1.40pm. Tuesday night in Roscommon Arts Centre at 8pm Sean Crossan of NUIG will give a talk on the record of film on old GAA games. This will include grainy film from the 1943 and ’46 finals. There will be more extensive coverage of the 1962 final.

Cricket (as I know there are a few converts to it reading this !)The semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup are set up for Tuesday and Wednesday of this week with surprise packets New Zealand v Sri Lanka who beat England. The other semi-final is a mouth watering affair between hosts India and Pakistan on Wednesday. This may be the last series for the Indian master Sachin Tendulkar who is a hero in India. I read, some time ago a lovely tribute to him, the heart of it being: “Batsmen walk out into the middle alone. Not Tendulkar. Every time Tendulkar walks out to the crease, a whole nation, tatters and all, marches with him to the battle arena. A pauper people pleading for relief, remission from the life-long anxiety of being Indian, by joining in spirit with their visored saviour.” It could all, if India get to the final, be getting set up for a historic sporting climax with Tendulkar as a cornerstone. Keep an eye on it.

Padraig Pearses conceded the points to Boyle minors in the Division 1 League scheduled for last weekend. The minors will now play Michael Glaveys in Ballinlough on Sunday next 3rd April.

The McGovern Directional Drilling team suffered a four point loss to Western Gaels in an entertaining O'Rourke Cup game in Frenchpark on Saturday evening last. Boyle were behind at half time on the score; Boyle 1.2 Western Gaels 1.5. Boyle made something of a comeback to the middle of the second half and narrowed things to a point but Gaels pulled away again towards the end with the final score being Western Gaels 1.12 Boyle 1.8. Gaels were much more economical in terms of return of scores per shots taken as Boyle were well off the mark with a high total of wides. This was in contrast to the game against Strokestown when the forward division was very good in the return from shots area. While there is the occasional ‘great’ score from awkward angles the reality is that this is an irregular occurrence as opposed to getting the ball into the scoring zone. The starting team on Saturday was: T. Lowe, B. Supple, K. Supple, C. Boylan, Ml. O’Donnell, M.O’Connor, A. Tiernan, C. Cox, S.Tonry, K.McLoughlin, C. Smith, J.Suffin, P.Simon, D. Callaghan, M.O’Donohoe with J. Lyons, M. McGovern.

The Cooney Motors/Cooney Centra team will host Strokestown on Sunday next at 12 noon in the Abbey Park in the Tansey Cup. The U16s’ will entertain St Croan’s on this Friday evening next at 6.45pm in the Division 1 league, while the U14s’ will play St Dominic’s in Boyle on Thursday evening, also at 6.45pm. This is in the first round of the Feile competition.

The Club expresses its appreciation of the team managers who have assigned responsibility for cleaning the dressing rooms after matches and training sessions. Those few remaining managers who have not yet done so are asked to give immediate attention to this matter. It is unfair that the next users of the facilities should have to find them in an untidy condition.

The Club extends its best wishes to the Roscommon U21 and the Roscommon CBS teams and their respective managements who face major finals next weekend. Well done to the County seniors on their great achievement in Aughrim on Sunday last. It is great to be going in the right direction. There is a bit of confidence in Roscommon GAA circles with teams being pretty competitive in all grades. Well done to Darren O’Connor on securing a prestigious work posting. Scholar, footballer, boxer is there any limits to talent!

Sympathy is extended to Paddy Mulvey and family, Mullaghmore, Carrick on Shannon on the passing of Mrs Josephine Mulvey and to the Casey family, Callow, on the death of Tommy.

A fundraising table quiz will take place in The Moorings, Knockvicar on Saturday April 2nd at 9.30pm. The quiz is in aid of Dominick Nicholson’s participation with the Niall Mellon Trust.
