Intermediate Championship Draw and Analysis:
The draw for the County Intermediate C’Ship took place at the recent Co. Board meeting. In Boyle’s Group are: Boyle, Fuerty, Eire Og and St. Barry’s. So this is a pretty competitive group. St. Barry’s felt they had been the victims of poor referring last year. I forget who they lost to. They will be out to show their potential this time. Eire Og are unpredictable and Boyle did not get it all their own way with them was it last year up there? Fuerty were beaten by the eventual county winners Pearses after a tough struggle last year. They have a number of very good young players who have come through the county minor ranks so they will feel that they will have a good chance against Boyle. So it all to play for and if Boyle are to be serious contenders these are the challenges that present themselves and have to be overcome. A good run in the O’Gara Cup is very important in the preparation. All teams prepare pretty well now so there are no real walkovers though emigration is telling in many clubs.
The other groups are: St. Dominick’s, Clann na Gael 2nds, St. Brigid’s 2nds and St. Michael’s. Dominick’s will be favourites there and I believe they have some good young players coming through also.
Then there are: St. Ronan’s, St. Aidan’s, Tulsk and Kilglass. St. Aidan’s are the tip for title winners and with Francie Grehan managing there should be an impetus with them to get back to senior level where they have been very competitive in recent years and were real contenders a short few year ago. Tulsk are always possibilities it just depends on the year and how things are going for them. Kilglass are an inconsistent unit and I am told St. Ronan’s are depleted of resources coming through though if they get going they are always competitive.
I presume it is two from each group so I go for; Boyle and Fuerty with St. Barry’s the real threat.
In group 2 it is St. Dominick’s and it should be Michaels but both Brigid’s and Clann have put out good second teams in recent years and they are serious about this team.
In group 3 St. Aidan’s are a definite with again little between the other three. If St.Ronan’s don’t get going it is Tulsk.
In the final shakeup it is; St. Aidan’s, St. Dominick’s, Boyle, St. Barry’s or Fuerty. With three from Boyle’s group it shows, by my assessment, that this is the tightest group.
