Thursday Night.
U 14s’ Cruise to Garda Cup Win.
Boyle had a pretty easy win over Elphin at the Abbey Park on Thursday evening. Cian McKeon put his stamp on the game in the opening minutes and barring a major change of direction Boyle were always in the driving seat from there to the end. I was surprised that Elphin were not near the Elphin young teams I became accustomed to some years ago. Anyway Boyle can only do their best and it was a very comfortable win here and the score was pretty high by the end though Elphin played to the end. So congratulations and well done to the team and management, Kieran McKeon and Johnny Lyons. I was pleased for two players whose fortunes I tend to follow here, Jack Moran and Sean Mullens. Sean got a cracking goal with a firm fist midway in the first half.
The team lined out thus: S. Brown, L.Casey, J. McKeough, A. Bonnici, C. Beirne, M.Austin, J.Cox, D. Gardiner, B. Conway (Capt.), C. Flanagan, C. McKeon, G. Gilmartin, Ml. Lavin, C. Deery, S. Mullens. The subs listed, most of whom played were; D.O’Driscoll (inj.), M. Doherty, K.O’ Connor, J. McDonnell, E. O’Driscoll, J. Rhodes, O.Regan, J. Moran.
The medals were presented by Supt. Mullarkey of the Garda Siochana with Garda Fergal O’Donnell also in attendance. Seamus Nugent of the Northern Board presented the Cup to the winning Capt. Brian Conway who thanked all appropriately. Miss Kelly, daughter of the late Sgt. John Kelly, presented the ‘Man of the Match’ award to Cian McKeon whose scoring average prospered on the evening! There are a number of excellent players on this side also and there are some very big men to boot. I am led to believe there is a significant rugby influence involved. If they can give Gaelic the commitment then there is no reason why they should not be challenging for top honours in the years ahead.
There was a large gathering present and again as Seamus Nugent remarked the final was well presented by Boyle Club. A minutes silence was observed as a mark of respect in memory of recent bereavements. The referee was Pat Casey, a Ballinameen stalwart.
Now it is on to Super Saturday and the Co. U 16 Final v Clann na Gael and the Co. Intermediate Semi-Final v St. Dominick’s at Strokestown’s new pitch.
