Above are the pictures and below is an email I got over the week-end of February the 6th from a former Boyle player, Ciaran Conlon, who now lives Brisbane, Australia. The post speaks for itself. I feel that despite our own club financial stresses and strains we should make an effort to support the Brisbane appeal. If every club in the county gave say €100 or so plus a bit of fundraising I might be able to do myself we could show our solidarity and support by not ignoring the appeal. To ignore the appeal would be very remiss of the GAA here. Anyway I just got the post with attached pics. which show the scale of the disaster for the GAA centre in Brisbane. I can email anyone pics. of the scale of the damage if they are interested. If your club is willing to help/contribute or whatever pans out please let me know.
I endorse Ciaran’s sentiment on the importance of the GAA in Australia at this time. I imagine many clubs will have young fellows passing through Brisbane and benefit from the GAA connections et al there. Ciaran says that there are at least 15 Roscommon GAA players involved and has sent me some of the names and their clubs of origin so let’s see what we can do.
With thanks

From Ciaran/Brisbane. Hi Tony,
I am now firmly back in the fold having taken on a coaching position with John Mitchells and more recently have been elected to the QGFA committee. Getting to the point of my correspondence I have a favour to ask of you as a staunch GAA man. The floods in Queensland caused substantial damage to the grounds and buildings belonging to the Queensland Gaelic Football Association (QGFA). The kitchen, bar, hall and dressing rooms all sustained a lot of damage not to mention the equipment required for pitch maintenance and basically we have been left with nothing other than the shell of the building. while volunteers have done a great job cleaning up and work has already started to get the venue back on its feet there is a huge task ahead. We have players from every corner of Ireland playing out here - at least 15 from Roscommon - . I would ask you to use your influence to raise the profile of the issue back home. A letter has been sent to all county boards and little or no response has been forthcoming to date. This may be due to it not being a busy time for them or some other sound reason but now is when we need their support and by that I mean financial support. I know that its all gone to hell back home and that money is tight but take into consideration that a large amount of young people leaving for foreign soil at the moment are heading to Australia. It is essential we get the facility back on its feet for more reasons than a game of football. It is a place to meet up with people from home, a place to find work and support if you’re finding it tough, a place to help you adjust to the enormity of how far away from home you are and a place where normality prevails if just for a few hours on a Sunday afternoon out at Willawong Park. At the moment the priorities are to get basic services up and running before St Patrick’s Day and then look at what else we can do at a later date. If you could advertise the tight spot that we are in I would be very appreciative. I am home for a few weeks in April so hope to meet up for a chat then.
Regards
CiarĂ¡in O Chonallain (Ciaran Conlon, Lisserlough now resident in Brisbane.)
