday 11th 1.30pm. All Club members are invited to attend a special Club meeting on Monday night next 18th April at 9pm in the Clubroom. The meeting will be addressed by Seamus Nugent of Kilglass Gaels who will outline his experience of the "Run to Croker" fundraiser which he organised for his Club in 2009. The U14s lost to St Brigids in the Feile competition on a scoreline of, 7. 20 to 5.18 after extra time, in Kiltoom, on Friday evening last. The U16s had a good victory over Clan na Gael in Johnstown on Friday evening last on a scoreline of, 2. 7 to 2. 4 in the Division 1 League. They have now qualified for the semi final. The Club wishes a speedy recovery to our own Micheal Lavin and to Ultan Harney of Clan na Gael who both sustained injuries in an accidental collision in that game. The Cooney Motors/ Cooneys Centra junior team had a good win over neighbours Shannon Gaels in the Tansey Cup in Croghan, thus giving them their third win in this competition. The Club wishes to thank Kieran Phelan of National Automation who has come on board as sponsors of our minor and U21 teams. It is hoped that the sponsorship will be mutually successful. The McGovern Directional Drilling seniors will host St Failes this weekend in the O'Rourke Cup-see fixtures. The Club congratulates stalwart Club supporter and trustee Ernie Keenan on becoming Mayor of Roscommon County Council. Birthday greetings are extended to Sean (still) Young. Tickets for the forthcoming Punchestown Race Day County Board fundraiser are available from Club officers. This is on a Saturday this year which should enhance its attrictiveness. I (T.C.) have uncovered a pretty good set of Boyle jerseys which could be used for training or whatever if any team manager is interested please get in touch. I asked last week re. flexible shelving….if anyone knows of some please get in touch also. Boyle Ladies Club; Boyle Junior Ladies defeated Shannon Gaels in Croghan on Sunday in the Junior League. Their next outing will be versus St Mary's on the weekend of 22nd/23rd.. The U16 Girls are through to the Division 1B semi final. THis game is scheduled to be played next week. The U14 Girls defeated St Barrys in the Feile competition before losing out to a stronger Shannon Gaels outfit in the quarter final. This squad will take a break from training for a few weeks as their championship is not scheduled to commence until August. The U12 Girls had their first Group A2 game versus Eire Og on Sunday last and were victorious. They will play St Croans in Ballintubber on Sunday next 17th April. Thurs. 7th,10.30pm. I suppose an oddball request. I have been asked if I knew anywhere there might be fairly light 'shelving' as in, stand alone, flexible, which can be put together, adapted or dismantled etc. etc. as opposed to screwed to wall i.e. fixed. If you are aware of same give me (T.C.) a text at 0868163399. ******Table Quiz Friday April 8th 2011 9.30pm The Moylurg - Boyle Barry Greaney***** (PE teacher at Abbey Community College) will volunteer in Kenya this summer and all proceeds from this quiz night will go to the Friends of Londiani Health, Water and Education projects that Barry will be working on in Kenya. Mon. 2.30am The following were €20 winners at the most recent Club Lotto draw which was held in the Patrick's Well; John Joe Nerney,Sandra McCrann, Bernard Hickey, John Joe Carty, Gerry Nerney, Karl Kennedy, Martin Boston, Michael Harrington, Mark Nevin and Mary and Michael Beirne. The house prize was won by Natasha Miiskell. The jackpot wasn't won and it will stand at €3,100 for this week's draw which will be held in the Royal Hotel on Saturday night next. Team B will be in charge. It was a weekend of 100% success for Boyle teams on the playing fields. The U14s’ had a good win over St Dominic’s in the first round of the Feile Competition. Their next outing in this competition is away to St Brigid’s in Kiltoom on this Thursday at 6.45pm. The U16s’ had a hard earned win over St Croan’s in the Division 1 League in the Abbey Park. They will travel to Johnstown on Sunday next to take on Clan na Gael at 12 noon. The Minors had a good win over Michael Glavey’s in Ballinlough in the Division 1 League. They will now have a short break until the commencement of the special minor league. The Cooney Motors/Cooney Centra Junior team had a well merited win over Strokestown in the Abbey Park on Sunday in the Tansey Cup. Their next outing will be a trip to Croghan at the weekend to take on Shannon Gaels. Congratulations are extended to our Club President John Joe who recently celebrated his birthday. Congratulations are also extended to the Roscommon Seniors and to Fergal and his management on securing promotion to Division 3 of the National League. Roscommon is the the only team to have guaranteed promotion from any of the League divisions with a round of games remaining. The Club also congratulates Roscommon CBS on their All Ireland Colleges success. Comiserations to Roscommon U21s. It is indeed a pity that so many supporteres from the area were forced to chose one of those important games over the other because of their scheduling at such diverse locations and with not sufficient time to travel to both. Indeed it is dissappointing that so many supporters were delayed in Galway's Saturday afternoon traffic in trying to reach an extremely inaccessable Pearse Stadium. The Club wishes Conor Tivnan a speedy recovery from injury. The Club is appreciative of and proud of the excellent work that is ongoing in the Abbey Park by the Rural Social Scheme under the leadership of Gerard Tivnan. Sympathy is extended to the Dennedy Family, Boyle on the sad passing of John. John will be remembered by generations of Boyle footballers because in his role as bus driver for McKennas, he drove them to venues all over the County and elsewhere. The Club ask all members to support Club mentor Barry Greaney's fund raising table quiz, to support the needy in Kenya, which will be held in the Moylurg Inn on Friday night next 8th April. Boyle Ladies Club; The U16 girls defeated Castlerea in O'Rourke Park on Sunday last. This was their fifth consecutive win in this competition and results in their winning of Division 2 A of the League. They will play Clan na Gael in the quarterfinal this weekend in Johnstown-see fixtures. The U12s start their competitive season on Sunday evening next at 7pm when they will take on Eire Og in the Abbey Park. They will play Eastern Harps in challenge game on this Tuesday evening in the Abbey Park. The U14s will take on St Barrys in the preliminary round of the Feile Competition. The winners will then play Shannon Gaels in the quarter final. Both games are scheduled for Saturday next 9th April-check fixtures for details. Boyle Junior ladies will play Shannon Gaels in the League on Sunday next in Croghan at 2pm. EXTRAS (T.C.): It is with sadness that I mention the sudden death last night of John Dennedy. I was on many a bus trip with John as driver and he was always so patient and just a nice quiet man. I am sure that there are many Boyle sportspeople who will remember John for his kindness, helpfulness and courtesy on those trips. I made the right decision on Sat. by going to the Roscommon C.B.S. v Clane All-Ireland ‘B’ Colleges Final at Mullingar. C.B.S. won a cracking game in extra time. There was a great atmosphere with reasonable admission prices and so on. C.B.S. had a very balanced team. John McManus, son of Tony’s, really came good from centre back in the extra time as he powered forward. It will be interesting to see who might be nominated as ‘Man of the Match’ if one is nominated. The overall person might come from Clane with Conor Herbert their main threat but C.B.S. would have a good few contenders Nally and Connolly being the uppermost. While it is not an ‘A’ category win (Jarlath’s minus the traditional Mayo boarders are in that Final) it is good to see C.B.S. at this level. It has been a central weakness of Roscommon football that they have not had a consistently competitive second level school in college’s football. In 1951 Ros. C.B.S. won the Connacht ‘B’ also (there was no follow on) and 10 of the team were on the All-Ireland minor winning side later that year. Micheal Shivnan from Cootehall. Not that the management might see this but well done. One of the measurements of class games (in my eccentric book) is the little frenetic shouting/calling that prevails as was the case here. On Sunday’s Indo. There was a real dearth of GAA coverage with significant games not mentioned like the above and the Colleges Hurling final where St. Kieran’s prevailed and I saw nil of the U 21 game Ros. V Galway. I watched some of Kilkenny v Dublin hurling on T.V. and another cracking game that turned out to be. Also the effort/risk/imagination that went into the presentation of what was termed ‘The Spring Series’ of games involving Dublin at Croke Park was very worthwhile. Roscommon will now be back in Croke Park at the end of the month in the Div. 4. Final. Don’t forget Barry Greaney’s Quiz this Friday night in The Moylurg. I attended Dominick Nicholson’s fundraising quiz in The Moorings on Sat. night and one always learns something (as is a sub text with quizzes). Which has most sugar, a bottle of coke or a regular container of Ketchup? Answer = Ketchup. So go easier of the K. Over my head on Friday night I heard a group on the Late Late Show and they really caught my attention with their melody/ lyric and audibility. I never heard of them before but I’d be surprised if I did not hear a good deal more of them. Last week the cricket, this week the U.S Masters. I got a text on Friday saying that Jackie Healy Ray was putting his cap in the ring for President!!! Re. David Norris’s aspirations in same: If England can have a Queen why not Ireland? (You have hardly arrived here?) Go raibh maith agaibh, Martin Dolan/T.C. P.R.O. Boyle GAA Club 086 2413529.

Sat. April 2nd.

Two big games today but awful scheduling for Roscommon C.B.S. are in the All-Ireland Colleges 'B' final in Mullingar at 2 against Clane and the Ros. U 21s' are in the Connacht Final with a chance of a historic 2 in a row at cold, windy, disinterested and inaccessible Salthil at 3. I'm going 'into' the sun.

Boyle Jnrs. are also in action. Tomorrow morning from around 9am. -our time- the World Cricket Cup Final between India and Sri Lanka- takes place in Mumbai(Bombay) the home of the Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. If India win the toss and decide to bat first then Sachin should be at the crease around 11. It is all set up for the legend to enhance that legend.

You can listen to it on BBC 5 Radio and there is live internet streaming on various sources if you have the wherewithal to access same. Also on internet there is a BBC live information and blog feed which is revealing.

They seem to be on the way back. Barry Greaney. the popular Abbey Community College P.E. teacher and Boyle GAA Consulatant, is voluteering to do some work in Africa this summer.
