SHANE CONNAUGHTON’S “THE PITCH” COMES TO ST. JOSEPH’S HALL, BOYLE
“The Pitch” ……Coming to St. Joseph's Hall, Sunday Jan. 15th at 8.30 Adm €10. A Boyle GAA Project.
Philly lived and played for his team…. the jersey… the parish…. his friends - the very pitch he gave to the community is under threat, his enemies want to take it from him and turn it into a housing estate…..
A brand new production of Shane Connaughton’s play “The Pitch” is coming to St Joseph’s Hall in Boyle on Sunday next January the 15th in association with Boyle GAA.
“The Pitch” is on a nationwide tour of GAA and Social Clubs in association with The GAA Social Initiative and Calor Gas. The tour follows a successful summer production which featured the writer, Shane Connaughton, in the leading role. Now, former County Leitrim footballer and well known actor, Seamus O’Rourke stars in this fine original production.
“I am delighted that Seamus has taken the part. He is a huge character and an extraordinary talent who is not only perfect for the role but has made a massive contribution to the direction of the play. It was a major coup to get him on board! We are all looking forward to being in Boyle” says the play’s producer Will Govan of Moth magazine.
The production will be touring Ireland extensively during January.
“Best night out in town in years, outside of the county final win, obviously! A great fundraiser for the Scor and the Juvenile Club.” Says Liam Reilly, PRO at ‘The Kingscourt Stars’.
“We are delighted that Boyle GAA Club has been given the opportunity to stage this excellent play. This is its only staging in the North West Roscommon/South Sligo/South Leitrim region. It is a must-see not only for those with an interest in the GAA psyche, but for all drama enthusiasts. It should make for a great night's entertainment”-says Aidan Lavin, Chairperson, Boyle GAA Club.
A night not to be missed!
County League Division One Final
Boyle 1.5. Clann na Gael 1.3.
On a wet and windy afternoon of Friday the 30th December, in Lisnamult Roscommon, Boyle captured the Minor Division One County League Title defeating Clann na Gael. Boyle opened the scoring with a well taken free from wing back Colin Goldrick on six minutes. Clann na Gael responded two minutes later with a point of the game from their half forward. The conditions were proving a difficult obstacle for both teams but it was Clann who coped better playing with the aid of a stiff wind. Clann added a second after twenty one minutes. Still this was meagre return for their efforts which were stifled by the Boyle keeper McDermott and the woodwork. As the half time whistle was about to sound Clann added a third point from their prominent midfielder McManus. This left the half time score at Clann na Gael, 0-3 Boyle 0-1.
Boyle came out in determined fashion at the beginning of the second half and points from half forward Eoin Lavin and corner forward Dylan East put Boyle right back in contention, on level terms. Clann were reeling as Lavin put over his second point of the match after nine minutes. Clann launched attack after attack but couldn’t find a way past the influential Jason McDermott in the Boyle goal. Even though Clann hit the bar twice and struck the post, McDermott stopped numerous shots that came his way. Those missed opportunities by Clann and their slender haft time lead were to ensure that the title went to the north county team. The match winning score came as Boyle engineered a swift counter- attack with Lavin somehow wriggling his way past the Clann corner back to hit the ball low and hard to the corner of the net. This gave Boyle a five point advantage going into the last 15 minutes. Boyle were now defending for their lives as Clann pushed forward for a prolonged late surge. The task became more difficult for Boyle after their full forward was dismissed. Almost at the death Clann were thrown a lifeline when midfielder Ultan Harney goaled but it proved only a consolation score as the final whistle blew and Boyle were crowned County Minor Division One League. Clann were unlucky in their efforts but Boyle deserved the win for their gritty determined performance. This win gives Boyle the status of a top minor team in the County in 2011 as they have now done the Championship and League double. This league final victory showed the strength in depth of the panel as it had to be achieved in the absence, through injury, of some prominent members of the panel.
This minor double is perhaps the most notable achievement, for a Boyle team, in the history of the club.
Congratulations the Boyle team and their managers, Vinny Flanagan, Jonathan Conroy, Liam Conroy and Tom Kearney.
