Monday 6.45 P.M.....The McGovern Directional Drilling team made a promising start to the Division 2 League (O'Gara Cup) with a comprehensive win over St Michael’s on an excellent Cootehall pitch on Sunday. The game featured  two goals from Donie Smith (one from a penalty) and a goal from Mark O'Connor. Sunday saw the introduction of former Eastern Harps star Ray Hannon now domiciled in Boyle and awaiting his Boyle ‘Green Card’. Boyle started well and might have put up a match-winning lead in the first ten minutes, however the lead was 1.2 to nil. St. Michael’s came back with 4 points in the following 10 minutes as Boyle had a barren spell of 15 minutes. In this phase the Boyle keeper Ciaran Beirne made a great save to keep Boyle in front. Then followed points from Darren O'Connor and Ray Hannon's first for the club. Cian and Donal Smith finished the half with two frees to leave the half time score Boyle 1.6 St Michael’s 0.4. Boyle were in control in the second half and Enda Smith’s point was followed by a Donie penalty on 14 minutes. Ml. Paul Gilmartin added a further  minor but while Michael’s added 3 points Mark O’Connor (‘Bagsey’) with a well taken goal, brought a comfortable win to an end. The final score was, Boyle 3.10 St. Michael’s 0.7. The score line might suggest it was an impressive performance but the fact is that St. Michael’s (for a team who played in an Intermediate county final) were surprisingly poor on the day. There was considerable rustiness on the Boyle side also which, I imagine, was understandable. There were a number of bad misplaced passes, fumbles in possession, being pulled totally to one side of the field, not playing wide enough etc. The back line needs to ensure that they do not leave an attacker totally on his own, inside. That requires talking and informing. Oddly I felt that there were elements of a ‘challenge’ game to this. On the other side there were a good few positives, Ciaran Beirne was fine in goals, maybe he needs to keep his last line informed. The full back line did well with Kieran Supple showing his strength. The half back line also did well, generally. Cillian Cox had another good game and surged up field to effect on one occasion as did Ml. Paul Gilmartin. Ml. Hanmore has a good intro to this level. Ciaran Cox and Enda Smith form a good midfield and Enda (in a ‘Man of the Match’ performance) showed his power and speed with an incisive run in the first half plus a number of great pieces of fielding. Ray Hannon had a very satisfactory debut in the Boyle colours and his passing especially the height and angle will be a big help to Donie and co. of the inside forwards. Tadgh Lowe’s long range efforts were marginally off but on another day these kind of scores could be a big option. Mark O’Donohoe and Jim Suffin also got around the park when introduced while Mark O’Connor’s goal was top drawer  It was a positive all round performance with strong contributions from all players and subs used. They will meet Michael Glaveys in their next outing in this competition on Saturday week 9th March. So it is going to be an interesting campaign and one to look forward with optimism to.

 The Boyle team was as follows: C.Beirne, K.Supple, D.Callaghan, A. Sharkey, M.Goldrick, C.Cox, Ml. Hanmore, C. Cox, E, Smith Ml. Paul Gilmartin, Ray Hannon, T. Lowe,  Cian Smith, D. O’Connor, D. Smith with M. O’Donohoe, K. Feighan, J. Suffin, D. Kelly, M. O’Connor. (t.c.)
